Subject: [birders] Debut of the Kensington Chicks 7-8-09
From: Coolsweetjoy(AT)aol.com
Date: 9 Jul 2009 10:55am
Greetings Birders ~
Yesterday I returned to Kensington Park to follow up on the Osprey chicks.
They are really growing fast! Mom went out to grab them a bite to eat and
I was able to capture the following pics.

I also saw a lot more cedar waxwings yesterday than the week before.

The sandhill cranes weren't around the trail yesterday.

Subject: [birders] Cedar Waxwings and Dragonflies
From: David Allen <whiteoakart(AT)att.net>
Date: 9 Jul 2009 8:14am
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
Unfortunately I have no photos, but I wanted to share my joy with this. Last
Friday, my family went on a little canoe trip on the River Raisin. Normally, we
start at the Fellows Bridge on Sharon Hollow and pull out in downtown
Manchester at the Dairy Queen. This time we were having so much fun, we decided
to portage over the dam and continue through to the Manchester Library at the
old Ford plant mill.
The mill pond is a lot bigger than I realized and home to a lot of birds.
But the highlight was watching the cedar waxwings. They were hunting
dragonflies. It was really spectacular as both species are great fliers and the
dragonflies are big enough to watch from a distance. It was reminiscent of a
WWI aerial dogfight. There were loop-de-loops, barrel rolls, quick turns, dives
that took them right to the surface of the water. Sometimes the dragonflies
got away. Sometimes the waxwings got dinner. Occasionally, a dragonfly would
ditch a waxwing only to have another zip in and get it.
We must have floated there in our canoe watching for half an hour.

For a normally elusive bird, I have had good opportunities to have long loo=
ks at Brown Thrashers. Twice I enjoyed the bird water bathing in a small, =
intermittent stream that runs off of the back of our house along a Bur Oak =
woodland. Then yesterday I watched a thrasher dust bathe in the sand from =
a ground mole "push up" that brought the sand up to the surface. In all ob=
servations there was extensive preening before the subjects returned to the=
ir quiet habitats.=0A=0ABioBob

Subject: [birders] Re: Off topic: Can mosquitoes bite frogs? Yes
From: "Larry D. =?iso-8859-1?b?Tm9vZOlu?=" <ldnum(AT)umich.edu>

I have not seen an answer to this, so I will try.
Yes, some mosquitoes can feed on amphibs. In fact some species
specialize in amphibs., but I do not remember which species from my
mosquito inspection days long ago.

I received a reliable report of a Fish Crow at the Michigan Audubon Baker
Sanctuary, just north of the manager's residence. Anyone interested is
chasing this one down? I was there the other day and it sure sounds like a
Fish Crow but I could not get a visual. It has been hanging out with other
crows. Park across from the manager's residence at the Meadow and Marshland
Trailhead parking area.
The Baker Sanctuary is just down the road from a landfill, I understand that
another Fish Crow was sighted in SW Michigan at a landfill, too!

Subject: [birders] Dickcissels persist, Luckhardt Rd, Washtenaw Co.,
7/9
From: "Dan Sparks-Jackson" <sparksjackson(AT)aol.com>
Date: 9 Jul 2009 3:34pm
At least two Dickcissels were still singing this afternoon from the north
side of Luckhardt Road, within 0.4 mile east of Schneider Road. Both
individuals were singing from the utility lines that run well north of
Luckhardt Road. This is ~150 yards north of their original haunts. I'd
assume that the hay harvest in the field to the south side of Luckhardt
didn't suit their preferences.

Andy -
Thanks so much!!! Besides being hilarious, I actually learned several
birding tips!
What fun! Highly recommended!

Subject: [birders] Holland heron update - chapter closed
From: "Robert Setzer" <doctorbass(AT)comcast.net>

Heron Dateline 2009-07-09:
Judy and I went to see "the kids" at Holland Ponds yesterday. On the main
oldest tree ("Junior's tree"), only one kid of the original sixteen
remained. We only saw a total in all nests of three herons in our brief
"look-see" - mosquitoes were horrible! I doubt we will brave the mosquitoes
and go look at the heron nesting sites more than perhaps once more to
photograph the empty nests. I think this "chapter" is closed.
This has really been an amazing chapter in our lives!!! I checked my
original birder e-mails and found that I first posted pics on March 21, 2009
shortly after I joined the birders list and learned about this amazing site.
The stick-bringing, nest-building action had already started before that.
I hope you have enjoyed my sharing as much as we did in "living it". Empty
trees, fill a fork in the tree with sticks, make love, make babies, feed
babies & teens, old teens eat, stretch, and flap, then leave home, empty
nests. and this for elegant large wading birds in the tops of trees exposed
to the elements (late snow, rain, lighting, wind, sun.) Whew!!! And, all of
this in March, April, May, June, barely July. Yes, the "kids" do grow up
fast!!!
Of note yesterday for other birds, we also saw/shot pics of two "pods" (one
with 4, one with 3) of newly fledged Tree Swallows sitting on wires picking
themselves - they were "busy" and unafraid. At least one Bluebird box (by
Waterfowl Pond) still had a female feeding the contents, so we hope to see
"coming events".
Our friendly "cats" were present in six places - making like the closest
thing I have heard in Michigan to mockingbirds, and sometimes including the
characteristic "meow". Yes, these are "our cats" (i.e., Gray Catbirds) -
they "talk to us" and they are unafraid! I never realized they were so
abundant.
I took a few more decent pics of the Blue Gray Gnatcatcher (a "really cool
dinky bird"!). It is very busy and does not sit long - lucky pics!
No pics posted yet- just an update.
I have so much more to do to eventually prepare a photo album for this
wonderful "story" of "our heron families" this year! Also, working with Rob
Golda (Hiking Michigan), I think we will eventually have a video production
to post on the Shadbush Nature Center (Shelby Twp) site after next winter's
"homebound months" while we work on our heron photographic captures this
year. Separately, I am putting my Holland ponds pics on PBase.
It is so wonderful that Shelby Twp. (Shadbush Nature Center) appreciates the
importance of this amazing ecological preserve and is dedicated to
preserving and supporting it!

We are sad to see "the kids" leave, but we will often return to "our special
place" at Holland Ponds to observe and photograph the other abundant
wildlife available to us on each trip. Every trip is special! As we say: ".
you never know."!
Thanks for your feedback and interest! (Hey! With your help and
encouragement we are continually observing and learning!)
