[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Re: egg shell, unknown species From: ddarm(AT)umich.edu Date: 7 Jul 2009 2:17pm I would guess Spotted Sandpiper. And it's just a guess but it is the right size and habitat and general appearance. I've found them along Douglas Lake and at the landfill here in Ann Arbor. Pretty sure it isn't Piping Plover which would have smaller spots. Dea Quoting "Bruce M. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Owl retraction and help needed. From: "linda ar" <birdar101(AT)hotmail.com> Date: 7 Jul 2009 7:56pm ok OK I give, so I don't know my owls as well as I thought I might. I concede that these may have been Saw-whet owls but they looked to be at least 10-12 inches tall and all the same size. I have included a picture link at Picasa, because it is very dark and I had not planned on posting it but with all this hoopla I am interested in what you all have to say about it. I listened to my Stokes calls as well as others last night and the only call that sounded remotely like the ones going on between all of these owls was the short-eared. With that, please take a look and see if you can make out what this owl is. It may very well be an adult, in which case they would have all been adults because they were all the same size. I could not see any downy feathers on this one (not sure if any of the others had downy or not). If they were all adult Saw-whets, what were they all doing together, making these sort of cooing buzzing sounds and following each other from branch to branch? Thanks for all the information and especially D.S. for your gentle and kind decorum, Linda Ar You may have to cut and paste: http://picasaweb.google.com/LindaJeanineAr/WhatOwlIsThat?feat=directlink --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. I'm also finding it difficult to think they were Saw-whet Owls. I had a look at your photo, but you really can't tell from it. What about Eastern Screech? [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] nesting killdeer From: Sherri Smith <grackle(AT)umich.edu> Date: 7 Jul 2009 8:54pm I keep a horse at a local boarding stable. Last week when I was riding in our out door arena (coarse sand) I saw a killdeer hanging around the same place consistently. Finally she sat down in a hollow place made by a horse print and atayed there a while. When she got up, there was an egg! When I finished my ride, I got traffic cones to mark and protect the nest. Unlike all the other nests I've seen, this one was carefully made. The entire surface of it was covered with very small flat rocks, so the egg didn't actually touch the sand. Well, something went wrong with that nest, but yesterday when I was riding, the same thing happened in a different place. Again I actually saw her lay the egg. I moved the traffic cone, and this nest was even better than last week's and included tiny flat pieces of wood. Because it is vital that all the babies hatch simultaneously so they can all go off together, the mother can't sett on the eggs until she lays the last one. i hope she is luckier with this nest, i think i'll take out a tomato cage tomorrow. All of this is near the corner of Textile and Dell Roads, south west of Ann Arbor.
