Subject: [birders] downy woodpecker returns

I have a downy woodpecker who has lived here for years - well, I suppose he
and his ancestors. He was back today working the old places on the silver
maple. I don't know where he goes in the winter, but it's not here. My
neighbor's feeder had what we call a house finch, though since being on this
list, I have learned of other birds that are similar. Ours look like
sparrows with red heads and chests, and they sound almost exactly like male
canaries. The house finch warbles I could find on-line don't sound as
beautiful as these particular birds, but I can't figure out how to find out
what similar birds might be. I only found "learn to distinguish this bird
from similar looking and similar sounding birds." Big help!

Subject: [birders] Hoary Redpoll - Saginaw Co; Long-tailed duck -
Oakland Co
From: "Santner, Steven" <santners(AT)karmanos.org>
Date: 24 Mar 2008 8:56am
This is a multi-part message in MIME format.
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Yesterday (Mar 23) Darlene Friedman and I did some county
listing in Saginaw and Gratiot Cos. During most of the day, we didn't
see a lot that was interesting but our starting and finishing birds were
pretty decent. At 8:00 AM we had a flock of about 200 redpolls at a
feeder on Marshall Rd just north of Birch Run Rd in southern Saginaw Co.
There was also a Hoary Redpoll in the group. We got a scope study of
this bird for about 10 min and noted the lack of streaking on the sides
and rump and the lack of red on the breast. The short bill could be
seen from time to time but most of the time we didn't have the right
angle of viewing to see this. It was overhead in a tree (about 30 ft
away) most of the time. It didn't spend much time actually at the
feeder although Darlene probably saw it there before we found it in the
tree. Unfortunately, it didn't cooperate for Darlene and she wasn't
able to get a good photo.=20
At the end of the day (about 7:30 PM) we were at Kensington
Metropark looking for the Long-tailed Duck previously reported form
there. The bird was not in the vicinity of the bridge but Darlene
located it out in the water about one half to three quarters of a mile
up the lake. It was with about 1000 or so other waterfowl so some
patience may be required to find it. The spot where we found it can be
reached as follows: From the Buno Rd bridge go back past the Farm
Center and the Administration Bldg. Go over another large bridge and
turn left into a picnic area. Drive to the end of the road (it isn't
really the end but it's blocked off). Park there and walk in for a
little ways until you see a small dirt road leading off to the left. Go
down this road until you can see a path down the hill to the lake. Be
careful, it's slippery until the snow melts. Scan the open water off to
the right. The bird was nearly all of the way to the ice. Another spot
where it should be possible to find the bird (and the lighting would be
better in the morning) would be the large beach area on the east side of
the lake. Walk down to the water and look back to the right towards the
open water and sort through the ducks. There was a good variety of
ducks on the lake yesterday including mallard, Black Duck, Gadwall,
Northern Shoveler, both scaup, Redhead, Canvasback, Ring-necked Duck,
Bufflehead, Com Goldeneye, Hooded and Com Merganser, Mute and Tundra
Swan, and of course Canada Goose.

This past weekend we've gotten our first pair of Wood Ducks in the pond
behind our house. It's odd to see them with snow on the ground, but it's
certainly not the first time.

Lee,
your wren can't crack seeds, so it is looking for a hull-less one.
It probably thinks your feeder is full of sunflower hearts and is
very disappointed. Why don't you mix in some sunflower hearts and
support this fine bird?

And although he got away, I too had a Grackle grab (with his beak) a
Red-Breasted Nuthatch which had landed on the opposite side of a cylindrical
split-peanut feeder back in October. At first I thought sure the Nuthatch
was a goner when the Grackle deftly thrust towards him. When it was clear
the Grackle was holding him by the part of the wing near the body, either
the Nuthatch managed to escape or the Grackle was only interested in
flinging him off of the feeder.
I was very surprised the Nuthatch flew away apparently unharmed.

I have personally witnessed Grackles at our feeders grab House Sparrow(s)
and viciously thrash them literally into pieces! Can't say they ate them or
never witnessed this with any other species but in any event a very violent
act!
