Subject: [birders] Spring Songs; N. harrier
From: Dave Sing <dsing(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 15 May 2008 4:05pm
Howdy. Currently being serenaded by a Purple Finch and a House wren in the
yard; the wren
is the first of the season. Also making a debut is a Pine warbler,
foraging the Arborvitae and
completely ignoring my approach to ~10 feet. The Towhee bunch that set up
shop during the
weekend rain and snow are singing as well, two audible now but as many as 5
singing birds
during Saturday's showers. With the Goldfinches, Robins and Cardinals, the
'wicka'ing
Flickers and the buzzing of remaining Junco, it's quite a Spring fiesta in
this afternoons bright
but still weak sunshine.
Had a most excellent fly-through by a sharp adult male Norther harrier this
morning at dawn,
a new yard bird. The bird swung over the treetops to alight in the marsh,
then orbited the
wetland for about ten minutes before floating off to the Northeast. Wow,
that's a handsome
animal. Cherrios DBS Chelsea MI
P.S;WX: A fine week ahead. Nothing looming save a shower later in the
week. Dewpoints
are divebombing, and should help dry things out nicely through the week.

Subject: [birders] A first at our feeders in Plymouth Twp.
From: "Bob Pennock" <rhp3(AT)wowway.com>
Date: 15 May 2008 8:22am
Yesterday, after dinner, my wife looked out at the feeders and said, "Oh,
look, a bluebird." I ran over, looked at said bird, and my eyes almost
popped out. "That bird is blue but it's not a bluebird," I replied, "It's
an indigo bunting!!!!!" And it was. It sat and ate for about 5 minutes
before flying off to the lilac behind the garage. Now we live just up
from Hines Park so I'm not surprised an indigo bunting would be around,
but in the 6 years we've lived in this house, we've not so much as heard
one let alone seen one in the park. Wow! It was a pleasant surprise.
Question about attracting orioles: We have seen orioles in Hines Park and
even without 1,000 ft. of our house, so this year I put out a nectar
feeder in the hopes of attracting one. I started it off strong but no one
is biting, so to speak. Any ideas as to how to increase my chances of
attracting these beautiful birds? Thank you.

Darlene Friedman called to ask me to post this.
Just before 9:00am today she, Karl Overman, Robert Epstein, and Paul
Berrigan saw four Whooping Cranes fly over north of Bay City State Park
off M-13. The birds were drifting south. These Whooping Cranes are not
countable, but birders might want to keep their eyes open for them
anyway.

We put out oranges for them, and that's quite successful....plus it
has the advantage of also being attractive to red bellied
woodpeckers. We didn't have them for years, but once we got them
coming, they have come back year after year.
Good luck!

it was birdier on campus, with 69 species recorded, including the first

After a cool wet day of birding yesterday, sunny skies greeted birders
Thursday morning. The change in weather also brought in many new birds =
to
the Park, including a very vocal KIRTLAND'S WARBLER. It was observed by
many along the West beach trail south of the half-way stop (south of the
Visitor Centre).
=20
Also drawing excitement were reports of the following:
=20
At the Tip area
At least one adult plumaged Laughing Gull was spotted on the east side =
of
the tip. As for songbirds, Prairie Warbler, Cerulean Warbler, Blackpoll
Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, Clay-coloured Sparrow, White-eyed Vireo, and
Red-headed Woodpecker were most sought after. Overall, a good selection =
of
species was present, many in song. Another Pine Siskin was at the =
Sparrow
Field
=20
Between Tip Tram Loop and Visitor Centre
Two male Hooded Warblers, a male Golden-winged Warbler, Yellow-breasted
Chat and Yellow-throated Vireo were all seen along the main road.
=20
Tilden Woods
A good variety of species were observed. Blackpoll Warbler, Bay-breasted
Warbler, Mourning Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, amongst many =
others
were observed. Also present were lots of Indigo Buntings, several =
Scarlet
Tanagers, Lincoln's Sparrow, White-eyed Vireo on territory and two =
fly-over
Bald Eagles. Nearby, near the turn-off to the West Beach parking area, =
an
Eastern Screech-Owl was discovered. Also close by, an Orange-crowned
Warbler was observed along the Chinquapin Trail.
=20
Schuster Trail
A Philadelphia Vireo and Wilson's Warbler were most noteworthy here. See
note below on Black Vulture.
=20
Woodland Nature Trail
Several Black-billed Cuckoos were observed along the trail.
=20
DeLaurier
An Acadian Flycatcher was reported from the SE part of the trail.
=20
Hillman Marsh
The Mottled Duck continues to be reported from Hillman Marsh. It was
spotted this morning. Also present there were Willet and Little Gull.
=20
Black Vulture
The Black Vulture reported yesterday from the East Beach (north of =
Schuster

