Subject: [birders] (OT) Beavers in Wayne County
From: Smileysmlc(AT)aol.com
Date: 1 Apr 2008 1:50am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
With all of the posts about beavers, I thought I'd add a couple more reports.
I was surprised to hear of the beaver in Superior Township last year, but I
was truly amazed to recently discover, along with some friends, a beaver in the
City of Westland in Wayne County. This has to be the first beaver in the
Rouge River watershed in over 100 years. (It would be interesting to know when
the last report of beaver in the Rouge River actually occurred.)
Although we haven't actually seen the beaver yet, there are numerous small
and large trees which give clear evidence of its presence. Many of the cuttings
are fresh, and some appear to be from last year. Unfortunately, there is not
much of a supply of suitable trees at the site to sustain a beaver, so it is
unclear how long the beaver will remain in the area.
Another beaver has been reported at Crosswinds Marsh...and one has even been
reported in the City of Windsor. They sure are getting around!

Mon. afternoon at Barton Pond, one loon doing flips and tumbles, then two
others sailing along farther away, then two more, then another, finally eight
gathered together, all seen at once. Having left about 4:00, I got a call from
Charlene Campbell about 5:00 telling of ten (!!) present at once, all seen
from the easily accessed pull-off toward (not at) the dam. Another birder
present may have gotten some pictures.

Please would you describe better where this turnoff is? Which road?
I tried looking at birds from the road north of Barton Pond on Sunday and
could find nowhere to pull off.

Subject: [birders] directions to more common birding locations in SE
Mi
From: ddarm(AT)umich.edu
Date: 1 Apr 2008 8:25am
Dear Birders,
Bruce Bowman has a wonderful page of maps showing the most common
birding locations talked about on this list. See
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/locations/index.html
To see Barton Pond's waterfowl, you can view from the "beach" on Huron
River drive west of Bird Road, west of the parking area at the dam, and
it should be the first area where you can pull off. There are other
parking areas along the road as you head west. Some offer a clear view
of the pond, others allow you to park and find trails that will lead
you closer.
Enjoy the exploration.
Here is a long google link to a map showing the area.

Subject: [birders] Re: Bird longevity - Red-tailed Hawk
From: jayt(AT)umich.edu
Date: 1 Apr 2008 8:34am
Hi All,
It looks like Mike was correct, and Bob Budge was giving him the
"straight story". According the the Bird Division database, and the
actual specimen tag, Bob Budge's female Red-tailed Hawk (UMMZ #201098)
died in summer of 1978 and had been in captivity since the fall of
1951. That would make her at least 26.5 years old.
Cheers,
Jason

I am curious about longevity in a single bird, while population
turnover is probably a more important issue?
Without telling you the whole story....I took over the Biology teaching
postion for Bob Budge in Greenville, MI. He is still, after his death,
well known in Greenville. He was there for 37 years, and that to me is
amazing all by itself. He became my Mentor, and I will always hold him
at the top of my list. This guy taught 3 generations in Greenville and
became my best resource after a bad day.
Well to my point.....Bob had several Red-tailed Hawks that were injured
and non-releasable in a very nice pen in his back yard. Bob had one of
his Hawks die one day. He took it to U of M and was told that it was
the longest lived Red-tail according to their records. I believe it was
27 years old.
For people at U of M.....do you have records of this? I am sure Bob
Budge was giving me the straight story. Thanks.

From: ddarm(AT)umich.edu
Date: 1 Apr 2008 9:09am
Dear Birders,
Birders help survey our Ann Arbor parks and nature areas for breeding
birds by volunteering to walk through the park of their choice on a
regular basis during the breeding season and make observations about
the birds they observe. We use the information to help the Natural
Areas Preservation Division of the city of Ann Arbor with parks
management. This year, we are hoping to get some information about
migrants as well. Join us on April 10th as we show you how to
participate in our Breeding Bird Survey and share the information from
past surveys. This will also be the time to lay claim to the park you'd
like to cover! Please call 734-996-3266 for more information or you can
respond to this email or simply join us!

Date: 1 Apr 2008 9:13am
Following my annual late-March/early-April routine, I've been making daily
morning stops at Chelsea State Game Area's Four Mile Lake access to
monitor for the arrival of Tree Swallows. This morning I received my
'April Fool'; I found a single Barn Swallow fighting the wind at the
southeast corner of the lake, as seen from the spit of land that juts
north into the lake from the boat launch loop. This beats my earliest
Barn Swallow record for CSGA by four days, and still leaves me Tree
Swallow-less for 08. Maybe tomorrow...

