BTW, when I went to Edison Lake yesterday I also checked Grace Lake
(Visteon on Tyler Rd.). It was complete frozen over. There were a 100
or so Herring and Ring-billed Gulls there.
Edison Lake is about half open, and it has a lot of ducks and gulls.

Subject: [birders] Hamburg Township Yard Birds
From: Melissa Pappas <ftknoxfox53(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 17 Mar 2008 10:18am
Very interesting times. Oodles of red-winged
blackbirds, a few robins, house finches, several
bluebirds (both sexes), and a white-throated sparrow -
all spring-type birds - along with calling
red-breasted nuthatches, purple finches, and juncos.
Seems that the season is in that change phase. The
ubiquitous goldfinches are beginning to earn their
name and the cardinals are singing like crazy.
We have some very talented blue jays who have mastered
the calls of other birds, as well. There is one (I
assume just one) that sounds exactly like a coopers
hawk. It sure fooled me. The kicker, though, is that
it never seems to fool the other birds. I can always
tell it's the ventriloquist jay if I can still see
birds on the feeders.

I went to Edison Lake today on my lunch hour and did NOT relocate the Iceland
Gull. I scoped from the park on the far east side and the marina around the
corner. However, there was a large group of gulls a couple hundred yards to the
west. I could not find a good access point to scope these birds. I did find
one first-cycle Lesser BBG in the group of several Herring and Ring-billed Gulls
near the park.
Take care,

Sure didn't seem like Spring was near today. With endless grey skies and

But Mr. Greater Yellowlegs didnt mind. He arrived at Pt. Mouillee this

Killdeer, my first shorebird of 2008. There is a silver lining to these

I just returned from the Chelsea State Game Area parking lot across from where
N. Fletcher Road terminates at Dexter/Chelsea Road.? Two American Woodcocks were
peenting from the Mill Creek floodplain, heard from the top of the field
surrounding the parking lot.? I waited for the first sky-dance which happened
just prior to 8:00PM, then I scooted -- its raw out there tonight!

Hi all -
Enjoyed three Pileated Woodpeckers along the Huron River tonight
about 6:30. All three were on the same tree at one point, then two
playing chase while the other stayed low on a fallen log. I didn't
have binos, so not sure of gender. There was one definite aggressor,
not giving the other any peace until chased across the river. Sounds
of Sandhills calling in the distance. Male bluebird, chickadees,
hairy woodpecker and juncos occupying same spot between paved trail
and river. Nice night.

Today, while doing research on Maple Rd. near Saline, I came across quite a few
good birds and habitat and thought that someone might want to consider this road
for the challenge. The farm fields on this road are flooded and look as though
they will stay that way for some time, providing good habitat for shorebirds.
Also, there is a river running along the road for a few hundred yards that could
produce some waterfowl and also owls at night. The birds seen or heard today
were as follows:
Canada Goose
Mallard
Wild Turkey
Killdeer
Red-tail Hawk
Brown Creeper
Blue Jay
Black-capped Chickadee
Tufted Titmouse
American Robin
Dark-eyed Junco
American Tree Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Field Sparrow
Red-winged Blackbird
Brown Cowbird
Eastern Phoebe
American Crow
Sandhill Crane
Northern Flicker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
I may be missing a few others, but in the past around this time and April Ive
had mergansers, thrushes, and early warblers.

I assume you are refering especially to that part of Maple Road that =
runs south From Saline to the Monroe County line. It is, indeed, great =
habitat and I know much of it well, since it forms the western boundary =
of York Township in which I live. If I had the time, I WOULD consider =

Good luck to whoever (if anyone) who takes it!
