[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Beaudette Bell's From: Ed Lewandowski <scotchman12year(AT)yahoo.com> Date: 28 Apr 2008 4:57am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Hello Birders, Bell's Vireo, present as of 6:35 this morning. Still present and easily visable along the brush line by the birches as mentioned. Still present when I left at 7:25. Met with Paul Berrimen and he was also able to locate it. Sorry about the spelling Paul. Good amounts of Palm Warblers, Yellow Rumps, and GC Kinglets. Glad to see my little urban park get sub pub for something more than ducks and waterfowl. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] grassland birds From: "Bruce Robertson" <roberba1(AT)msu.edu> Date: 28 Apr 2008 8:45am This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- The Kalamazoo Nature Center Prairie was hot this morning. Surprisingly, the single most abundant species of bird (at least away from the edges) was HENSLOW'S SPARROW (at least 12+ territorial males). One SHORT-EARED OWL flushed and flew a perimeter around the field, scaring the red-wings. SAVANNAH SPARROWS were present, but still moving about in loose flocks and don't appear to be acting territorial yet. Also of note was a single pair of SEDGE WRENS whose male was singing constantly and a male GRASSHOPPER SPARROW that occasionally sang from the field's surprisingly dense center. While the Henslow's territories appear to be relatively small based on the density of singing males, the pair of sedge wrens appear to be defending a rather large territory, perhaps three times the size of a henslow's. WILD TURKEY called frequently from the tree line. My impression is that it is still fairly early for most of the grassland birds, especially the migrants and that breeding won't start for a bit. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] White-crowned sparrows Apr. 26-28 From: eba(AT)umich.edu Date: 28 Apr 2008 9:06am On Saturday late afternoon I saw a pair of white-crowned sparrows in the bushes bordering the entrance path from the parking lot of the Brauer Preserve (on Parker Rd. just south of Scio Church Rd.). Sunday morning a single white-crowned appeared at my feeder, and I have observed it again Sunday evening and this morning sporadically. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net> Date: 28 Apr 2008 9:40am Mike Sefton called to ask me to post the following info. (I hope I've got it all straight). The Bell's Vireo was still being seen at 9:20am today at Beaudette Park in Pontiac. It has been with kinglets in a woods next to the river. Enter Beuadette Park from Orchard Lake Road east of Telegraph. Park in the first dirt parking lot you come to. Cross the road and walk to the river. The birds are in a thicker part of the woods to the left of where you can walk right down to the river. The Bell's Vireo has been singing occasionally. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Dearborn birds From: Julie Craves <jcraves(AT)umd.umich.edu> Date: 28 Apr 2008 10:31am Late additions to the spring arrival list from Saturday, April 26 were Scarlet Tanager (a new early date), a Common Yellowthroat in west Dearborn, and a Wood Thrush in west Dearborn (ties early spring date). Yesterday, Sunday April 27, new arrivals on campus were Gray Catbird, Blue-winged Warbler, Ovenbird, Baltimore Oriole, Yellow-throated and Warbling Vireos, and Cliff Swallow. The first Rose-breasted Grosbeak showed up in our east Dearborn yard. Although this is nice variety, most species occurred in just singles or small numbers. Today I got in my survey route before the rain became steady. I had a similar species mix, and no new arrivals. What I've also found interesting is that very few birds are singing, or singing persistently. Seems that in past years it has been more typical for the first wave of migrants to be much more vocal. -- Julie A. Sunday morning, I saw several white-throated sparrows at that location, along with an oriole & yellow-rumped warblers. On the big hill in the northwest corner of the preserve, I saw a summer tanager. I didn't know what it was, but at home it was easy to pick it out as a "first spring male" in my field guide. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Bell's Vireo - late morning, Monday From: "Bruce M. Bowman" <bbowman99(AT)comcast.net> Date: 28 Apr 2008 2:29pm The Bell's Vireo was still being seen at 11:15-11:45 today at Beaudette Park in Pontiac. It has been with kinglets in scrub close to the river. Enter Beaudette Park from Orchard Lake Road 0.3 miles east of Telegraph. Park in the first dirt parking lot you come to. Cross the road and walk to the river. Walk about two hundred yards left along the river until you come to an "island" of scrub in the grass past some picnic tables. The Bell's Vireo spent a lot of time in that island with some kinglets before they all moved over to the scrub along a birch woods by the river. The Bell's Vireo has singing occasionally. There were about eight birders there when I was there. Look for birders. They're probably on the bird. Bruce ------------------------------------ Bruce M. Although the book is primarily about pet birds, there are several sections about birding and bird rehab in it, including a chapter that takes place at Muskegon Wastewater System. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] White-throated sparrows From: Baba007(AT)aol.com Date: 28 Apr 2008 6:12pm ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I have had a good sized flock of White throateds in my yard these last several days. I'd venture a guess at about 20. The are feeding on the floor of the woods and in the garden, and on the patio! What fun! I don't think I've ever had more than 2 at a time before this. Also had a female Towhee yesterday. Several Chipping sparrows too. I just love spring!! The pair of Carolina wrens still nesting on the front porch. The Cowbirds have been around though...... Barb J.
