As Darlene and the rest of us Oakland County birders know, shorebirds are tough
to come by here. I was at Drayton Plains Nature Center from 7a - 8:30a this
morning and had 2 Solitary SP, 2 L. Yellowlegs and 3 Spotted SP. If you have
never been here, shorebird habitat is about as good as it gets in Oakland
County.

I made a very quick stop at Robert Long Nature Park in Oakland County this
evening and found a lone Dunlin working the shoreline by the picnic pavilion (to
the right after you enter the park).

A northern parula stopped by our deck today. It flew off before I could get my
camera.
This is a first for me. I had to look it up, because I had never seen a blue
warbler around here before.

Subject: [birders] Stealing the Suet... (non-bird, please bear with
me)
From: "Timothy Dey" <dr.dey(AT)deygroup.com>
Date: 4 May 2008 1:04am
My Dad, living in Montague, NJ (upper NW corner of the state) let me know
a couple weeks back that his suet feeder had been stolen by some critter,
and the metal pole supporting the suet cage and various seed feeders
seriously bent over in the middle. All this high up on a second floor wood
deck attached to the back of the house, including a convenient outdoor
staircase as well as sliding glass door access from the house. A local
exterminator offered to trap what was surely some big old raccoon, but
for more than he was willing to pay. He repaired and replaced that which
had been damaged, and began pulling the feeders in at night. This evening
he called to tell me that the suet feeder had gone missing after dusk once
again, but this time, he spotted the culprit. Just feet away from a lower
sliding glass door on the first floor under the deck was a female black
bear, who surely possesses the strength to bend a metal pole down to
suet-licking level with the greatest of ease. A sharp rap on the glass
sent the bear off into the woods. Perhaps he should discontinue the suet
for the time being… he scoffed at my offer to come out and electrify the
metal pole with a high voltage-low amperage static DC charge (no harm to
the birds that way, who don’t touch the ground mat <L.O.L>). I’m open to other
clever ideas…
Good birding,
Timothy

Subject: [birders] Shawnee State Forest & Clear Creek Metropark:
Southern Ohio field trip report
From: Karen Markey <ylime(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 4 May 2008 7:17am
I traveled to Shawnee State Forest near Portsmouth, Ohio (see
http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/forests/shawnee/tabid/5166/Default.aspx)
, and Clear Creek Metropark (see http://www.metroparks.net/ParksClearCreek.aspx)
between Lancaster and Logan, Ohio, all last week.
At Shawnee, I drove paved and gravel roads in the car, getting out to
walk the roads when I heard breeding birds or interesting migrants.
Especially fruitful was driving the road atop the ridges in the
mornings where migrants and breeding birds mixed. I became accustomed
to spotting White-eyed vireo, Blue-winged, Cerulean, Hooded, Worm-
eating, and Kentucky Warblers, Chat, Acadian flycatcher, and Towhees
in the same broad field of view. I always book a woods-view room at
the Shawnee Resort (see http://www.shawneelodgeresort.com/) where I
sat on my deck before dinner, sipping wine and watching Cerulean,
Black-and-white, and Yellow-rumped warblers, Wood thrushes, and Red-
eyed vireos a few feet away. At Shawnee, the highlight was a GOLDEN-
WINGED WARBLER feeding nonchalantly with two Magnolia warbler
companions.
At Clear Creek, I was mostly on foot because walking trails yields
both scenic views and breeding birds with a few migrants. The trip was
spectacular yielding 27 warbler species (I picked up the Prothonotary
warbler at Hoover Reservoir, north of Columbus). At Clear Creek, the
highlight was a CANADA WARBLER singing at the same place on Hemlock
Trail where a pair has been reported for over 40 years. It was a
fantastic trip!
My list follows (minus the usual suspects like starlings and mourning
doves). Many birds I saw at both parks, and if not, I've noted the
park with an S for Shawnee, C for Clear Creek, and H for Hoover
Reservoir.

When I was a boy and seriously hooked on birds, I spent a lot of time
outside looking for them and at them, but I also spent a lot of time in the
evenings just going over and over and over andover my Petersen's. After a
while it all sunk in.

I certainly agree with Jim. There is no substitute for being in the
field, or in fishing parlance, "line time in the water." (Also
applicable is Wayne Gretsky's quote, "You miss 100% of the shots you
don't take.") I'd add to that, you also have to be really patient, and
slow down.
Every year, after posting the various birds seen at UM-Dearborn on a
survey, I get complaints from people who seem to not quite believe me
(or whomever was doing the daily survey) because they couldn't find the
same birds. My survey route is a less than a mile roughly around the
lake on campus. Even when there are only a few birds around, it takes me
nearly an hour. I do a lot of standing, and when I'm moving, I'm going
very slowly.
Finally, rather than miraculous electronic field guides, we might take a
cue from many Europeans or Brits, who don't take a field guide in the
field, but only a notebook. They take copious notes and make sketches,
and work from there to later identify birds. It forces one to really
look at and learn about birds, including behavior and variations in
plumage. It's completely worthwhile to do this even with common birds.
There's always something to learn, if not appreciate.
I've read an account Kenn Kaufman wrote about birding with Rich Stallcup
and some others. Rich was on a bird, which the others looked at briefly
and were then impatient to move on to find "better" birds.
"C'mon, Rich," they said, "You've seen a million American Redstarts."
"Yes," Rich replied, "but I've never seen THIS one."

