Subject: [birders] RE: No March Butterflies--None!
From: pavlik(AT)comcast.net
Date: 6 Apr 2008 12:29am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
I did some birding through some of our southern counties including St. Joseph,
Cass and Branch today. I had a Comma and Morning Cloak Butterfly. My primary
interest was looking for waterfowl. Interesting to say the least. I stopped at
no less than 30 lakes. Branch county lakes were void of almost any waterfowl
save Canada Geese, the occasional Mute Swan and a C. Loon now and then. The
first lake I stopped at in St. Joseph county had three moderate sized mixed
flocks where I had 10 species. Then I had several lakes with nothing. Then in
Cass County I found one good lake along with five other lakes with virtually
nothing. Surprisingly, I found not a single Horned Grebe. Perhaps the best
sighting of the day was a group of ~100 Bonaparte's Gull in a flooded field just
south of the town of Quincy on Ray Quincy Rd.
Take care,
Tom Pavlik

Greetings Birders,
Late in the day yesterday, I restocked my feeders. There were 15 Northern
Cardinals. All were males, except two. One female Cardinal would pick up and
shell a sunflower seed. One of the males would run over to her and she would
feed him. This happened 4 times. Just wondering if anyone has seen this before,
outside of birds feeding her young.
Other birds of note at the feeders

1 Redpoll

Subject: [birders] Kent County: Lowell Lone Horned Lark (and Also
Grebes)
From: Bob Tarte <theduckpen(AT)att.net>
Date: 6 Apr 2008 12:09pm
The lone Horned Lark (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) that I saw this
time last year atop the Fifth Third Bank on M-21 just east of the Meijer
gas station is present again. If there are other larks in the immediate
vicinity (i.e., grassy areas near the bank), I didn't see them.
Also, the first quarter-mile of the Flat River north of M-21 in Lowell
yielded a few Common Mergansers and four Pied-bill Grebes this morning.

I have seen that sort of behavior not only in cardinals at my feeder and in
the wild, but also in goldfinches (also at my feeder) and in blue jays in
the wild. Seems that it is part of a mating ritual that is shared by many
birds.

Bob,
You won't do better than Julie Craves' excellent book, "The Birds of
Dearborn, An Annotated Checklist," available from:
http://www.lulu.com/content/758491
Also indispensable is Allen Chartier's "A Birder's Guide to Michigan."
Although it doesn't list arrival and departure times, it does include a
chart (spanning many pages) which uses bar graphs to indicate Status and
Occurrence of Michigan Birds in different parts of Michigan and at
different seasons of the year. The book is available through the ABA at:

If you check ebird.org, you will easily find this kind of statistics (per state,

think it should only get better with time.

It's a beautiful day for a stroll on the boardwalk around the North Bay
lagoon. Birds sighted:
=20
- Horned Grebe, with his beautiful golden horns glistening in
the sun - he was very close to the northernmost bridge on the boardwalk,
great opportunity for a good close look or photograph.
- Pied-billed Grebe
- Gadwall
- Ruddy Duck
- Redhead
- Bufflehead
- Common Merganser
- American Coot
=20
Sighted and heard earlier this morning on the lake:
- Common Loon

Also, an unidentified tern flew by my window. I could get my binocs
quick enough to make an ID. Definitely not a Caspian. =20

Is there a convenient reference source for migration arrival and =
departure times? I'm in Ann Arbor so a southern Michigan reference would =

The loon that's been hanging out at Fletcher Pond across from the
Humane Society on Cherry Hill Road in Superior Township is still
there today. So cool!

Subject: [birders] lower Detroit River arrivals
From: "Greg Norwood" <Greg_Norwood(AT)fws.gov>
Date: 6 Apr 2008 6:41pm
Hello,
The second day in a row of fantastic spring weather brought the arrival of
a common tern off Grosse Ile today and quite a few tree swallows. The
first hours of the morning brought continuous flocks of red-winged
blackbirds, common grackles, and rusty blackbirds numbering in the
thousands. A merlin and common loon flew over Humbug Marsh.

Subject: [birders] Re: March Butterflies--at least one!
From: Toni Spears <t_spears2000(AT)yahoo.com>

Roger,
We had one butterfly in March - a Mourning Cloak - on Saturday Mar. 29 - in the
woods north of Dexter. It was a sunny afternoon, but still chilly (less than 40
deg.). Saw two more Mourning Cloaks today - much warmer!

padding:0px } body.hmmessage { FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY:Tahoma } The first
butterflies of the 2008 Season in southeast Michigan finally showed up on April
2 and 3. On April 2 Faye Stoner found two Mourning Cloaks at Leonard's Preserve
in southwest Washtenaw County near Manchester. The next day I had 12 Mourning
Cloaks and 1 Eastern Comma in a woodlot Dhu Varren Woods in Ann Arbor.
These are incredibly late, first season sightings for butterflies by recent
standards. In checking back through the records of the Greater Washtenaw County
Survey, every year since 1994 one or more butterflies were reported in the month
of March. One year we even had a February butterfly! The weather in March was
pretty weird. There was much more snow than normal and fewer sunny days.
Temperatures were almost always in the below normal range and the very few times
it got up into 50's--when over-wintering butterflies such the Mourning Cloak or
the Eastern Comma could potentialy emerge from their hibernation to fly
around--the woods were either still covered with snow or the day was cloudy and
windy.
It will be interesting to see whether the butterfly season catches up more back
to normal as Spring progresses.
