[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Re: birding software From: pavlik(AT)comcast.net Date: 7 Dec 2009 2:45am ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Rick, Yep - this subject comes up about once a year but always worth a discussion. I think AviSys is probably the most widely used. I have a copy including the world "add-on" and I use this as my primary listing program for state, country and world listing. I have two primary problems with AviSys. I still don't think that entry of sightings is very quick. If I go out birding in two counties on a day in May and see maybe 50 species in each county it can take me 10+ minutes to enter those sightings, especially if I want to make sure I include a specific location like a park within a county. I've also run into a recent program error. Another big issue is there is no import feature. You cannot upload or import any data from anywhere so if you want to get AviSys updated with your sightings you need to manually entered them. The reporting features are very good though and quick. Birder's Diary offers a 30 day trial run which I did recently. I didn't much care for it and ran into a few program errors. The screens are way too busy and complex for just simple entries. I've never used Bird Base which is another popular one. Someone did a review on Surfbirds comparing some of the software packages. The information is a little dated because they are reviewing some older versions but it gives an objective opinion. http://www.surfbirds.com/Features/SoftwareReview/WhichSoftware.html Frankly, I think $150 on average to get a package that allows for world listing is expensive. I'm surprised there hasn't been a recent entry into this market at a much more cost effective price. Bottom line - I think AviSys is still a good program and fairly easy to use if you don't need to manually add a bunch of old sightings. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Re: birding software From: Wayne Fisher <waynef(AT)provide.net> Date: 7 Dec 2009 4:14am I also use Avisys, and am generally happy with it. I think it does a good job of having the power to support complicated listing, without being too complicated for those who keep fewer lists. It does include a world list, using the Clements list, but it does not have range information outside North America. There is an add-on available that has world range information. The English names are the Clements ones, so if the names used in some other country differ, you may need to use the Latin names to find something. I remeber trying to find the bird that the British call Woodpigeon. Clements has it as Common Wood-Pigeon, so no English search worked. And then there is the confusion that for Latin names, other bird books may be based on a species list other than Clements. Do any of the programs do a good job of importing lists from other programs? I'm afraid that the different programs store different information, which makes importing quite difficult. If the "from" program does not have some information that the new program depends on, then imported data would be incomplete. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] birding software From: James Fox <93fox(AT)earthlink.net> Date: 7 Dec 2009 9:54am I use ebird to keep track of my lists. Ebird is free and will automatically generate month, year, county, state, continent, ABA area, ABA area ticks, and world lists from the checklists you submit. It also shows top 100 lists for counties, states, and the ABA area so you can see how you compare with other eBirders. The main problem I have with eBird is that you can't indicate different counties on the same checklist. For example, when submitting one checklist for Kensington, you cannot mark which birds were seen in Oakland County and which birds were seen in Livingston county. The only other problems I can think of are that it doesn't cover the whole world (just the Americas, Antarctica, and NZ), and it would probably be time consuming to input old records. However, it is supposed to expand to cover the rest of the world soon and they do have some software to upload data from some birding programs as well as from spreadsheets. While it probably isn't as good as the birding software you have to pay for there is the added benefit that your records are being used to keep track of bird populations. If you want to know more about ebird you can visit ebird.org and click on the About eBird tab. --- * birders FAQ - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html * photo sharing site - http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/se_mich/photos.html * To unsubscribe from birders(AT)umich.edu send a blank message to lyris(AT)listserver.itd.umich.edu with UNSUBSCRIBE BIRDERS as the Subject line. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] update, Snowy Owl, Selfridge ANG/AFB, Macomb county. From: "Russell Emmons" <birdeland(AT)pasty.net> Date: 7 Dec 2009 9:49pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Our daughter Alice stationed at Selfridge says the Snowy Owl is still = there and insists on returning to the flight line! The base enviromental = office is keeping watch of it and trying to keep it and the planes safe! = It often happily hunts mice under the left over mown grass clippings. = She can see it from her office door. Pics she has got, not very good = but if & when she gets decent ones they will have to be cleared, = permission etc. to be released. More later Russ Emmons, Casco Twp.
