Subject: [birders] With rain come the White-throats
From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 25 Apr 2008 7:41am
Howdy. The overnight rain seems to have deposited a bushel of
White-throated sparrows.
I stopped counting at 25 birds in the yard and environs. Also a singing
Hermit thrush,
adding an occasional solo to the chorus of Oh Canada. Spring continues to
march in....
WX:... though it will take a step back over the next few days. A muggy,
showery day,
and then temps will begin to slide into next week. Below normal temps will
feel very
chilly after our recent burst of early June weather.

Not sure if any of you saw this the other morning, but there is a webcam
in San Jose, CA that has two adults with three babies and an egg. It's
very interesting and a live feed. Thought I would share! They are both
very attentive with the little ones :-)

Subject: [birders] Aussie birder needs help re. northern Mich. birds
From: "Bruce M. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 25 Apr 2008 11:05am
I'm passing this on for Phil Hansbro in Australia. He apparently will
have just one day--May 14--for looking for
Yellow Rail
Sharp-tailed Grouse
Connecticut Warbler
Le Conte's Sparrow
in northern Michigan. He will surely not get Connecticut Warbler as May
14 is a week or more early for this bird. He's okay for Yellow Rail (and
Sharp-tailed Grouse--resident), but I don't know the normal arrival date
for Le Conte's Sparrow in northern Michigan. If you know, please give
Phil the date.
If you can help him find any of these birds or suggest some best places
to look, please email him offlist.
Thanks.

HI
I will be traveling from Australia to do some birding in Michigan on the
14th and 15th of May. I will be going on a Kirtland's warbler trip on
the 15th. I am very keen to see Yellow Rail, Sharp-tailed Grouse,
Connecticut Warbler and Le Conte's Sparrow. Would you know the best
place to see the birds in Michigan (or even be able to come with me and
help me see them!!). I will have a rental car.
Thank you very much for any help

Subject: [birders] Arboretum (Ann Arbor) - Palm Warbler
From: "Joseph W. Brown" <josephwb(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 25 Apr 2008 2:24pm
I saw a brilliant Palm Warbler at the Arboretum today at 12:30. It
was near the path running along side the river. Also nearby saw a
Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher. Many White-throated Sparrows about, but did
not see any Hermit Thrushes or Yellow-rumped Warblers. Heard but did
not see two Solitary Vireos.

Subject: [birders] Dearborn birds (Summer Tanager)
From: Julie Craves <jcraves(AT)umd.umich.edu>
Date: 25 Apr 2008 2:25pm
As Dave Sing noted, there was a large influx of White-throated Sparrows
overnight, with many in the area today. A female-plumaged tanager was
seen by several of us high in the treetops which we concluded was a
Summer Tanager (not an early date for this species here, although it
would be over a week early for Scarlet Tanager). Other new arrivals were
Yellow Warbler, Black-and-white Warbler, and Blue-headed Vireo. Two
female-plumaged Purple Finches were also recorded today, as well a
lingering Dark-eyed Junco.
A House Wren arrived in my east Dearborn yard yesterday, and I still
have Red-breasted Nuthatches coming to my feeder -- we've banded 25 in
the yard since November, with about a dozen present over most of the
period. I'll post a little update summarizing that interesting story
once they've all left.

Subject: [birders] pine warbler up north
From: "Sally K Scheer" <winerat(AT)villagecorner.com>
Date: 25 Apr 2008 3:55pm
Just had a few days here this week but had a nice greeting. A pine warbler
has been on the deck twice this week. Once it waited for me to get three
pictures, one of which was of him singing. Surprise! the song was one I had
attributed to a different bird! Live and learn.
Rounding out the deck visitors was a red breasted woodpecker, several
chickadees, several chipping sparrows, a pair of juncoes, constantly calling
flickers.
Also had a pair of kildeer on the beach, one of them giving the broken wing
act. Looked for a nest or eggs on the sand but there were none. I guess it
figured I was a little too close for comfort though I was a good distance
away and watching thru the bins only.
Further down the beach was a pair of Common Mergansers. Of course, many
gulls and geese in the lake as well.

From: "Andrea" <bainesa(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 25 Apr 2008 4:27pm
I took a quick walk through the Arb this afternoon, and things seem to be
picking up. I saw my first of the season black-and-white warbler in a
dead tree near the giant rhododendron and my first of the season palm
warbler in the trees by the river. There were also large flocks of
white-throated sparrows and a hermit thrush in the woods up the path from
the rhododendron. Like the past few times I have been, there were
yellow-rumps near the river, pine warblers singing in several locations,
and quite a few blue-gray gnatcatchers. Happy Birding!

This afternoon about 4:15 I saw a pair of white-crowned sparrows in the

After seeing many white-throated sparrows in several places over the past

At 11:47, my wife saw a brilliant Male feeding on
Grape Jelly in the feeder she placed in the same

multiple times throughout the day. He was also seen
flying into the Cottonwood tree that held an Oriole

A white throated sparrow and a flicker were in the yard today. First of the
season for both. I was also delighted with fly overs from a red-tailed hawk and
a crow.
There was an interesting story about blue jays on Channel 4 news this evening.
Apparently stop signs were being vandalized ( I missed which city) so a camera
was set up to catch the vandalizing paint pickers. Come to find out it was blue
jays who were peeling off the paint! It was speculated that they may be
missing something from their diet or they are just collecting shiny decorations
for their nest.
Happy Birding!
