[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] brown thrasher? From: Kevin Meinka <kmeinka(AT)charter.net> Date: 27 Apr 2008 6:10am As I was listening to the birds this morning I heard a very complex very beautiful bird call. It was a mix of mostly musical, some un-musical phrases, and each phrase was sung twice, followed by a pause then a new phrase. I first thought it might be a grey catbird, which I have regularly in the yard in the summer, but it didn't quite sound the same. I only managed a brief glimpse at the bird in my binoculars and it had a long, slightly curved, beak and spotted under parts. Of course it was right in the sun so I couldn't get a good idea of what its coloring was other than it was darker on top, lighter on bottom, with the darker spots on the uunderside. Given this very vague description could this be a brown thrasher? Any other ideas? It did strike me as being a bit larger than a catbird would be as well. I spent the next hour or so trying to get another look at it, without any luck. I heard it plenty more though. In my search I did see a house wren, a white-throated sparrow and had a sandhill crane fly over head. --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Sat. April 26-Point Pelee-Blackburnian Warbler From: "Laura Pollitz" <pollitz1(AT)comcast.net> Date: 27 Apr 2008 9:20am I went to Point Pelee yesterday (April 26) and saw 7 species of warbler: Yellow Yellow-rumped Common Yellowthroat Nashville (several!) Black and White (one) Ovenbird (one) Blackburnian male (one) I saw a female tanager, and must confess that I'm not sure which species. And as I was lowering my binoculars, I also saw the north end of a southbound hummingbird as it whizzed past. Happy trails, Laura-Pollitz, Dearborn --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Nest decorating From: "Mag Tait" <mtait(AT)umich.edu> Date: 27 Apr 2008 10:08am We had dogs playing in the yard yesterday, tearing around with toys. I was looking outside at the breakfasting birds just now and saw a bird fly under the Cedar tree that is behind our bird feeders. Birds often drop seeds and it is where I regularly see ground feeders. I was hoping for a white throated sparrow, but saw instead a Titmouse perched atop a plush dog toy, busily pecking away. It just left with a beak full of red plush fibers as big as its head. It avoided the bright yellow, seeming to prefer the red. That will be a fancy nest. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] The return of Ripkin? From: Melissa Pappas <ftknoxfox53(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 27 Apr 2008 7:11am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Friday evening I was excited to see a gorgeous, male Baltimore Oriole back on one of the hummingbird feeders we have out. He was very quiet, so I almost overlooked him. (He has since become more vocal.) As the feeder slowly twisted with his weight, I saw the glint of sun off what I think is a band on his leg. Could it be Ripkin the feisty oriole that Allen banded during one of our hummer sessions? I would like think so, but obviously can't be certain unless he is recaptured and the band is read. It certainly is wonderful to see spring waking up the yard. The white-throated sparrows are calling all over. Yesterday, the yard was totally full of blue jays. I've never seen so many in the yard at one time. Reminds me of the massive jay flocks that we've seen up at Whitefish Point in the fall. I guess it's time to head home as most of them aren't around this morning. Yet to see the first hummingbird of the season, but the feeders (only 3 at this point) are clean and full. I know that the orioles will make good use of them, so no worries that there are too many feeders too soon. It's a good time to be in Michigan! It was in typical habitat along Tonguish Creek near Hulsing Elementary School. I was using the front carrier for our 11 month old daughter so I left my binoculars at home. Of course, the bird offered what would have been very nice magnified views. Should have used the backpack carrier!! [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Oriole Friday, Grosbeak Saturday, HUMMINGBIRD Sunday! From: Melissa Pappas <ftknoxfox53(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 27 Apr 2008 6:01pm What a great weekend! After such a daunting winter, to have three great birds arrive early... Friday marked the return of Ripkin (or, at least, I'm pretty sure it's the male Baltimore Oriole Allen banded last year as I saw a glint from his leg as he landed on one of the hummingbird feeders - Perky Pet 4 Fountains). Yesterday, a vivid male Rose-breasted Grosbeak fought for room on one of the tube seed feeders in the yard. The topper was today, however, when I saw the first of the season hummingbird flit past the window heading from one of the feeders. I frequently checked all the feeders to see if I could get another glimpse (assume it was a male ruby throated, but it was quite small and wanted to be certain). Sadly, I only got the one quick look. I'm hoping that he will be back in ensuing days and bringing reinforcements. All those stories about hummers riding the backs of Canada Geese were wrong. Obviously, they ride Baltimore Orioles as they both like to feed from the same feeders.
