[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Pt. Mouilee From: "j fisher" <biggrinnell(AT)gmail.com> Date: 14 Mar 2008 1:48am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I had a wonderful, sun filled day outside. Hiked over 7 miles, saw 73 species! A couple local birds made it on the list, too. Jerry, I wish I had stayed later to see the Short Eared Owls. My favorites were a solo male Northern Shoveler and the lone Trumpeter Swan. Actually, the male Northern Harrier was the most gorgeous, and close looks, too. I thought i had a lifer, but instead of a Black Legged Kittiwake, I think I saw a peculiar Bonaparte's gull around the northern most cell of the Banana Dike. I have been seeing several this year, already but this bird seemed bigger.... The leading wing edges were black, but the trailing edge was not. But it couldnt have been a Black Legged Kittiwake (first year) having reddish- orange feet...?!?! Who knows. Anyway, go see for yourself. It's amazing there right now, and is only getting better. From: "Cendra" <cendra(AT)digitalrealm.net> Date: 14 Mar 2008 1:57am This I was informed of by another birder and I dutifully went to listen on line to woodcock calls. Unless all the woodcock audio sites have really bad recordings, it was not a woodcock. The pitch was higher and had the overtones of a nighthawk. I've also been a nighthawk watcher/hearer for 40 years which was why I jumped out of my skin when I heard it. I said, "Naw, it's a killdeer." But of course at 10 pm it certainly was not and I don't know when they come but I don't think it is now. I will stake my ears on the one seriously confused bird suggestion, if woodcock is my only other choice. Lot's of evening roost activity as gulls, ducks and blackbirds fly over looking for a safe place to spend the night. On the topic of confusing calls, i watched a single starling yesterday as he alternated between spot-on Red-tailed Hawk and Eastern Meadowlark song. They are interesting birds. I wouldn't be shocked if they could do a nighthawk sound! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Probable Cackling Goose, Barton Pond From: LaRue Wells <texwells(AT)comcast.net> Date: 14 Mar 2008 2:51pm At 2:25pm today (March 14) I saw what I judged to be a Cackling Goose at Barton Pond, Washtenaw County. It flew in with a flock of about 125 Canada Geese and landed on the ice a couple of hundred yards east of the pullout (off Huron River Drive) for Foster woods, or a couple of hundred yards west of the easternmost pullout. The geese were still on the ice when I left at 2:45. They were pretty close to the open water along the near shore, so were not at too great a distance. Park, go down the bank and across the railroad tracks, and walk to the river side of the woods.) Will was timing its dives. It goes down for 50 seconds and then stays up for 8-15 seconds.
