Subject: [birders] this year's hummer migration
From: Kristen Columbus <kebc77(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 30 Mar 2008 4:29am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Hello birders,
I'm keeping an eye on the migration map at hummingbirds.net, and this year it
seems like they are being seen headed up the coast at earlier dates relative to
the interior part of the country. I checked back a few years and there were a
couple years (2005 for ex.) that the trend appears although not as distinctly.
Some years they seem to come northward through the midwest at about the same
time as they did on the coast (2006 and 2007, for ex.).
Does anyone have some ideas as to what might be causing this?
Thanks,
Kristen Columbus (Tecumseh, MI)

Hi Mike,
You can use ORNIS to gain a bit more information about Bob Budge's
Red-tailed Hawk. The access link is http://olla.berkeley.edu/ornisnet/
Once you get to the site, you will need to click the search options
several times to actual do a search. Choose --> Search ORNIS data;
Search Data; Search Ornis Data; Build Query; Select UMMZ records; and
build the query: "Catalog Number = 201098".
You will find a female Red-tailed Hawk that was collected in 1978. I
am the Research Assistant for the UM Bird Division this semester, I'll
see if any more data exists on the actual specimen and let you know.
Cheers,
Jason

I am curious about longevity in a single bird, while population
turnover is probably a more important issue?
Without telling you the whole story....I took over the Biology teaching
postion for Bob Budge in Greenville, MI. He is still, after his death,
well known in Greenville. He was there for 37 years, and that to me is
amazing all by itself. He became my Mentor, and I will always hold him
at the top of my list. This guy taught 3 generations in Greenville and
became my best resource after a bad day.
Well to my point.....Bob had several Red-tailed Hawks that were injured
and non-releasable in a very nice pen in his back yard. Bob had one of
his Hawks die one day. He took it to U of M and was told that it was
the longest lived Red-tail according to their records. I believe it was
27 years old.
For people at U of M.....do you have records of this? I am sure Bob
Budge was giving me the straight story. Thanks.

Kristen,
The pace of bird migration in the spring is dependent on a number of =
factors, including day length, hormone levels, and weather conditions. =
Many of our spring migrants, including warblers, sparrows, thrushes, and =
others, migrate mainly at night so that "favorable" southerly winds at =
night can help them along while thunderstorms and other severe weather =
at night tends to put them down and halt the migration (and results in =
some mortality too). Ruby-throated Hummingbirds migrate during the day, =
but surprisingly not much is known about the factors affecting the pace =
of their migration. Bear in mind that the map you're looking at on =
hummingbirds.net is the leading edge of the migration...the first =
arrivals...not the main movement of birds. Good weather conditions may =
tend to favor those individuals that have started moving north early, =
and have not met any obstacles along the way to delay their movement. My =
guess is that perhaps weather conditions along the southern Atlantic =
coast has been, so far, favorable for them to move, unlike the =
mid-continent where we're wondering whether we've seen the last snow or =
not! But, last year when we had freezing conditions through the first =
half of April well south of us, there were worries that many =
hummingbirds would be killed. That may have happened, but despite this =
badly timed cold snap, Ruby-throats arrived in Michigan's Upper =
Peninsula in late April in unprecedented numbers! And, my summer banding =
results from last year would suggest that the Michigan population was =
relatively unaffected by this cold snap. Perhaps some of the earliest =
hummingbirds were already north of this system when it came through =
while the bulk of the migrants were held south of it?
Interesting topic worthy of much more study.

Subject: [birders] first West Lake Report
From: "John Langmore" <langmore(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 30 Mar 2008 3:48pm
First report from West Lake, near Chelsea. 160 acres of wetland dammed and
flooded in the 1930's. Roughly round about 1 km across, only about 9 ft of
water in the deepest areas, and having a number of very shallow areas that
are partially submerged or above water depending on the lake level that
varies by about 18 inches during the year. Fed by marsh to the west (next
to old Chelsea dump) and drains into marsh to the east. Farm land on south
side. Eight houses around north side.
March '08 summary:
Unusual month because lake was solid most of month and still is. Until
recently ice was very thick with firm snow cover to record tracks. Water at
highest level all of March. Frequent Canada geese and sandhill cranes
(family of 2 and family of 3). Between 1 and 3 mute swan pairs seen flying
over lake and in water whenever available. I had not noticed before that
their butts are black when they fly overhead. Fox or coyotes had pulled two
muskrat from their holes in the shore. Carcasses were covered by snow and
then dug out by scavengers. Mink was seen or tracked many times, once
dragging prey home. Mink hurries away whenever geese see him/her and become
aggressive. Lots of deer, muskrat, mink, fox or coyote, raccoon tracks on
lake. Occasional ducks in flight but do not land. Redwing blackbirds have
returned but not yet aggressive. Occasional phoebe heard. Lots of little
birds (gangs of jays, doves, etc.)
Contrast with '07--Cranes, geese, and swans were all nesting at beginning of
March last year. At the end of March '08, all three are still just looking
for nesting ground. Unusually quiet at night with only occasional arguments
between geese. Reasons for difference seem to be higher water and much more
ice this year.
Sighted this weekend: Three pairs of local Canada geese looking for nesting
areas, plus ~30 migrants sleeping on the ice. Action on the island in front
of house: First great blue heron hunting--very nice occipital plumes. Crane
family of two hunting in water when they are not up on shore pulling up
worms. A pair of mute swans foraging. Seen only in flight over lake: turkey
vulture, ducks. Turkeys crossing road. Male with a beautiful beard stood
to protect the family.
Questions for the experienced birders:
1. Where do our redwing blackbirds winter?
2. What are the causes and expected rates of infant mortality of the geese,
cranes, and swans in this area? I've been keeping rough track of the local
families that nest on or frequent our property over that last three years,
and have the impression that 0 - 30% survival is common. For example, in
'07 the crane family that walks past our garden in the morning went
progressively from 3 to 2 to 1 to 0 young last year. I know that the
blackbirds treat them very harshly (but seem much too small to kill them),
however I have no idea what does kill them (even after they are nearly the
size of the adults and fly well). I imagine that the turtles get the small
signets and goslings, but have never had direct evidence of this. We did
have a feral dog until last Fall, so this could have been a factor.
