Subject: [birders] Interesting Mix of Birds Lake Erie
Metropark/Sterling State Park
From: MiHerp(AT)comcast.net
Date: 5 Apr 2008 4:14am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
One of the joys of working in Ohio all week was the chance to bird in that state
and then hit a few choice places on the way home today. Yesterday (04/03) I
spent the dusk and early dark hours at Irwin Prairie Nature Preserve in
Northwest Ohio. If you've never made it down there it is well worth the trip
this time of year. I had nothing less than 14 woodcocks calling, flying and
generally making themselves very obvious. Also seen there were:
Eastern Phoebe
Fox Sparrow
Chipping Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Golden Crowned Kinglet
Blue Winged Teals
Today, I had an interesting mix of birds at Lake Erie Metropark and Sterling
State Park as I was driving home. The highlight was a flock of no less than 200
tree swallows. Also
Ring necked Ducks
American Black Ducks
Mallards
Lesser Scaup
Red Head
Blue Winged Teal
Common Goldeneye
Bufflehead
Common Merganser
Red Breasted Merganser
Hooded Merganser
Ruddy Ducks
Pied Billed Grebe
Eared Grebe
Double Crested Cormorant
Red Tailed Hawk
Great Blue Heron
Downy Woodpecker
Eastern Phoebe
American Tree Sparrow
White Throated Sparrow
Song Sparrow
Rusty Blackbird
Redwing Blackbird
Common Grackle
If that weren't enough, while going into Lakeside Mall in Macomb County I
observed my first of the year fly-over GREAT EGRET.
All in all a good day for a quick birding trip by car/mall.

Subject: [birders] chipmunks not squirrels eating the birdfood
From: "Sarah Levin" <a.sarah.levin(AT)gmail.com>
Date: 5 Apr 2008 12:23am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Hi, I noticed over the last few days the birdfood in the feeder has been
reduced very quickly. I think I know why. There have been quite a few more
birds feeding this week but there is also a pesky little chipmunk munching
away. It's the no mess bird (seed) food, It has peanuts in it so that is why
I am not referring to it as birdseed. The squirrels are too fat to climb up
the poll (shephard's hook) but the chimpmunk (s)? are not so their weight
does not close the square feeder holes. It's not that I don't like
chimpmunks but I want to see the birds. Any suggestions?
Oh, weird thing-at least to me. I got absolutely no finches for almost a
year-I tried all sorts of things. Well, my neighbor inadvertantly (I think)
pushed the finch sock on one shepherd's hook closer to the shepherd's hook
holding the non-finch birdfeeder and all of a sudden I'm getting these
beautiful little yellow finches.
Thanks for your help with the chipmunks. Are there are any group
birdwatching walks coming up? I have trouble reading through all the code on
the list so thought I would just ask. Oh, any more binoculars that people
don't need? Also, any advice on digital cameras under $150.00?
Hope you all have a great birding weekend. I hear it's supposed to get up to
60 F

Flicker here, too, screaming his head off all morning. First time I

Boy, are they loud!

Yesterday I had a Flicker on the telephone pole doing his
"Wicka-Wicka-Wicks" thing. He also flew down and checked out a nestbox
that's there. He went inside for a minute then flew out and resumed calling
from a higher treetop. Unfortunately, Starlings had entered that same box
1/2 hour earlier so now they both know it's available and I'm sure the
Starlings will do their best and probably win out without my intervention.
Even though I can keep the Starlings away, it's tough to get the Flicker to
accept the box after their eggs were tossed out by the Starlings once
already last year. Fred in Warren

Subject: [birders] No March Butterflies--None!
The first butterflies of the 2008 Season in southeast Michigan finally
showed up on April 2 and 3. On April 2 Faye Stoner found two Mourning Cloaks
at Leonard's Preserve in southwest Washtenaw County near Manchester. The
next day I had 12 Mourning Cloaks and 1 Eastern Comma in a woodlot Dhu
Varren Woods in Ann Arbor.
These are incredibly late, first season sightings for butterflies by recent
standards. In checking back through the records of the Greater Washtenaw
County Survey, every year since 1994 one or more butterflies were reported
in the month of March. One year we even had a February butterfly! The
weather in March was pretty weird. There was much more snow than normal and
fewer sunny days. Temperatures were almost always in the below normal range
and the very few times it got up into 50's--when over-wintering butterflies
such the Mourning Cloak or the Eastern Comma could potentialy emerge from
their hibernation to fly around--the woods were either still covered with
snow or the day was cloudy and windy.
It will be interesting to see whether the butterfly season catches up more
back to normal as Spring progresses.

On a walk through Belle Isle this afternoon, I saw my first phoebes of the

other birds, but otherwise saw very little.
However, I did see a fresh Question Mark. It landed in the sun and leaves just
at my feet.
Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera. It's no longer March, but it was a
beautiful butterfly.

We had a very nice cowbird on our feeder this afternoon. I got a really good
look at him - 27x scope from about 30 feet away, so it was like having the
bird in my lap. I'd never noticed before what really gorgeous iridescence
they have in their plumage below the neck! Wonderful tones of blue-green in
the bright sun.
