Aside from a flock of wild Turkeys at the river, and a plethora of Downy & Red-bellied Woodpeckers in the woods, all was quiet.? I was surprised to see about a dozen small (<1/2") tan moths fluttering in the warming sunshine near the dedication boulder.? Not exactly butterflies, but hints of things to come. Earlier in the day, I heard a Brown Creeper in the Norway Spruce grove at Washtenaw NAPP's Brauer Preserve off of Parker Road just south of Waters Road.? I'm guessing, while small, this evergreen grove provides an interesting micro-habitat for migrants, and maybe even the odd owl.? The creeper certainly seemed appropriate calling from out of its gloom. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Birding Buddies? From: "Carilee Moran" <colemich(AT)sbcglobal.net> Date: 15 Mar 2008 11:21am I am but a humble birder, with no pretensions to enormous life lists or Olympic-style bird chasing. I am pretty good with bird songs, to which I have devoted a lot of effort, and not as good at some other things. I wonder if there is anyone out there who is as tired of birding alone as I am, and who would be interested in occasionally combining forces for either a local expedition or day trips a bit farther afield. I find organized field trips to usually be a little too much company. Weekends or evenings are the times that I can get out, since I still work. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] RE: hamburg twp From: John Lowry <john(AT)kingbird.org> Date: 15 Mar 2008 1:14pm Cendra, Good question! I'm not sure, but It wouldn't shock me in a lighted city area. I forgot it was that late though. If I had to bet, I'd say you heard a woodcock. Timing is perfect for them, and if you didn't find an exact match for your memory of the sound, that doesn't mean it wasn't a slightly aberrant individual. Most birds songs and calls do vary by region and even individually (as you probably know) and depending on listening conditions, etc., it would actually be a little more surprising to hear a call that is an exact match for a recording. Great book on this topic (bird song) is the one by Kroodsma. It will really open your eyes (and ears) to variety in bird song. So have you satisfied yourself yet? I have to admit there are many bird sightings (and tons of heard-only birds) that will remain puzzles for me for the rest of my life. And i have had my share of embarrassing mis-IDs. My favorite is the green heron that turned into a western meadowlark once i got a little closer. It would have been less memorable except that I made our guide stop the car (in the Arizona grasslands!) and was going to show my nephew Clark what a great bird I had found. It is now known as the "Meadow-heron" incident. And just don't even start on Empids... [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Dead waterfowl littering the ice on Lake St. Clair From: "Kari Zoellner" <Karizoellner(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 15 Mar 2008 3:29pm I was out on Harsens Island today collecting specimines of dead waterfowl. I am very saddened by the sight of these birds. We literally found 100's of dead birds today mainly consisting of Canvasbacks, we have however found a handfull of Redheads one Ringneck and one Swan. I have gone to the local DNR here on the island only to be told that the birds are dying of starvation. I find this hard to believe considering that there is plenty of open water now, but yet today we were out in our boat on the South Channel of Lake St. Clair and amongst the 100's of dead birds there are Canvasbacks which can barely stand or walk just flailing on the ice dying. I am at a loss for what to do about this and was wondering if anyone would be interested in possibly doing a study of these birds. I have collected quite a few specimines of these dead birds. Maybe they are just starving to death but what if it is something else. If these birds were starving, why would they predominantly be Drake Canvasbacks and not Bufflehead or any of the other divers. It reminds me of the Shad die off of two years ago. The DNR said that it was because of a quick change in the water temp, but was later found by some testing facilities to have been caused by the VHS virus that has been plaguing our Muskie. Any help would be great. --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. I took a trip last fall to the shores of Lake Michigan above Sleeping Bear dunes and witnessed first hand all the dead loons, ring neck ducks and Grebes that died of botulism poisoning. I truly pray that what you report is ONLY starvation and is not botulism spreading to everything. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] FW: RE: hamburg twp From: "Cendra" <cendra(AT)digitalrealm.net> Date: 15 Mar 2008 5:22pm Thanks, John, Since I have the flu, I was only at Meijers on an emergency food trip. Next week, when I am well, I will wander back out, get a frosty at Wendy's, and hang out for awhile and see what I hear. I do know that birds have individual calls. I track "my" robins who return every year. When (if) he arrives, this will be the second spring for the son of my previous robin, who was born here some springs before that, and that robin was hatched here.... I've lived here for 37 years and so have been able to track who is who. Unfortunately that tracking has brought on a life-long prohibition of crows in my yard, as one year I watched one come and destroy all the newly-laid eggs in my robins' nest. There are now anti-crow spells cast around my house up to above tree-height! If I hear again what I heard before, I'll report back. However given the track record of the various "powers that be" over the years regards these things, especially nowadays, I often am skeptical. (remember the PBB scandal of the 70s? it was kept under wraps not only from the public but even from Governor Milliken! Thanks to a couple of very conscientious and honest Vets, a couple of UP lawyers, and a few concerned scientists over in the Netherlands it all came out!) Well unless one can afford private independent lab testings, one must give the benefit of the doubt to those in authority!
