I spent about an hour at Long park this morning, and I was rewarded with=0D
decent waterfowl with a crisp sun at my back: Pintail, Green-winged=0D
Teal, shoveler and Gadwall were mixed among the hundreds of Mallards in=0D
the open pond near the parking lot (this stays open all winter). More=0D
than 200 gulls sat on the ice off the picnic shelter near the parking=0D
lot, but I saw only Ring-billeds and Herrings.=0D
A few Hooded Mergansers floated in the lake that is mostly ice covered=0D
at the west end of the park.=0D

Subject: [birders] Rufous Hummingbird - Flushing, Genesee Co.
From: "Allen T. Chartier" <amazilia1(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 6 Dec 2009 1:17pm
Birders,
An adult female Rufous Hummingbird (field identifiable IF she spreads her
tail) has been coming to Karen Bennett's feeders in Flushing, Genesee
County. The bird has apparently been present since late September but was
only brought to my attention a couple days ago. Birders are welcome to come
to try and see the bird, but are asked to knock on the door first to let
them know you're there (if anyone is home). Both Mr. and Mrs. Bennett work
full time and are often away, but it is OK to view the bird if nobody is
home. Walk around the left side of the house to view the feeder on the deck
at the back of the house. Do not approach too closely. The bird has
apparently been skittish since its arrival.
The address is 5194 Applewood Dr., Flushing, MI 48433. From I-75/US-23 take
the Pierson Road exit in Flint. Go west about 1/2 mile to Linden Road. Turn
right and go about 1/2 mile to Kelly Road. Turn left and go about 4 miles
(the name of the road changes after 2 miles to Coutant Street, and the speed
limit decreases) to McKinley Road. Turn right and go about 3/4 mile to
Spy-Del Drive. Turn right and go a short distance to Apple Blossom Lane.
Turn right and go a short distance to Applewood Drive. Turn left and to to
the second driveway on the right.
Please respect the homeowners property and privacy (and please try not to
block their driveway or the street) by viewing the bird only under the
conditions described above.

Subject: [birders] Re: Eagle vs crow
From: "Penny" <Jumpthroughhoops(AT)yahoo.com>
Date: 6 Dec 2009 2:27pm
While in Los Angeles in November, I witnessed a similar happening but with
a different outcome. I was visiting Beverly Hills, looking out on the
balcony, when I saw a very large hawk, too far away to identify with the
sun behind him, being followed and buzzed by a crow, quite high in the
air. As the hawk kept circling, looking for prey, it ignored the crow,
until, one at a time, 3 more crows began circling and dive-bombing the
hawk. After several minutes, the hawk tired of the crows and began a slow
trajectory toward downtown, all the while circling small areas in its
search for prey. The crows didn't stop their harrassment even when the
hawk was quite far away from its original starting point, and finally, the
hawk and the crows all faded away in the distance. I don't know if the
crows had been nesting in the area, or if they just didn't like the hawk
visiting their territory. It was quite an entertaining sight.

Subject: [birders] Oakland County Shrike
From: Parula100(AT)aol.com
Date: 6 Dec 2009 3:18pm
----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION----
I had a brief look at a Shrike, presumably Northern, at the Novi Wetlands
Reclamation area in Oakland County at noon today. No sooner had I spotted it
at the top of a bare tree than it flew off to the west, and by the time I
jumped out of my car it had disappeared. I don't know if it dropped down
into the marsh or if it left the area entirely. I returned an hour later in
hopes of refinding it, but failed.
To find this area, proceed north on West Park Drive from 12 Mile Road to
the first light, which is West Road. Turn right onto West Road. The Shrike
was near the end of this short, dead-end road on the south side of the road.

Subject: [birders] birding software
From: "Richard Neubig" <rneubig(AT)med.umich.edu>
Date: 6 Dec 2009 8:21pm
Hi all,
I know that this has been discussed on numerous occasions but after having my
old computer die, I am thinking about moving away from the Wildlife Recorder
software to some other software for keeping track of bird sightings. I travel
out of the country a fair amount so I'd need a program that has world lists.
What are your thoughts on AviSys, Lanius Excalibur, others?
If you send messages to me privately, I will summarize and post the summary to
the list.
Thanks!
