[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Washtenaw County Hotspots with Maps From: pavlik(AT)comcast.net Date: 16 Apr 2008 12:38am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Birders, Bruce Bowman and I have collaborated on a nice little project. We've put together two Google Maps for birding Hotspots in Washtenaw County. He has put links to each of these on his webpage. The link to that is: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/locations/index.html At the top of his list there is a link to eastern Ann Arbor/Washtenaw County hotspots and one for the western hotspots. Main Street though the center of Ann Arbor was the dividing line. In the end we came up with 37 of the best spots. Opinions will certainly vary. When you select either link from Bruce's page you will be taken to the respecitve Google Map. The map will have numbered icons as well as the numbers and location along the left side of the page. By default, the maps will be in 'map' view. You may choose to select 'Satellite' view as necessary (button in upper right section of the map). This is especially helpful when you are zooming in to a specific location where you can see entrance streets and parking areas. Special care was taken to get as close as possible to the entrance. Also by default, the map is zoomed out to give perspective to the locations. You will want to zoom in to get details on any location (you can zoom in remarkably close). Clicking a spot does not automatically zoom in on the location. To zoom in you can select the plus sign on the vertical bar on the left part of the map. You can also double click anywhere on the map (except over a location number) to zoom in one level at a time. You can pan in any direction by using the directional arrows in the upper left of the map or click and drag using your mouse. I would also like to thank Dea Armstrong for her input. Any mistakes are surely mine. Corrections/comments can be sent to me at pavlik(AT)comcast.net Enjoy, Tom Pavlik --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Snowy Egret @ Pt. Mouillee - Tues. evening From: "Jerry Jourdan" <jourdaj(AT)gmail.com> Date: 16 Apr 2008 7:36am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Birders, I saw a single adult SNOWY EGRET in the Lautenshager Unit (Middle Causeway) of Pt. Mouillee yesterday afternoon at ~ 4 pm. It was roosting in the wet fields just east of the large ponds. Among it were dozens of Blue- and Green-winged Teal, Northern Shovelers, and a flock of (65) Dunlin. Tree Swallows were out in force, as was the entire NA population of American Coot. Otherwise, it was very quiet. Extremely windy with choppy waters till about 6pm. A Marsh Wren along the Middle Causeway helped me find my lost tripod leg..... Every woodpecker *except* Red Headed. Pine Siskin. Pine Warbler. Myrtle Warbler. Brown Creeper. Purple Finch. Barred owl. Eastern Phoebe. Hermit Thrush. and many many more but wont bore.... Great am on all of the Discovery Center trails. Area of White Pine stands near group camp on Cedar Lake was teeming with warblers and i suspect more species were missed. Take the Bog trail almost to the end and go left (east) into the pine stand. Enjoy Love, Jeff P.S Green darner, mourning cloak, eastern comma, four species of frogs.... --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] In Between Seasons From: Melissa Pappas <ftknoxfox53(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 16 Apr 2008 5:12am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- We still have several juncos and at least one female red-breasted nuthatch visiting our feeders. We also had our first (known) chippie in the yard yesterday afternoon. This "in between" time is so much fun as one can see our winter visitors changing into their dapper threads prior to departure and watch our summer residents start the process. Have our hummingbird feeders cleaned and a couple filled in preparation for the first arrivals. Can't be long before we are chasing warblers all over the area. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] owls From: Jan Berry <jeberry(AT)umich.edu> Date: 16 Apr 2008 9:27am Yesterday morning (a little before 6 am) heard great horned owls hooting at each other in Cherry Hill Nature Preserve, Superior Township. There were at least 2 of them. Possibly 3. Not sure where in the preserve they were, as I was hearing them from the road. Is this territorial at this time of year?? Or more "friendly" than that?? Meant to post this yesterday. Did not hear them this morning, but I have heard this type of responsive hooting previously at this location. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Three Wren Morning From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu> Date: 16 Apr 2008 11:03am Howdy; The air was full of Wren song this morning - strident Carolinas, jabbering House and a twittering Winter wren. As usual, the Winter wren loves our brush piles, and the House wren loves our neighbor's covered back porch. White-throated sparrows and a wonderful singing Hermit thrush chimed in, along with other recent usuals. Still no Myrtles or Kinglets seen or heard in the yard, but the Pine warbler persists, as do a small bunch of Junco. Also had a fair sized Garter snake (Butler's I think) being very sluggish, and an equally sleepy Wood frog.
