[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Second spring migration walk through Nichols Arboretum this morning From: Catherine Carroll <songsparrow(AT)wowway.com> Date: 17 Apr 2008 5:52am --Apple-Mail-1-338029759 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed Birders, It's been a long winter for us Michiganders, but it appears that spring may indeed have actually arrived. If you have a choice, don't spend it indoors. Please join the Washtenaw Audubon Society sponsored spring migration walks through Nichols Arboretum this morning. This is the second of eight Thursday morning walks. A report from the Arb yesterday found ... Pine Warbler - 3 Black-throated Green - 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler - Many Hermit Thrush - 1 Pine Siskin carrying nesting material, odd but something to look out for. E. Pheobe - 2 Tree, Barn and Rough-winged Swallows ... and don't forget winter wren, thrashers and sparrows. Last night was a fine night for migration and other birds will be found. Details below. Nichols Arboretum for Spring Migration Apr 17 2008 8:00 AM Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Riverview Drive cul-de-sac off Geddes Road. Bird the Arb from start to finish of spring migration. This is our second season of leaderless spring migration walks through the Arb and this field activity is well on the way to being an annual birding success. As with the fall migration walks, they are well-attended and you will have the opportunity to meet and enjoy birding with others. The Arb is fantastic for spring migration and should not be missed. Everyone will also have an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular trilliums that bloom throughout the Arb's wooded hillsides. These are leaderless walks. Don't be shy; introduce yourself and set out to acquaint yourselves with the beauty of Ann Arbor's central park. Visitors to Ann Arbor, you won't be disappointed. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net> Date: 17 Apr 2008 7:18pm The large vernal pond on the west side of M-52 is at Waldo Rd., three miles south of I-94. I stopped there today on the way to Nan Weston Preserve. The only shorebird I found was a lone Killdeer. At Nan Weston Preserve I was hoping to find this year's Louisiana Waterthrush. I didn't find one. On the way home I drove Prospect Hill Rd. and Kendall Rd., north of Nan Weston Preserve. I found Vesper Sparrows on Prospect Hill Rd., where Dan Sparks-Jackson reported them earlier. The birds flew over to Kendall Rd. while I was there. Also on Prospect Hill Rd. I found a pair of Eastern Phoebes, probably with a nest nearby. At Dolph Park in the late morning I had a few yellow rumps, two Ruby- crowned Kinglets, and two Golden-crowned Kinglets. There was also a Blue- winged Teal, my first of the year. There was just one Hermit Thrush. I was disappointed to find no Fox Sparrows. Bruce From: "Bruce M. The consensus seems to be this: it is your list, so you can define the criteria however you want. In my own yard list I have two categories: 1) birds that have alighted on my property, and 2) birds that I have seen whilst my feet have been on my property (each counts as a species, i.e. a "fly-over" does not count as 0.5 species). I am strict regarding the latter category in that I do not count birds seen even a few meters off my property (peculiar, perhaps, but show me a birder who is not). I guess I could have a third category of birds that I have heard but not seen (while on my property, of course), but whenever I hear a new bird I stay put until I see it. Given my own particular location (downtown Ypsilanti), my best bet for adding species to my yard list is fly-overs (although recent unexpected sightings of a Field Sparrow and Yellow-rumped Warbler have been encouraging).
