[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] RE: Sunday Yard Birds From: "LaHaie, Ivan J." <ivan.lahaie(AT)gd-ais.com> Date: 22 Apr 2008 8:45am This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I need to make a correction to my post below. I wasn't certain about the vireo ID because the song didn't sound like a typical yellow-throated, so I went to several recordings and am now certain the vireo I heard was a blue-headed instead. Sorry. I'll be a little more meticulous next time before I post. =20 Ivan ________________________________ From: LaHaie, Ivan J.=20 Sent: Monday, April 21, 2008 8:18 AM To: 'birders(AT)umich.edu' Subject: Sunday Yard Birds Had a yellow-throated vireo, blue-gray gnatcatcher, and brown thrasher singing in the yard yesterday (along with all the usual suspects) while my wife was cutting my hair. =20 Beats the heck out of anything in a barber shop! =20 Ivan --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] bobwhite From: Jan Berry <jeberry(AT)umich.edu> Date: 22 Apr 2008 8:54am This has been a great week for morning sounds. Not only were the toads singing this morning just before 6, but I heard a bobwhite call on Cherry Hill Road about 1/8 mile east of the Cherry Hill Nature Preserve in Superior Township. First one of those I've heard in the area. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] blue jays From: Sherri Smith <grackle(AT)umich.edu> Date: 22 Apr 2008 10:37am If blue jays live around you and you listen for it, you can here them speaking to each other is quiet pleasant voices unlike the voice they yell "Jay, jay" in. This sound is what they say to another bird (or person) that they like. And they make their fabulous bugling noise, during which they bounce up and down. They have even more things to say if you pay attention. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Springsters trickling in; Fine WX From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu> Date: 22 Apr 2008 10:56am Howdy. First Solitary vireo and Fox sparrows of the season this morning. Winter wren and Pine warbler seem to have departed. House and Carolina wrens are everywhere on the West side of Chelsea proper. Eastern meadowlarks, Song and Field sparrows have returned to the farm on Zeeb in earnest. Bluebird pair seems attracted to hole in big Black cherry along Zeeb across from the farm. Bobwhite calling in the evenings. WX: A fine early Spring stretch of weather will fade into the weekend, with a series of fronts that will cool temps back down to near normal. Nothing looks like a washout but Friday and Saturday could be drippy. Skies should settle down and temps will cool considerably by early next week. Maps are looking a little foreboding a week or so out, but this probably will change as time passes. Anyway, no real outbreaks of freaky late cold look plausible at this time. Heronry From: "The Farmers" <ajf-jlf(AT)sbcglobal.net> Date: 22 Apr 2008 1:26pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Two weeks ago I first noticed what I believe to be a new heronry in the = extreme southern part of Washtenaw County. What appeared at that time = to be a single nest under construction high in a tree along the Saline = Riverat is now one of at least 6 nests and very likely more. I live 3/4 = mile downstream and daily see the birds shuttling between their new = homes and Milan's Ford Lake. It's possible that these birds have relocated from an earlier heronry of = similar size on the east side of Maple Road about 1/3 mile downstream = from the Maple Road Bridge. For those who bird in this part of the = county, the new(?) heronry is roughly 250 yards south of Mooreville Road = about a quarter mile east of Mooreville. It is south of the two story = house at 1201 Mooreville Rd. and across the road from Budney = Landscaping. The intervening riverine forest will largely, if not = entirely, block the view of all but the highest of the nests in the next = week or two. I placed to the question with Tony Reznicek of the University Michigan Herbarium (I consider him the "supreme court" on these issues), and he says coltsfoot. I was concerned that the leaf-lie structures were too fleshy for coltsfoot and some other characteristics, but I expect Tony is right. --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] help! bird expertise needed From: "Bruce Robertson" <roberba1(AT)msu.edu> Date: 22 Apr 2008 3:49pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hello all, I just moved into the state from Montana and will be starting some grassland bird research and would really love to tap into the local bird expertise. In collaboration with the Great Lakes BioEnergy Research Center and TNC we are beginning a research project investigating the effect of various biofuel crops (corn, switchgrass, mixed-grass prairie) on avian biodiversity and abundance. We are also interested doing some focal work on the examining the effect of patch area and patch edges on a focal species of grassland bird, preferably and edge/area sensitive, and relatively abundant species. The initial candidate list of species to work on in Michigan would seem to include Eastern Meadowlark, Savannah Sparrow and Bobolink. I'd really love to hear from any grassland bird-o-philes about whether you tend to see these species as highly abundant in grassland patches that you've birded. If you have other species of obligate grassland birds (not edgy ones) that you think could be a good species to work with, I'd love to hear your input as well. Incidentally, I am looking for large patches of switchgrass within which to do some surveys and limited insect sampling, but am having a tough time finding large patches of switchgrass (>15 acres). Any help on that would also be deeply appreciated. I hope I can yank in a few choice species and cool observations for the listserv. Many thanks! Bruce Robertson Postdoctoral Fellow W.K. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] RE: OT: Coyote at Barton Nature Area From: "Bob Bethune" <poihths(AT)comcast.net> Date: 22 Apr 2008 10:00pm There is a fox living in the small city park near Packard & Eisenhower. He's been seen by my neighbors who have houses that back up to the park. We saw him in front of our house early one morning last week, headed up the sidewalk toward Buhr Park. Some people who live closer to County Farm Park than I do are aware of coyote who seem to live there. About two years ago during the winter I saw three or four deer in the park located south of Packard and east of the intersection of Packard and Eisenhower. I think urban large mammals are more common than we realize. Sunday, 20 April 2008 This noon at Barton Nature Area, we saw a coyote coming from the railroad tracks, crossing the main path, and then crossing the side trail to the meadow. Another person walking in the meadow also saw the coyote closer to the river and got a picture of it. It may not have been coincidence that two pairs of Canada geese began honking excitedly from the field across the railroad tracks and then circled around overhead several times just before we saw the coyote. I found a Lincoln's Sparrow sneaking through the underbrush along the big marsh in Cherry Hill yesterday morning. Also in Cherry Hill were at least three Brown Thrashers and a Gray Catbird. I encountered a Broad-winged Hawk along Cherry Hill (east of the preserve) that may have been gathering nesting materials. Keep an eye out if you're passing through this area. Later in the day I ran into another Broad-winged soaring in the area of Mud Lake at the western end of Loveland Rd. in Waterloo SRA. Tonight just after dark, I heard a single gray treefrog calling from the flooded farm field on Vreeland Rd., just east of Stommel. It was accompanied by many chorus frogs, spring peepers and American toads. A pretty bare bones report, but I don't have time to be more detailed.