Because I've taken the Kirtland's Warbler (KW) tour in Mio several
times over the years and I am a KW census volunteer, I get frequent
email inquiries about KW tours. I'm posting KW tour details now for
your information. Also consult information posted at the U. S. Forest
Service's Huron-Manistee National Forest web site:
http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hmnf/pages/warbwork.htm
. MIO KW tour information is at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/hmnf/pages/warbtours.htm
.
Unfortunately, the web sites for most of the U.S. Forest Service
(USFS) may be down through Memorial Day. If you have specific
questions about KW tours originating from Mio, call the Mio USFS
office at 989-826-3316.
The new U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Station is at 107 McKinley Road.
Driving northbound on MI-33, pass McDonald's, go down the hill and
turn right (east) onto McKinley Road. Turn left into the first
driveway and you'll see the new station tucked into the woods. Go to
the Station at 7 am, pay a small fee ($5), get a short introduction
from a ranger and watch a film about the warbler and USFS efforts to
increase and increase its numbers and save its habitat. Then you get
into your own car and follow the ranger to a place where a male
Kirtland's Warbler is singing. You listen and look and finally see the
bird (most of the time). The tour should be over no later than 10 am,
usually earlier. The USFS Station sells KW t-shirts, postcards, and
novelties so make your purchases before leaving on the tour.
The benefit of taking the tour is that the guide knows where male KWs
are singing and will sometimes let you walk a few steps into the
forest. If you are not on a KW tour, you CANNOT walk into the forest
on your own. KWs nest on the ground so walking into the forest could
jeopardize nesting KWs. The forest is posted, and there are penalties
for trespassing on federal and state forest posted property. If you
are not on a KW tour, you must park on the road and struggle to see
the birds on your own. (I have been 5 feet away from a singing male KW
and could not find it because it was nestled inside a brushy jack pine
tree.
If you don't see a KW at the 7 am Mio tour, some folks drive to
GRAYLING for the late-morning tour that starts at the Holiday Inn.
I've not taken the Grayling tour but it is a possibility in the event
that your Mio tour is unsatisfactory. Information on Grayling tours is
up and working on the web at
http://www.fws.gov/midwest/EastLansing/documents/tour.html)
To drive to Grayling, drive back into Mio and head westbound on MI-72
(or get yourself onto MI-72 heading westbound). The Holiday Inn is on
the strip that parallels I-75 at 2650 S. Business Loop, Grayling, MI,
phone:
989-348-7611. Call the Holiday Inn for exact location information.
If you go on a weekday KW tour, the more likely you are to join a
small, manageable group of birders. One year, I was the ONLY person on
the tour. The ranger and I endured an incredible thunderstorm and my
reward was five stunning singing KWs viewed through the ranger's
scope. What a treat!
I have stayed at the Mio Motel, phone 989-826-3248 on MI-33, 415 N.
Morenci Road. One night's stay is usually between $65 and $75. It is a
very nice motel, clean, small refrigerator, microwave, leather couch
even!, cable television with The Weather Channel and more, etc. A
medium-sized Glenn's grocery store is adjacent the Mio Motel in case
you need food or supplies. A nice diner is right across the street in
case you need a meal; I believe the diner opens at 6:30 am which may
not give you enough time to meet your 7 am tour. (Other motels are the
Holiday Motor Inn, 989-826-3743, and the AuSable Valley Motel,
989-826-1737, which is relatively new and has a pool.)
Mio is not the world's dining capital so be prepared for diner- and
pizza-type restaurant choices. Personally I am willing to drive about
20 miles toward Lewiston to dine at my favorite Rustic Inn (3163 No.
Red Oak Rd., Lewiston, MI 49756, 989-786-4790) for salad bar, fish
(always excellent), steaks, and a fully-stocked bar -- drive north on
MI-33, turn left (west) onto F-32/MI-68, Miller Road, turn right
(north) onto MI-489, and look for the Rustic Inn on the left (west)
side of the road about 5 to 6 miles ahead. Alternatively, drive the
full 25 miles into Lewiston and eat lakeside at Lewiston Lodge (1525
Fleming Road, Lewiston, MI 49756, 989-786-5261). At either, you will
have a wonderful meal for a fraction of the cost of what you'd pay in
Ann Arbor.
2007 was my fifth year as a census volunteer. I heard 43 Kirtlands,
saw 12. The 2007 census counted 1,697 singing male KWs, the highest
total yet, and the 7th straight year the total exceeded 1,000. (I will
post a diary of my 2008 KW census experiences on our BIRDERS email
list later in June.) If you are really interested in saving this
special Michigan bird, please consider volunteering for the KW census.
You should be willing to devote 4 to 7 days to the census during the
second week in June for the next four or five years and fund your stay
up north (I deduct expenses from my taxes). If you are interested,
send me your questions, and I'll pass your name on the USFS biologists.
Enjoy your trip to see the Kirtland's Warbler!

