Subject: [birders] OT: Squirrel Tails and Bird Feeder Hangers...
From: Scott Manly <manlyrs(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 16 Mar 2008 9:40am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Just looked out my sliding glass door this morning to see a large tuft of f=
ur in the crook of my double-shepherds-hook feeder hanger. Went out to inv=
estigate and found that some hapless squirrel must have slipped off and got=
his tail caught, ripping off the last inch or so. Rather discusting. The=
n I saw the blood spots on the porch. That had to smart!!
=20
I should be able to identify the squirrel pretty easily when he returns.
=20
Somehow, I doubt that will keep him off the feeders though.
=20
Good birding,
Scott Manly,
Ionia, MI

If a loon is spotted, would you kindly put "loon" on the subjject line so i can
pick up the sighting and location quickly? I have a friend who really wants to
see a loon if possible when they migrate through.
Thanks.
Enjoy the spring birding!

Subject: [birders] Long-tailed Duck still at Barton Pond
From: "Bruce M. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 16 Mar 2008 1:58pm
The Long-tailed Duck was still at Barton Pond when I left there 10
minutes ago. I watched it from 1:30 to 1:45. It is at the largest
pulloff, the first one west of the dam. It's not nearly as far out as it
has been at its Foster Savanna location, and it is not spending as much
time diving.

Cendra,
Killdeer can be active well after dark, amazingly. I've seen and
heard them when looking for woodcock.

Subject: [birders] Mucho Laps on Gotfredson Road C. Washtenaw
From: Roger Kuhlman <rkuhlman(AT)hotmail.com>
Date: 16 Mar 2008 3:55pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
More than 100 Lapland Longspurs were in the fields near Gotfredson and Vree=
land Roads (central Washtenaw County about five miles east of Ann Arbor) ea=
rly Sunday afternoon. Except when flocks of them were swirling through the =
skies they were nearly impossible to see. Their preference was to land in w=
eedy fields and completely disappear. Fortunately a Northern Harrier was in=
the area and stirred them up into flight several times.
=20
Westward along Vreeland Road I found a few Rusty Blackbirds at a couple of =
wooded patches near wetlands.
=20
This morning I found my first Eastern Phoebe of the year in Gallup Park alo=
ng the Huron River. I detected this bird by hearing its distinctive call no=
tes while it was across the river in Furstenberg Park. When a walker in Fur=
stenberg went by the area where I heard these sounds, the Phoebe flew over =
to my side of the river where I got to see it perched in a tree doing its t=
ail dropping behavior.
=20
The Arb this morning was not too productive except for a scattering of Pine=
Siskins. Massive areas of brush have been cut all over the place in the Ar=
b that were previously good sheltering and feeding habitat for over-winteri=
ng birds. These changes, I do not think, are a good thing for birds but the=
new open vistas make the place more "park-like."

Subject: [birders] Long-tailed Duck update
From: Parula100(AT)aol.com
Date: 16 Mar 2008 5:26pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
I re-found the Long-tailed Duck near the Foster Road bridge shortly after
4:00 P.M. today. I saw the bird from the bridge. It was east of the bridge,
nearly at the bend in the river, and near the far bank. It was diving regularly
in an area in front of a patio with a set of chairs on it that is on the edge
of the far shore. A scope would be very helpful in picking out this bird at
that distance.
The bird was still there when I left at 4:45.

Subject: [birders] Erie Marsh & Pt. Mouillee - Sunday morning
From: "Jerry Jourdan" <jourdaj(AT)mail2world.com>
Date: 16 Mar 2008 3:10pm
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
I took a brief walk at Erie Marsh this morning and realized that I'm
still a few days to a week early for waterfowl. Several pairs of
NORTHERN SHOVELERS were seen in the canals near the preserve entrance
along w/ numerous HOODED MERGANSERS. The inland ponds were still
frozen, as were the corn fields, and no ducks were to be found, so I
opted to shorten my walk after about a 1/4 mile on the muddy dike.
Hundreds of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were massing along the ditches along
I-75 south of Monroe, and several KILLDEER were observed flying over as
headed north to Pt. Mouillee.
Parking at Roberts Rd. I saw a light-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flying west
toward the landfill and an adult BALD EAGLE along the shoreline. Dozens
of BUFFLEHEAD were swimming along the edge of the bit of ice still
clinging to the shoreline. Several pairs of LESSER SCAUP were also
present. The Lead Unit was still frozen except for a patch of open
water near the cattail marsh at the west end. This water held 100's of
AMERICAN COOT, REDHEAD, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, AMERICAN WIGEON
(several pair) and COMMON MERGANSER. I walked as far as Cell 2 and
scoped the Lead Unit near the Middle Causeway. Hundreds more of the
above-mentioned ducks were swimming in more open patches of ice, along
with a pair of BALD EAGLES.
I suspect that the ice will be gone by mid-week and the ducks will be
back in full force.
Leaving the parking lot I spotted an adult COOPER'S HAWK in the trees at
the south end of the road, and while attempting to photograph it an
immature BALD EAGLE flew by, so I took a few pics of it. At the
landfill the ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was joined by (3) RED-TAILS and a
NORTHERN HARRIER forming a small kettle just off the edge of the road.

Subject: [birders] Iceland Gull at Edison Lake (Wayne County)
From: "Bruce M. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 16 Mar 2008 6:11pm
From 3:30 to 4:15 this afternoon Tex Wells, Bob Kelsch, and I watched a
first-winter Iceland Gull at Edison Lake (Wayne County). The bird mostly
sat with its head tucked, but once in a while it showed its head and even
stood up for a bit. I got some photos. I'll post them to the photo
sharing site in a bit.

Those double shepherd hooks can be dangerous even for birds.
I once had a House Finch stuck in the space by it's toe and was flapping
wildly for some time.
I went out to try and help and my presence was enough for it to shift &
release itself but it was too exhausted to fly and dropped into the shrubs where
it stayed for some time recovering.
I often would watch birds slide down the curve that way trying to access the
tube feeders.
I solved the problem by filling the space with twine.

Subject: [birders] One Road Challenge, Sunday 3/30/08
From: Catherine Carroll <songsparrow(AT)wowway.com>
Date: 16 Mar 2008 7:15pm
Birders,
Time for a little competitive birding? The Washtenaw Audubon Society
invites you to consider participating in the "One Road Challenge."
That is, find one road in Washtenaw County that you think will yield
the highest number of species. Two weeks from today, Sunday, March
30th bird from 12 midnight until 11:00 am bird your road for the
highest number of species you and your team can see or hear. All
birding is done from the road. One of the secrets to being
competitive in the challenge is to select a road where some species
of waterfowl can be counted into your total.
Meet at the Flim Flam Restaurant on Plymouth and Nixon roads at 11:30
am for breakfast and the tally.
All the details for both the challenge and the tally are found on the
website, www.washtenawaudubon.org. Pay attention to the roads that
are off limits for this year's challenge.

Subject: [birders] Dark Morph Redtail Hawk Monroe County
From: "Charles Owens" <vinblue(AT)cass.net>
Date: 16 Mar 2008 10:11pm
A dark morph Redtail has been spending the winter just west of the
truckstops at the intersection of US223 and I-23. I have passed this bird
a number of times on my way home from work but never when I had my camera
with me. I was able to finally get a picture of this beautiful Bird this
morning however. A picture of the bird is now posted to my Grovestreet
site. It is kind of a distant shot since I did not want to disturb him in
his hunting. There are also some interesting pictures from my outing
today including a wonderful encounter with a trumpeter swan and a Northern
Shrike.
