This morning, a friend noticed a House Sparrow busy at one of my bluebird
boxes. I checked and found a fresh, completed nest which I promptly removed. I
also found a pair of cardinals beginning a nest in a large Burning Bush next to
the garage.

From: jayt(AT)umich.edu
Date: 3 Apr 2008 7:43am
Hi All,
Just for the record, the peregrines have not abandoned Burton Tower
altogether, at least not as of early this week. They have been perched
at the top of the tower regularly, and we have been collecting
waterfowl and shorebird remnants at the base of the tower. The best
time to see them has been just before and around sun-up on the east
side of the tower. I have seen one or the other, or both at this time
and location for several weeks now.
Cheers,
Jason

I continue to see one or two Peregrine Falcons around the main UM Hospital =

=20
I am not really sure that where they are present on the building is a good =
place to build a nest. Both spots are fully exposed to the elements. Anothe=
r problem I foresee if nesting occurs is that the glassed alcove will get c=
leaned sometime and the cleaning apparatus will have to be anchored from th=
e top of the alcove where the birds will be. It would be a disaster if the =
Peregrines were scared off their nest by window cleaners after they spent s=

Subject: [birders] Potential Threat to Hospital Peregrines
From: Jane Huggins <janeh(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 3 Apr 2008 10:25am
I don't know who is qualified to speak for the Peregrines, but I noticed
an announcement that may impact them greatly.
The hospital is apparently undergoing a roofing repair project, and I
think that the current area where the peregrines are hanging out is on the
schedule. There was an announcement in the hospital's Daily Bulletin
saying that the work will restart April 7th with a list of locations. The
project is scheduled to be completed in mid-Nov 2008, so perhaps they
could be convinced to adjust the schedule for minimal disturbance to the
peregrines. How long would nesting be expected to last?
If we are hoping that the hospital administration will be more
accommodating than the custodians of the bell tower, they should probably
be contacted soonest. I've copied the announcement and schedule below.

Starting Sept. 4, 2007, University Hospital began a two-phased effort to
replace its 20-year-old roof, emphasizing the safety of patients, visitors
and staff during construction. Nearly 190,000 square feet of roof will be
repaired or replaced.
After a winter break, work will recommence on April 7, 2008.
Latest News
A staging area and crane will be set up near Radiation Oncology on April
7. Parking in the M7 lot on the north side of the hospital near Radiation
Oncology will be impacted.
Roofing work begins around the Health System on April 14. Measures will be
taken to keep noise and odors from disrupting patient care.
The roofing project is scheduled for completion around mid-Nov. 2008.

Here are highlights from my morning at the Arb (central Ann Arbor):
2 Red-tailed hawks gorging on headless Fox squirrel
3 Double-crested cormorants (flyover)
Eastern phoebe (in Dow Prairie)
Golden-crowned kinglets (2 locations)
2 Northern flickers
Red-breasted nuthatches (at 4 locations)
4 Hermit thrushes (at 3 locations)
Fox sparrows (behind the caretaker's house, look for a parked white
trailer (minus a cab to pull it), walk up the hill on the path,
looking right beyond in the bushes into the clearing, in the company
of juncos, at 10:15 am when sun warmed the clearing). Yes, they were
singing.

From: Julie Craves <jcraves(AT)umd.umich.edu>

Over the last few days, we've had some new arrivals, including Eastern
Phoebe, Fox Sparrow, and Golden-crowned Kinglet. Rusty Blackbirds have
been seen both here on campus and at the sunflower fields at Hubbard and
Southfield. A flock of singing Common Redpolls was also there this past
weekend. The "Latest Sightings" page on the RRBO web site has kept up
with the city waterfowl.
I'll be starting nearly daily surveys from here on out.

Janet Hinshaw says there's more to the story regarding installing nest

No, that wasn't true. The DNR Peregrine person said that when they have
installed platforms, the birds have abandoned the site. So she suggested
we wait a year or two more and see if they are successful on their own.
It's not looking good for this year- there are pieces of limestone
falling off and they want to repair it before commencement. Since the
bird should be laying in the next couple of weeks, they may not nest this
year at all if they are disturbed at this critical time.

From what I've heard, the folks who monitor all the Peregrines in
southeastern Michigan were unable to provide a more suitable nesting
platform on the Bell Tower because access was denied to this historical
landmark. One would hope that the hospital would be more willing to give
access to their roof...

This presumed new location at the hospital is unknown for habitat
success.
Some have suggested that the Bell Tower nesting site was actually in
the
rain gutters. Not a good spot for eggs during a severe storm.

Subject: [birders] Tree Swallows
From: "Charles Owens" <vinblue(AT)cass.net>
Date: 3 Apr 2008 12:19pm
This afternoon at the Erie Waste Water Treatment plant on Lavoy road I
counted approx: 25 Tree Swallows skimming back and forth over the ponds.
Karl Exblom reported that yesterday he had between 80-100 Tree Swallows at
the same location. The plant is located 100 yards north of the
Ohio/Michigan line a few miles west of I-75.

Subject: [birders] Phoebe and sapsucker in Canton
From: "Bruce McCulloch" <flavus94(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 3 Apr 2008 3:20pm
At 2:45 this afternoon, I saw my first eastern phoebe of the spring doing
the typical tail bobbing. Also, a male yellow-bellied sapsucker was
quickly working its way through the woods. All of this was occurring in
the protected area behind the house.

Bruce,
I was just forwarding what I heard in a presentation prepared by Kariann
Anderson and presented at an Oakland Audubon Society meeting earlier this
year by one of her main assistants. I'm just a messenger....

Every day, the hummingbird eats its own weight in food.
You may wonder how it weighs the food.
It doesn't. It just eats another hummingbird.

At least three have moved into my immediate area, cooing from the trees
around my house. One has the funniest call: it can't do the first two
notes, so he(?) has to make do with just the last three "oooh, oooh, oooh."
I wonder what his buddies think about it.
