Subject: [birders] Foresters Terns, St. Clair county

I just posted a mediocre photo on the umich Grove Street album of one of =
several Foresters Terns, first of the season seen by us at Deckers =
Landing Public Access on the North Channel of the St. Clair River, St. =
Clair Flats.
Our first outing in 2 weeks (borrowed vehicle) after our horrible auto =
accident. The weather indeed was terrible cold, sleet, drizzle, fog and =
rain.
In the short while around the marsh, and at Anchor Bay also seen were =
American Coots, Pied-billed Grebes, Mute Swans, Greater Scaups =
(hundreds), Mallards, Common Mergansers, Canada Geese, Tree Swallows =
(dozens). Many ducks are still way out on Anchor Bay too far for my =
scope to pull in. Many Ring-billed and Herring Gulls plus the expected =
Red-wing Blackbirds, Grackles, Cowbirds, Starlings by the hundreds plus =
dozens of Rusty Blackbirds!
Back at home in the past 2 days we've had our first of the season Yellow =
Bellied Sapsuckers, & Chipping Sparrows at our feeders, 4 to 6 Savannah =
Sparrows and Wild Turkeys across the road in the big hayfield. Wilsons =
Snipes winnowing overhead daily. An Eastern Phoebe made a short =
appearance in our yard. =20

Someone mentioned earlier that they have clear/ultraviolet window clings
they were selling. I found those in a catalog, but if they are available
locally, I'd be willing to support my local business...

Subject: [birders] Re: Window Decals
From: "Wild Birds Unlimited" <RosannKovalcik(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 13 Apr 2008 7:42am
As someone who hears about birds that have met their death by flying into a
window on a regular basis, I feel compelled to educate as many people as
possible about how to prevent this sad situation. The American Bird
Conservancy estimates we lose millions of birds each year as a result of
this challenge the birds face.
To prevent this, the Window Alerts referred to are placed on the outside of
the window and are made of a component that brilliantly reflects the
ultraviolet sunlight. With vision twelve times better than ours, birds see
this as a "stoplight". Very importantly, the decals need to be replaced
every 12 to 18 months as they lose their effectiveness with the fading of
the UV coating as a result of weather exposure.
If only we could get the word out to everyone before the accidents happen.
I had a customer bring me a beautifully plumaged sapsucker yesterday,
recently dead from a strike into his window. I marveled at the tail
feathers which were spiky at the tips. I examined its feet, impressed with
the equipment that allowed this bird to create the sapwells that are
important to the migrating hummingbirds.
The customer bought the Window Alerts from us and taught me a lesson - write
about and advertise this very important preservation tool. Let's get the
word out.

Greetings,
While updating my website and looking out my french doors once in a while at my
feeders and the lake, I noticed some decent yard birds. I live on Wampler's Lake
in Brooklyn, MI.
1 Horned Grebe
4?Common Loons
1 Rough-winged Swallow
2 Purple Finches still at the feeder hanging out with a handful of House
Finches.
Several of the?usual suspect ducks: Bufflehead, Ring-necked Ducks, Wood Ducks
and scaup.
The feeders are just full of birds today, which I am sure is due to the weather.
4 species of woodpeckers, juncos, Am Tree Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, Fox
sparrows, N. Cardinals...loads of blackbirds?just to name a few.
Get out and bird today!

Hi all:
For those planning a trip to Whitefish Point in the next week or two be
forewarned- There's LOTS of snow.
Susan and I just returned from Paradise this morning. It snowed close to a foot
on Friday night! And- there was already 2-3 feet on the ground - everywhere.
That aside, we had a wonderful weekend there. The bay is completely frozen (OK
there is a very distant shipping channel) but the big water is open.
We had lots of redpolls, tree sparrows, juncoes, blackbirds and very few
raptors- mostly Bald Eagles and 4 Northern Shrikes (two with a mile of the
Tahquamenon rivermouth both north and south)
Our real treat was a small flock of five very large-billed Red Crossbill between
Paradise and WPBO. Sneaking up on them with our Prius allowed amazing close
looks. In fact two actually came up to the can and disappeared beneath us!
I'll be headed back in two weeks for more birds and hopefully less snow.
More info and pictures on my web page.