Subject: [birders] Dunlin, drive-up Bobolinks, GH Owl chick - Ann
Arbor - Thu., May 15
From: Mike Sefton <mseft(AT)yahoo.com>

Birders,
The Ann Arbor Landfill had the following goodies at noon today:
7 Lesser Yellowlegs
12 Least Sandpipers
3 Dunlin
2 Killdeer
A monstro, fuzzy Great Horned Owl chick was bobbing and weaving in the old
Red-tailed Hawk nest in the woods on the right before you reach the big pond.
The hawks built a new nest 20 yards east of the old one. As always, if you go
to see the landfill birds, check in with the landfill staff at the scales at the
MRF building on the east side of the big pond.
Lazy birders can enjoy drive-up courting Bobolinks in Lillie Park just south
of the landfill. As you leave the Platt Rd. entrance to the landfill, head
south and take the first left into Lillie Park. At least six Bobolinks and a
number of Savannah Sparrows are on territory in the unmown fields on either side
of this entry road that ends in a turning circle. Hope the Pittsfield Township
parks folks can be persuaded to refrain from mowing until at least July 10 to
give this declining species a chance to raise a brood.

At about noon today, I found a pair of LEAST SANDPIPERS in Mary Beth =
Doyle Park near the main dam that diverts flow into the holding basin. =
I also watched a SPOTTED SANDPIPER foraging along the shore somewhat =
upstream of the dam and the small island. About a dozen MALLARDS were =
on that section of Malletts Creek, along with a single female HOODED =
MERGANSER. I counted five muddy painted turtles sunning themselves near =
the dam and the island.
Unhappily, two new, gray and white, domestic geese have appeared in the =
same section of the creek and sat on the island, preening.
In the holding basin section were another dozen or so MALLARDS, a pair =
of CANADA GEESE with four goslings, a GREAT BLUE HERON, and several =
KILLDEER.
The woods to the east of the holding basin are still full of blossoming =
wildflowers. Vast patches of trilliums are still blooming, although =
many have entered the pink phase prior to dropping petals. There are =
also large numbers of wild geranium and violets (several varieties). =
Jack-in-the-pulpits lined parts of the path. Note that the path was =
quite muddy in places today after yesterday's rainfall. I heard, but =
did not visually locate, vireos, red-bellied woodpecker, great crested =
flycatcher, and warblers in the woods.
A pair of WOOD DUCKS flew out of the vernal pond in the woods near the =
bridge from the Packard Road entrance. And recent deer tracks decorated =
sections of the path.
Note that Mary Beth Doyle Park is located in Ann Arbor south of Packard =
Road and west of Platt Road. The new, paved parking lot at the end of =
Birch Hollow (off Stone School Road, near the I-94 bridge) was padlocked =
shut. I assume that will change after the official re-dedication of the =
park on June 1. Access is still available from the dirt parking lot on =
Packard Road as well as from other locations without parking facilities.

