[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Local Beaver Action From: "j fisher" <biggrinnell(AT)gmail.com> Date: 31 Mar 2008 12:12am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Island Lake Rec Area has hosted Beaver in recent years. Unfortunately, No further signs exist, as the area is frequented by trappers, hunters. But the range is expansive. Used to be several Poplar trees in the vicinity of Trout Lake bearing their sign. A lodge existed on the eastern most edge of the property, around the private gravel pit east of Trout Lake. I saw a large adult while birding two years ago in April. Remember, animals and birds dont follow the rules that science( not an exact science) has established. All you know is that you dont know. Enjoy it anyway. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Prehistoric bird attack From: "Cendra" <cendra(AT)digitalrealm.net> Date: 31 Mar 2008 1:40am This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I went to Huron River Drive yesterday to try to see all these amazing birds on Barton Pond. After clambering over the trash and brush that some demented person thought would prevent our crossing the RR tracks, I got to the shore, in a strong, very chilly breeze and observed numerous birds, all at the far other side of the pond. The only thing near me was the white exercise ball still on top of the ice. No birders; no birds that could have been examined without a telescope. So I waved at the train when it blasted through (no whistles at Foster Bridge anymore! Must have been at Zeeb when it announced itself) Then I began driving my daughter's little VW Beetle back towards Maple Rd. Suddenly a humongous black monster rose up from the side of the road and headed straight for me. Before I could react, I saw it was an enormous bird, wings spread wider than the car, beautiful black feather flocked with lighter colors. Before my life could flash before my eyes, the bird rose straight up on the bow-wind the car produced and went overhead. I was going so slowly that I could see it coast to the far side of the road, then, in my rear-view mirror, glide back to the side where it had started, to land and begin picking at the roadkill. Closest I've ever been to a turkey vulture. It was magnificent! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] One Road Challenge, 03/30/08 From: Catherine Carroll <songsparrow(AT)wowway.com> Date: 31 Mar 2008 6:16am Birders, Five teams and thirteen birders participated in the One Road Challenge yesterday. The combined effort produced a very respectable 71 species found on five different roads of varying length and habitat. No rarities were seen, but some very nice birds were found. Common Loon, Horned Grebe, fly-over Cackling Geese, Blue- winged and Green-winged Teal, Woodcock, Screech Owl, Tree Swallows, Eastern Phoebe, Winter Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Swamp, White- crowned and Field sparrow and Rusty Blackbird are examples of just some of the birds. The Grebeous Errors, Roger Wykes and Andy Johnson, birded Maple Road and ran away with the victory. Our breakfast at the Flim Flam Restaurant served us well again this year. We all warmed up with coffee, hot chocolate and a hearty breakfast for the tally. The One Road Challenge is a good-natured and fun excuse to team up for some birding when it's generally still very quiet. That is about to change, of course. Soon the heavens will open and we'll all be running around and finding our spring migrants everywhere. With this in mind, I invite everyone to participate in one or all of the eight week series of walks through Nichols Arboretum to monitor the progression of spring migration. The first of these begins on Thursday, April 10th with an 8:00 am start at the end of the Riverside Drive cul-de-sac. Details found on the Washtenaw Audubon Society website - www.washtenawaudubon.org - click on field trips. As a special event there is a small charge but I think it should be worthwhile. Unfortunately, Eddie Sanchez and I will both be out of town on business trips and will be unable to enjoy the show. I would encourage bright flashlights, rain gear, and good footwear. As Eddie said, watch where you step on the path to avoid hurting the sals! Rick Here is the notice from Jennifer Hollenbeck at Hudson Mills. Please thank her for the help in making this happen! Salamander Migration 8 pm Join us at Hudson Mills Metropark to witness the salamander migration. This fascinating event only happens for a short amount of time in the spring. Meet at Oak Meadows parking lot where we will then walk to the ponds. $2/child and $5/adult cash/check only. Call (734) 426-8211 for more information. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] No birds at my feeder From: Maria Todd <purplefinch05(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 31 Mar 2008 7:50am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hello All! I need some assistance with getting birds to come to my new feeder. I live in an apartment in Novi that backs up to Walled Lake. Last fall a tree right in front of our apartment, had to be cut down due to weather fatalities. I was getting birds at my feeder most of the winter. Then I had to stop feeding them for about three weeks because the feeder string broke and my feeder was no longer usable. Well about three weeks ago I got a new feeder and put some seed in it. I thought I was not getting birds because the seed may have been stale so I went out and purchased a bird seed mix including millett, corn, and sunflower seeds but they still do not seem to be coming. Do you think it is the new feeder I purchased? It is smaller then the other feeder in length but width wise it is about the same. Any suggestions? I do have a suet cage and I was thinking about hanging it from a tree across the main road leading into our apartment complex. Do you think this would help? I appreciate and will accept all suggestions. Thanks, Maria --------------------------------- No Cost - Get a month of Blockbuster Total Access now. If one is inclined, I would recommend standing along Groh Road looking onto the airport and you will notice quite a few horned larks, but you may get lucky with a lapland longspur as I did today. It was quite vocal flying around and some of the calls do sound a bit like a snow bunting, so keep your ears tuned.