Subject: [birders] "Warblers of Ohio & Eastern North America" CD and
CD Guidebook from Ohio Division of Wildlife
From: Karen Markey <ylime(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 4 May 2008 12:06pm
At Shawnee State Forest, I stopped at the park office (near the Resort
and Conference Center) to get advice on various trails. The park
office staff member gave me a free Ohio Division of Wildlife (Ohio-
DoW) "Warblers of Ohio & Eastern North American Bird Sounds" CD and a
free "CD Guidebook." The "Bird Sounds" CD features calls and songs of
all 50 warblers including Sutton's and Brewster's, and western
warblers such as Virginia's, Lucy's, Townsend's, etc. The "Guidebook"
contains descriptions, migration maps, colored photos, song
spectograms, and much more for all U.S. Eastern warblers and blurbs
western warblers.
The next time you bird Ohio and visit an Ohio DoW Office, ask for a CD
and guidebook. They are terrific resources. Alternatively, you might
try calling the Ohio DWO at (from an Ohio area code) 1-800-WILDLIFE
(1-800-945-3543) or (from a non-Ohio area code) (614) 265-6300 and
asking how you can get your hands on these resources. In exchange,
consider making a donation to Ohio's Wildlife Diversity Fund (see
http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/tabid/4414/Default.aspx)
because these free resources surpass ones that you can purchase at
most park gift shops. Enjoy!

Subject: [birders] Kent County: Pickerel Lake Birds
From: Bob Tarte <theduckpen(AT)att.net>
Date: 4 May 2008 1:38pm
I saw lots of birds at Pickerel Lake today in eastern Kent County. I'm
not seeing the variety of warblers you're getting in the eastern part of
the state, but it was still a great walk around the lake.
9 Yellow Warblers
5 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers
2 Common Yellowthroats
2 Yellow-rumped Warblers
2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
Warbling Vireo
Palm Warbler
Great-crested Flycatcher
Pileated Woodpecker
And in our own yard in Lowell Township, yesterday the Baltimore Oriole,
Indigo Bunting, and Rose-breasted Grosbeak showed. And this morning I
heard a Warbling Vireo.

Subject: [birders] White-eyed Vireo (2) at Belle Isle
From: Catherine Carroll <songsparrow(AT)wowway.com>
Date: 4 May 2008 3:17pm
Birders,
I took an afternoon walk around the nature trail at Belle Isle this
morning. Two White-eyed Vireos - one singing, one not - were on the
south side of Nashua Trail. I am hoping they're a pair and will nest
in the perfect habitat Belle Isle offers them. When I got back to my
car there was a note from Willie McHale who was able to photograph
the birds. Aside from the usual birds expected to be found, also
present were Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Black and White Warbler,
Nashville Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, Yellow Warbler, Common
Yellowthroat, E. Wood Pewee, Least Flycatcher, Rose-breasted
Grosbeak, Baltimore Orioles and Spotted Sandpipers. Overall pretty
quiet, but very pleasant.

Subject: [birders] weekend backyard birds
From: Diana Dyer <dianagrantdyer(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 4 May 2008 3:49pm
Unexpected backyard sightings yesterday and today in
NE Ann Arbor:
• one male robin chowing down on sunflower and millet
seeds at my platform feeder on several occasions both
yesterday and today
• one male red-breasted nuthatch (I have not seen one
for several weeks)
• oodles and oodles of goldfinches (a couple dozen,
like a little mini-convention, not the 50-60 I had for
a few days this past winter)
• 2 female RWBs, maybe not unexpected but at first I
was hopeful that they were female RB grosbeaks (nope)
• 1 female common redpoll zipping in and out of the
goldfinch crowd (I could not believe my eyes - I made
myself rule out one of those ubiquitous house
finches).
Happy Spring Birding to all!

Subject: [birders] More on Oakland County Shorebirds
From: pavlik(AT)comcast.net
Date: 4 May 2008 10:49pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
On the way to Metrobeach this morning I took some backroads through northern
Oakland County and into Macomb. I found a flooded corn field with a couple
acres of shorebird habitat. Specifically, this is on the north side of Snell
Rd. about 1/4 mile west of the Macomb County line. For reference, this is on
the north side of Stony Creek Metropark. In this flooded area there was a
single Dunlin and two L. Yellowlegs. GPS: 42.7342,-83.110585
Another location I mentioned maybe a year or two ago is in White Lake. There is
an area where it looks like a new neighborhood was intended but there has only
been paved roads for about 3 years and no construction at all. This is off
Eagle Rd. just north of White Lake Rd. GPS: 42.695613,-83.569179 Go to
satellite mode in Google Maps and you can see the flood basin. Today I had one
G. Yellowlegs and three L. Yellowlegs.
Metrobeach was very slow. Lots of noise in the woods but not much in terms of
diversity. I had a Vesper Sparrow in Macomb County at 27 mile and Boughton.
GPS: 42.695613,-83.569179
Take care,
Tom Pavlik