I was going to make a brief comment or 2 on banding and its effects on =
Birds. Most likely a hard thing to quantify. Think I did read something =
about a 1% mortality rate for Birds that are mist-netted. As you know, =
some species are much more difficult to remove than others. Patience and =
experience are both also factors, they don't also go hand in hand. Some =

aneurysms, usually at the aortic arch, where blood leaves the heart from =
the left ventricle.
It has been some years, and this was probably a freakish thing. There =

many Birds suffocated.
I know there was a situation where Turkey Vultures were getting =

Friends:
While standing on the pier at Neff Park this morning I watched at least a
thousand birds fly south along the shore of Lake St. Clair. During one
three-minute period, I counted 173 birds as they passed me. I was on the pier
for at
least 20 minutes and the movement was steady.
The migration was made up largely of robins, red-winged blackbirds and
grackles, but there were a few mourning doves and killdeer heading south, too.
This is the second time I've witnessed this phenomenon in this location. Both
times the birds have been flying into a stiff wind ahead of a strong cold
front.
Good birding!

Subject: [birders] Re: Loons aplenty
From: eba(AT)umich.edu
Date: 1 Apr 2008 10:43am
I viewed loons and other birds and creatures at Barton Pond yesterday from
about 2PM to 4:20PM, and saw many loons, sometimes at a distance, sometimes
quite close-up, during that time. I met Lee Hefner there and as we watched
them together, we counted 8 in one area at one time, and as I left I saw
another well separated from the 8 closer to the dam. It could have been
one of the 8, but I expect it was a different one, consistent with the
later reports of at least 10 there. All of the sightings were between the
Foster Natural Area and the dam. I have posted a number of pictures on the
Grove St. site:
http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html
I also witnessed and took a video clip of a loon doing the somersaulting
behavior which Lee mentions and which has been observed recently by others
on this list, but it seems to have inadvertently disappeared from the
camera (April Fool?). I'm going to see if it can be recovered, in which
case I'll try to find a way to share it, but for now, the stills are all I
can offer.
I also observed and have photos of a muskrat feeding along the bank in the
little bay where the Foster N.A. widens out, opposite the 3rd. turnout with
the utility pole. Got a bit of video of that, too, which hasn't
disappeared yet.
While I was there, a police van was observed parked in the 4th pull-out
west of the dam, and it ed there quite a while. I wondered if someone in
it was waiting for me to cross the tracks when I had finished there. But I
had parked in the lot for the Barton Nature Area and never found out why it
was there; I did see another (or the same?) van pass along the road as I
worked my way back down the trail to the Barton Dam and the RR underpass.
Seemed like more police presence there than I usually am aware of.
A great variety of ducks was in the little bay where the stream comes out
above the part of the Foster N.A. opposite the 3rd & 4th pullouts. There
was still an ice shelf upstream from that but it was open where the stream
came out, and I saw many scaup, bufflehead, various mergansers, ring-necks,
widgeons, goldeneye, etc. but in spite of my approaching slowly and using
the cover of trees & ridges as much as I could, they picked up an alarm
somehow, and before I could get in a position to examine them carefully &
get some photos of the more interesting ones, they spooked & were off down
the pond. Might be worth setting up an observation blind there...

When I was there late last week, a police car was parked in the second
pulloff, the one where vegetation blocks view of Barton Pond and where
there's no path down the bank to the railroad track. I think they were
looking for speeders. The speed limit along there is 35 mph, I think.
I had never before seen a police car parked in any of the Barton Pond
pulloffs.

Today we watched a snow goose land with some canada geese at a small
private lake (Willo's Lake, formerly Parr III) in Manchester Twp. near
Austin and Timberlake Rd. There were a couple dozen canada geese, but
only one snow goose. There were also many ring-necked ducks, both male
and female, and at least two pair of common mergansers.

Do you suppose it's possible it's a police officer taking his lunch in a
nice place? or was he parked there too long for that? Any evidence of a
radar gun on the dashboard or side window?

birds to my feeder again. Each person's suggestions of the type of seed, using
peanut butter feeders, using suet, adding some cover for the birds just confirms
to me how much you each enjoy birding and all aspects of it. My hats off to

Birders,
Just what we've been dreading. The AOU has re-split the Canada Goose =
into 8 subspecies - an astonishing 5 are thought to be regular in the =
Great Lakes region. Oddly, the Cackling Goose is now thought to be more =
closely related to the Barnacle Goose (which, by the way, was split into =
four subspecies). There are lots of other splits in the Anatidae - I =
guess someone completed some gene sequencing or something.
I guess it's good news for listers, but the forms are not known to be =
field identifiable.
For more details on these and other changes check out the new AOU report =
at http://aou.org/updates/1Apr
It's almost like they are changing these species just to get us to buy =
new books!
Good luck!

John Lowry