We are still looking/hoping for volunteers to adopt Nightjar Survey routes
in many areas across the country. The first survey window takes place June
10-June 26. There is still plenty of time to think about adopting a vacant
route and assist the program.
The Nightjar Survey Network relies on volunteer participation by
conservation-minded citizens, biologists, and other like-minded groups to
adopt and conduct survey routes. Nightjar Surveys are easy to perform and
will not take more than two hours to complete. Volunteers conduct roadside
counts at night, during specific time windows when the moon is > 50 %
illuminated, by driving and stopping at 10 points along a predetermined
9-mile route. At each point, the observer counts all Nightjars seen or
heard by species during a 6-minute period. No artificial broadcasts of the
species' calls are used. Please visit the United States Nightjar Survey
Website for more details including location of routes, instructions, and
results; www.ccb-wm.org/nightjars.htm
Volunteer participation is important to provide information on nightjars in
your state and the broader region. Please consider adopting a route.

Subject: [birders] MiBCI wants to hear from you!
From: "Karen Cleveland" <clevelak(AT)michigan.gov>
Date: 15 May 2008 4:50pm
The Michigan Bird Conservation Intiative (MiBCI) has already
started planning its 2009 Ornithological Congress, and the
planning committee is looking for input. Just go to
http://www.MiBCI.org and look for the "We want to hear from you!"
link for a short survey that will be used by the committee
as they plan.
The Ornithological Congress is an annual meeting for the state's
conservation community to share information on current research
and conservation of Michigan's birds. Prior congresses have
included sessions on topics ranging from wildlife disease and
alternative energy development to early successional forest
management as well as short presentations on ongoing research
and habitat conservation projects.
Attendees at each congress are asked for their suggestions for
future congresses, and this is your opportunity to have a say
as well. The success of the congress depends on it being useful
to as many of the state's conservation partners as possible, so
please take just a few minutes to let MiBCI know how it can
better provide a forum to share information, meet potential
collaborators, and generate excitement and action for bird
conservation. Feel free to forward this request to anyone you
know interested in Michigan's birds and their conservation.

Late this afternoon, I found 21 Short-billed Dowitchers in breeding
plumage at the retention ponds at Fairlane Green shopping center. First
they were at the pond near Panera Bread, and later they moved to the
largest, middle pond next to the Target. There were also five Least
Sandpipers.
These ponds are closest to the Fairlane Green entrance off of Oakwood

All I know about oracles is from studying Aeschylus' Agamemnon. If the
vultures flew from the spear-hand side of the palace, regarding Meijers as
the palace, the omen is good. Otherwise, bad.
If they kill and eat a pregnant hare, that's good for the short term, bad
for the long-term. Expect a good departure, but then bad winds at Aulis and
the necessity to sacrifice your daughter to Artemis. Just thought that might
be useful information.

Fact: The night before last I watched a turkey vulture ride fairly low on
weak thermals all around the front of Jackson Rd. Meijers. S/he sectioned
the parking areas, carefully scrutinizing each one, then would start over.
She was there when I came out and still working after I finally got all the
groceries in the car and drove off.
Fact: Mejers has begun stocking lots of food from China (canned mushrooms,
canned applesauce, apple juice (Motts)).
Coincidence?

Hello birders,
The evening rain was there but the majority of warblers has trimmed down.
Magnolia is added making it 15 over the past week.
Also added yesterday were Yellow-Throated Vireo, Great Crested Flycatcher.
Happy birding

It's like our primary votes in the Democratic presidential primary -- the
rules committee doesn't allow it! Probably because they're too early, just
like our primary. Wait a few years, & if they're still hanging around,
maybe they'll let us count them if we've been _really_ good (i.e.
contributed lots of money to their cause).