Birders,
I have just updated my map and table of hummingbird arrivals in =
Michigan.
http://www.amazilia.net/MIHummerNet/Data2008.htm
There were 89 reports in April, the most ever, and in the last 4 days =
there have been 75 additional reports. Nearly every southern Lower =
Peninsula county has a report now, and about half the northern Lower =
Peninsula counties. There was an early rush of records in Wisconsin =
along the western shore of Lake Michigan that looked like it would =
produce a lot of April records in the U.P. But, the late April snowstorm =
happened right after the first (April 20) bird was reported in =
Marquette, so there was a 10-day gap until the second U.P. report, and =
so far I have received only three U.P. reports.
Most of these reports are of males. I am also interested in first =
reports of females, so even if you're in the soutnern LP you can still =
contribute by sending me your reports of first females.
Thanks!

When the sky is clear, the migrating birds can see the stars and

in a cloudy or foggy situation, they attempt to use the lights of
buildings, mistaking them for stars. The result is disaster.

Subject: [birders] Brown Park, Ann Arbor
From: "Bob Bethune" <poihths(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 4 May 2008 9:06pm
Pam and I took a few minutes to walk through Brown Park this afternoon just
before dinner. We heard or saw redwing blackbirds, robins, cardinals,
bluejays and up by the blacktop walkway we saw some yellow warblers.
However, we were seriously distracted from the birding by the beautiful
carpets of trillium that are scattered over the whole area of the woods at
the east side of the park. From the lot off Packard, you just take the
walkway over the pedestrian bridge that crosses the creek, and then take the
right-hand fork and follow the trails through the woods. There are hundreds
and hundreds of trillium in many large carpets throughout a 200x200 yard
area.
You may forget that you're birding.
The official name is Marybeth Doyle Park, but all the signs that I saw still
say Brown Park. If you Google "Brown Park, Ann Arbor" the city's webpage for
the park is the second one on the list, and it has a nice PDF map.

Having declined on a very tempting trek to Berrien County this morning with=
a friend, I did some birding along the Ionia Rivertrail. At Dawn, I found=
SORAS (one very open one at that), and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON in the =
Ionia State Game Area on the east end of the rivertrail. Later, in another=
part of the SGA, I found a few RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS and a singing PROTHO=
NOTARY WARBLER. If all that weren't exciting enough, I had a Barred Owl gi=
ve a loud call behind me and as I went to investigate, I was able to find h=
im.
=20
Later, I took my son by bike out to the rivertrail bridge and had another P=
ROTHONOTARY WARBLER singing as well as my first NORTHERN PARULA of the trai=
l.
=20
The woodpecker and the Parula bring my "yardlist" total to 151 species in l=
ess than 2 years!!
=20
I posted a few pictures of today: =20

http://www.grovestreet.com/jsp/picview.jsp?album=3D71650&view=3Ddetail
=20
Also had an American Bittern fly by the house last week.
=20
My friend who did go to Berrien County this morning commented again how God=
has delivered in my request a couple years ago for a place I could walk ou=
t my back door and go spend time with Him in nature. I have had Bald Eagle=
s, Osprey, Merlin, Great Horned Owls, Barred Owls, Common Loons, Blue-winge=
d Teal, breeding Blue-winged Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chats, Prothonotary =
Warblers (likely breeding here this year), and many other birds, all within=
walking distance. What a bananza this place has been!! And it hasn't cos=

Good birding,

Subject: [birders] a good backyard day
From: "Penny" <Jumpthroughhoops(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 4 May 2008 10:24pm
Today was a wonderful birding day for me. I saw a Robin with a worm
dangling from its mouth being chased on foot by a grackle; I saw Robin
parents feeding 3 nestlings in their undersized nest; I saw chickadees
entering and exiting their nestbox with insects and seeds to feed their
nestlings; my first white-crowned sparrow finally showed himself on the
ground looking for seeds and trying to have a shower by the pond; a male
wren, that has been serenading to attract a female to a hanging house,
came down to the ground to hunt for insects in the damp grass right next
to my feet; male orioles frequented my nectar feeders all day; goldfinches
sang nearby and ate from the thistle feeders; one white-breasted nuthatch
and 2 red-breasted nuthatches ate at my suet feeders; a cardinal, and many
other grackles and RWBB's frequented the yard and my pond. All this, and
I didn't even have to leave the yard. It doesn't get any better than
this.

When Mary Beth Doyle ran around this part of
town, she used to drop by regularly to check out
the siding on my house. No typo. She'd park

an array of paint samples to compare to the mint
green siding on my house.
She was a pistol in the very best sense of the word.
