Subject: [birders] Great blue heron (Oakwoods city park, NE Ann
Arbor) | My RBNs
From: Karen Markey <ylime(AT)umich.edu>
Date: 2 Dec 2009 9:28am
A great blue heron has lingered at the wetlands at the far north end
of Oakwoods city park on Ann Arbor's northeast side for about 1 1/2
weeks now (the park is just west of the Green Rd. curve that makes the
usually north-south Green into east-west).
I heard a Towhee calling in the brush at Thurston Pond about a week ago.
My 2 Red-breasted nuthatches fetch peanuts from the peanut feeder at
regular intervals. During this balmy weather, they don't show up much
during the day but at first light and dusk they hit the peanut feeder
every 45 seconds or so. (I've seen a total of 3 RBNs a one time in the
conifers in my neighborhood.)

Subject: [birders] Monroe Christmas Bird Count - Saturday, December
19, 2009

Birders,
This year's Monroe CBC will be held on Saturday the 19th of December. I'm
looking for help with area coverage. If interested, please contact me
off-line.
A map of the count circle and additional information can be found on my CBC
Blog:
http://jerryjourdan3.blogspot.com/2007/11/monroe-mi-mimo-count-circle.html
Below is a condensed summary from last year's statewide count:
Jerry Jourdan
______
109th Christmas Bird Count =96 December 14, 2008 to January 5, 2009
The following summary comes courtesy of Glenn Palmgren and Adam Byrne
(American Birds, Vol. 63, 2008-2009, pp. 74-75):
The 65 area counts in Michigan were a new record high in the state. A tota=
l
of 144 species (plus one count week species) were reported. Total
individuals were just shy of 650,000. There were 1062 field observers in
508 parties, plus 351 feeder counters. Forty counts reported nocturnal
surveys (my Screech Owl photo made the report!).
Once again, Rockwood CBC led the species total for the state (93). The
Monroe CBC finished with 80 species and 95,144 birds (most in the state),
including a whopping 56,000 European Starlings. One new species was added
to the cumulative CBC list this season: an Orange-crowned Warbler found on
the Marquette CBC.
The story of this year=92s CBC was unquestionably the invasion of White-win=
ged
Crossbills into the state (42 counts reporting). Besides the Orange-crowne=
d
Warbler (Marquette CBC) a Pine Warbler (AuTrain CBC), Eurasian-collared Dov=
e
(Traverse City CBC), Vesper Sparrow (Anchor Bay CBC), Rose-breasted Grosbea=
k
(Traverse City CBC), and Yellow-headed Blackbird (Anchor Bay CBC). Bald
Eagles (525) set a record high in the state, with the Monroe CBC reporting
202 birds. Thirty-four Tree Swallows found at Rockwood this season
shattered the record of 15 (2005-2006).
This year=92s Monroe CBC will be held Saturday, December 19, 2009

Thanks to Rodney and Nora, the last two people to come out to the count, on
the cold and slow last day.
Thanks to everyone else who came out during the rest of the season. More
of a final write up about the season later, on the message board.

Only 1 migratory raptor went by in the afternoon. The last count bird of
the season was a Red-tailed Hawk. A few Bald Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks
that did not migrate also were around.
Non-raptor Observations:
A few flocks of Tundra Swans could either be heard or seen going by.

This morning, 2 Dec, Faye Stoner and I were at the Sharon Mills West, County
Park and saw three Pileated Woodpeckers fly across the river. They were too
far away to determine adult vs. juvenile.
This property is adjacent to Nature Conservancy's Nan Weston Preserve at
Sharon Hollow.

Wednesday morning 12/2 I found two lovely Fox Sparrows at Nichol's Arboretu=

The other best birds I found were a Hermit Thrush and two Brown Creepers.
