To: jaxbirds(AT)umich.edu
Hi all,
This was the last count for Greater Sandhill Cranes at Haehnle
Sanctuary for the year 2009. We had 27 cranes that Monday, there are
still around 2000 cranes west of sanctuary, on the SMP property. Mud
Lake Marsh is frozen over, so the waterfowl that we had been seeing in
good numbers have gone to the deep water lakes of the surrounding
area. One notable sighting was a Northern Goshawk sitting across the
marsh on a dead tree. Second time this fall and may be the same bird
seen earlier.
Have a safe and happy holiday season,
Gary Siegrist

For some reason, Michigan just isn't that well represented on ebird.
I have attached lists of the top counties based on checklists
submitted for both Michigan and Wisconsin below. Note the huge
difference in numbers between the states. I don't really see any
reason why Michigan's and Wisconsin's checklist totals shouldn't be
about the same. Once a state has a lot of users like Wisconsin it can
have it's own regional portal and flickr group. In southeastern
Michigan Macomb has the least coverage, the most checklists any one
person has submitted there for this year is 14. The next least
covered counties are Livingston and Washtenaw. Oakland County is
pretty well covered, eight people have submitted over 50 checklists
this year. Another cool feature that ebird has is a map showing all
reports of rare birds in the US on ebird. You can access it near the
bottom of the ebird home page.

For the first time that I can remember I had three bluebirds at my
feeder today. Sadly this isn't even close to the Feeder Watch time
for this period.
Hope they come back.

James is right=2C ebird is loaded with fantastic features and it would be g=
reat to see the Michigan numbers start to compete.
It would be awesome if everyone on this list started recording their Birdin=
g data on ebird. Not only is it fun to see your personal and state stats bu=
ild up=2C but I've found this to be a very valuable tool in planning an out=
ing. The bar charts are great. You can pull up bar charts for the whole st=
ate or any county=2C then scroll down and see what species are expected tha=
t particular time of the year (the annual bar chart is divided into four ba=
rs per month) giving resolution down to the week). Then you can right click=
on any species to open the map view in a separate window. The map shows a =
bullet point for every location that bird has been sighted. The Yellow poin=
ts are in the past 30 days.=20
Aside from chasing a bird posted on this list=2C it is the most reliable wa=
y I've found to improve the odds of finding targeted species.
The more data that gets put in there the more valuable it becomes!
Give it a try.

Today, thursday, a man called the Washtenaw Audubon Society wanting to
know what the mysterious goldfinch like bird at his feeder is. It is
red all around the beak and seems to be a European Goldfinch. It's OK
to go try to see this bird, which has been around for a couple of
weeks, but call first. Calvin Messing 734 428-0598. He is at 8991
Neal Road near Manchester.
