Subject: [birders] Dearborn birds
From: Julie Craves <jcraves(AT)umd.umich.edu>
Date: 19 Apr 2008 9:36am
An interesting mix of winter and spring the last few days. On Thursday,
a singing Pine Siskin was in east Dearborn. Yesterday, four Purple
Finches visited my east Dearborn feeder. Meanwhile, Common Terns and
Eastern Meadowlark were found along the Rouge River channel. Today, the
first Palm Warblers were found, including a very bright individual which
may have been one of the eastern race.

In the backyard today, both red breasted nuthatch and pine warbler. To
my mind that's a mix of seasons, and I like it.

Starting April 21 all of Nichol's Drive along the Huron River in the Arbore=
tum will be closed to pedestrian traffic for river bank stabilization. I gu=
ess this work is all part of the effort to restore native ecosystems in the=
Arb, right?--Well actually no! Erosion is a natural force that shapes all =
riverine habitats over time. What is being done bank stabilization is desig=
ned to stop erosion and is an artificial intrusion into an environment. It =
shares many qualities with channelization and damming of rivers in that it =
prevents natural disturbance factors from working as they should. There is =
nothing natural about it.
=20
Also compliments on the timing of this bank stabilization development. It w=

which is to be shut down.

Birders,
This morning my birding class and I found an interesting mix of birds at =
Crosswinds Marsh. Perhaps most interesting was the singing male Yellow =
Warbler, the earliest I've ever had in Michigan, along with an early =
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Other interesting birds included a flyover =
Greater Yellowlegs several winnowing Wilson's Snipe, a male Blue-winged =
Teal, and good numbers of Barn Swallows (Tree Swallows present also).

I completely agree! The Arb is becoming a common city savanna-park. Combined
with another warm spring (as it appears) I might just spend my time elsewhere.
The overall amount of clearing and burning is brutal.
Sadly,

Ontbirders: Of interest to any of you who use Highway # 3 [ Talbot Trail ]
from Windsor to Chatham-Kent for Spring birding.
Beginning Mon., April 21, 2008 Wind Turbine parts will be transported,
via H # 3, from a ship in Windsor to a new Wind Farm in the vicinity of Port
Alma--along the lake. There is a total of 44 turbines ; each turbine requires
7 loads = 308 loads. Some loads will be 196 ft. long. [ Wow ]. There will
be
Police escort, front and back, for every load. The loads will be on this
highway
from 8:30 a.m.--till 5:30 pm, every week day- Mon. thru' Fri. , for 12 weeks
!!!!!!!
Roughly April 21 to July 11. Week-ends are free.
Police have issued a request that drivers find an alternative route.
They have not printed a "Closed Road" statement to my knowledge, but
have said to expect delays----well, I guess so !
Today, I took the journey from my house, in Blenheim, to the Harbour in
Wheatley,
a distance of 54 km. searching for a suitable alternate route. As soon as I saw
the turbine
"bases" in near-by fields, I drove North 1 concession, then turned South twds.
Wheatley.
This was in the Port Crewe area. These concessions running parallel with H # 3
were OK,
but slow-going and already very dusty --with little traffic--today ! However, I
discovered that
they too had Wind Farm access roads across them --so may be of NO benefit to
us.
My only suggestions might be to get where you're going Early, and stay Late !
Don't we always anyway ?
A Map Art of Southwestern Ontario will be a definite help. Do pack loads of
Patience !
---and the hardest task for me--Don't even think of parking on the road
shoulders to see
those flocks of Shorebirds. Those 308 loads are VERY WIDE ! + a lot of Police
presence !
Of course you might just wish to settle at Rondeau Park for your birding.
Those "Pelee birds" fly over us too you know. We'd love to have you !
Sorry, I have no suggestions, re roads, for our U.S. friends. Perhaps someone
from the Essex- Windsor-Pelee area could comment on that. You will be
"following " the loads, we will be "meeting" the loads.
Hope this message is of some benefit--at least a "head's-up ".

Subject: [birders] Exoticbirding.com Inquiry
From: millerr(AT)umich.edu
Date: 19 Apr 2008 4:08pm
I am considering the idea of booking a tour (birds plus photography)
with a company called Exotic Birding (web site: www.exoticbirding.com),
run by Linda Fellows and Jim Wittenberger. If anyone has had any
experience with this group and can advise me about the company or its
tours, I'd be grateful for an offline reply to millerr(AT)umich.edu.
Thanks.
Rich Miller
PS: a related question, come to think of it. I'd also be glad to hear
if you have other guides or companies to recommend for bird photography
tours. I am not interested in the many excellent birding tours, you
know, where the bird is very far away and you can figure out what it is
but it is a just a dot on the photograph. The target here is tours
aimed at bird photographers, where you sneak up close enough to the
birds to see the whites of their eyes. Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: [birders] Monroe County Birds
From: pavlik(AT)comcast.net
Date: 19 Apr 2008 8:43pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Birders,
I birded Monroe County this morning and early afternoon, primarily at Erie Marsh
Preserve (Erie Gun Club) and Pt. Mouilee. I had a respectable showing of
shorebirds between the locations:
Erie Marsh
- L. Yellowlegs (3)
- W. Snipe (20+)
- Solitary Sandpiper (1)
- Spotted Sandpiper (1)
Pt. Mouillee
- Dunlin (~150)
- Black-bellied Plover (5)
- Pectoral Sandpiper (5)
- L. Yellowlegs (8)
The shorebird habitat at Pt. Mouilee is restricted to the flooded corn field
area a couple hundred yards past the Siegler Rd. parking area.
Other birds of interest were:
Erie Marsh
- Pine Warbler; as far removed from it's preferred habitat as I have ever seen.
- Yellow Warbler (3)
- Sora (3-4)
- Winter Wren (1)
- Carolina Wren (1)
- Rusty Blackbird (5)
- N. Mockingbird (1)
Pt. Mouilee
- Marsh Wren
- BC Night-Heron
17 species of waterfowl in all.
Take care,
Tom Pavlik

I got the pleasure of a new yard bird this morning.... A gorgeous male
Purple Finch. Even got off a few shots of him feeding on the thistle sock.
At one point a male House Finch was feeding side by side with the Purple for
amazing comparisons. I'm sure he's just passing thru but what a thrill to
have him here even if just for a little while...

At 8:15 tonight I foiund a Virginia Rail on the south side of Cherry Hill
Rd., 0.2 miles east of Prospect Rd. -- next to the line of telephone poles
that runs perpendicular to the road to the south. It was very close to the
edge of the road when I heard it, and came completely out of the thick dead
grasses and into the open for a few seconds at one point in response to my
crude impressions. This is exactly a year after two Virginia Rails arrived
in the wetlands along Vreeland Rd., a mile south of this spot.
I also saw a female Northern Harrier hunting in the fields on Gotfredson
Rd., south of Vreeland.

From: Ann Zinn <annczinn(AT)umich.edu>

The owls were at it again last night, around 2 am. Not quite so
creatively vocal this time, but still noisy.
If they return reliably, I'll let everyone know. It's possible that
you might be able to raise them at the bridge on Marshall Rd. between 9
mile and Silver Lake Rd. north of Whitmore Lake.
Allen says they likely nest in March and April. Does this mean they
are "courting" or being territorial with all that commotion? Or are
they just having an animated conversation. :-)
