To use email addresses replace '(AT)' with '@'.
This is done to confuse the spam 'bots.

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Re: ebird From: "Chris Goulart" <miherp(AT)comcast.net> Date: 11 Dec 2009 12:29am This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- I would also like to endorse e-bird as a solid, multifaceted tool. = Given that it is a free service with such a significant amount of = functionality, you really can't go wrong. I probably use e-bird every = couple of days, at a minimum. It is great for planning trips, checking = out hotspots that you may want to visit, and running reports to see if = your sighting of a yellow warbler in December in Michigan is even = possible. =20 It is probably worth noting that Macomb County is the smallest county by = geographic area at only 480 Square Miles. The habitat is generally = urban and farm country. The only birdable areas in the county are the = St. Clair Lakeshore (Metrobeach Metropark), the upland farm county = (Wetzel State Recreation Area) or the small areas of woods in the = Northwestern part of the county (River Bend Parks etc...). Much of the = county is in private lands and with the moving of hay that often occurs = early in the year many of the grassland species that may occur typically = are driven out by mid-June. =20 This makes for some very challenging birding. Many users of e-bird will = only list sightings if they have a new life bird, year bird, or county = bird. =20 Personally, I bird in Macomb County probably at least two to three times = a month but may not record my sightings each time. I have registered 13 = checklists in Macomb county this year and have seen 126 species this = year. These are not very impressive numbers, but again, given the = county's demographics they are solid enough. Thanks Chris Goulart ----- Original Message -----=20 From: James Fox=20 To: birders(AT)umich.edu=20 Sent: Thursday, December 10, 2009 4:54 PM Subject: [birders] ebird For some reason, Michigan just isn't that well represented on ebird. = I have attached lists of the top counties based on checklists submitted = for both Michigan and Wisconsin below. Note the huge difference in = numbers between the states. I don't really see any reason why = Michigan's and Wisconsin's checklist totals shouldn't be about the same. = Once a state has a lot of users like Wisconsin it can have it's own = regional portal and flickr group. In southeastern Michigan Macomb has = the least coverage, the most checklists any one person has submitted = there for this year is 14. The next least covered counties are = Livingston and Washtenaw. Oakland County is pretty well covered, eight = people have submitted over 50 checklists this year. Another cool = feature that ebird has is a map showing all reports of rare birds in the = US on ebird. You can access it near the bottom of the ebird home page. The following is from the FAQ. http://www.umich.edu/~bbowman/birds/birders_FAQ.html VIRUS WARNINGS (HOAXES) Please DO NOT post warnings to birders(AT)umich.edu about computer viruses. We all from time to time receive email warnings from friends about computer viruses. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Re: iPhone bird song application needed From: ddarm(AT)umich.edu Date: 11 Dec 2009 6:35pm Dear Heidi and other birders, I still think the best way to learn bird song is to listen over and over again to a good recording starting out with the Birding By Ear CD sets and then moving on to the Stokes sets. You can put both of these on your Iphone via Itunes and if you have an adapter you can "play" your Iphone in your car. You can also put your phone on speaker and listen as well. Another quick but unsatisfying tool would be IBird Pro. It has very short portions of songs for North American species BUT does not even come close to covering the fine points that you'll learn by listening to the Birding By Ear series and the Stokes group. I LOVE this application for the information and photos that it provides and the song snippets, too. But it isn't good enough to learn bird song (at least for me). The size is just right, though! A $30 download_ one of the pricier ones. I do not know if there is a "Shazam-like" application that can listen to the bird's song and then identify it, but I bet someone is trying to figure out how to do that. Lots of problems to take care of first, I bet . (Shazam is an application that can listen to a song playing on a radio and then identify it. After it identifies it, you can purchase it from the itunes store.) I'll be interested to see what others have to say. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: [birders] Re: iPhone bird song application needed From: "Allen T. Chartier" <amazilia1(AT)comcast.net> Date: 11 Dec 2009 7:31pm This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Heidi, It isn't for the iPhone, as far as I know, but the National Geographic = field guide along with songs is available for a PDA (some phones will = accept the card). But the problem with any collection of bird songs is = the variation geographically and individually even within the same = species, not to mention that there are often multiple calls as well, so = getting a "match" is often difficult. I recently purchased an iPhone and am = interested in a birding app for it that will let me play a birdsong in = the field, to compare it to what I'm hearing. I've searched a little for = such an app, but would appreciate any recommendations from the wealth of = expertise on this list. Thank you.
