I have noted that a number of birders have said that they like to use=0D
Ebird to find certain species in a new area. Well, good luck with that.=0D
The problem I find with Ebird is with the integrity of the sightings.=0D
Just like with all parts of the Internet, we find this=0D
"good-news-bad-news" situation: The good news is that anyone can publish=0D
anything on Ebird; the bad news is that anyone can publish anything on=0D
Ebird. =0D
I have researched that program for Oakland County, a specialty of mine,=0D
and found way too many incredible sightings: Red-necked Grebe at=0D
Heritage Park, 5 Snowy Egrets in a small backyard pond in subdivision of=0D
Farmington Hills, etc.=0D
Yes, the state has "editors" who question certain sightings; yes, the=0D
program allows for notes and documentation for unusual sightings, but=0D
one is left with the impression of "take the sightings with the=0D
proverbial grain of salt." I have found that this program offers nothing=0D
to me that my own data doesn't offer.=0D
I suppose we can all ignore the outliers, but if a birder uses this list=0D
to find species in a certain area, disappointment may be in store. For=0D
me, nothing beats researching the habitat and habits of a bird, finding=0D
the proper habitat and proper place on the calendar, and getting out and=0D
digging up the bird. It is a little more "work," but birding has never=0D
been "work" for me. This whole chasing-a-posted-bird syndrome - whether=0D
on a list service or on Ebird - has created a new species of birder: the=0D
Net Vulture.=0D

If anyone is need of a soporific, I did a podcast about visiting St.

on the name of my show, "What Were You Thinking?" You'll see the

Thank you for all the thoughtful input! I have indeed been learning
birdsongs over the last couple of years, and am able to recognize many more
birds than before, but sometimes just want something in the field. I
certainly have the information now to know what applications to employ for
various purposes. The input from such well-informed experienced birders has
been very helpful for me.

I found this a very interesting "ramble" (and y'all know I tend to ramble
and like rambles). It is a verbal ramble so it was weird looking at a
computer screen "listening to the radio", but I soon found out that once I
had "fired it up", I could continue working on other stuff.
I suggest you go direct to the referenced ramble and not mess around on the
website:
http://www.markiac.addr.com/PET_LIFE_RADIO/WWYT_player44.htm
Fans of Garrison's Lake Woebegone will enjoy. Complete with a commercial
break ala Woebegone. I found it an interesting account of what recently
happened on the pier where people gathered to see the Murrelet.
As a pic-oriented person, it was nice to return to "yesteryears" - although
it took awhile to "switch gears" from my original expectation! I also
learned a lot more about birding! Interesting!
All told, it is about a half hour radio show in length maybe.
Thanks, Bob Tarte!

Ebird is online and does not need an Iphone to be used. The idea of fan
Iphone app for Ebird is great, but Ebird can be accessed anytime at
http://ebird.org/content/ebird/.
My view on the "Good news bad news" situation: I don't use Ebird to find
rare birds. I rely on this list for my Life Birds. After I lost my life list
on paper, I switched to using Ebird just to track life birds. I do enjoy the
"Top Ebirders" function.

Ebird is online and does not need an Iphone to be used. The idea of fan Iph=
one app for Ebird is great, but Ebird can be accessed anytime at <a href=3D=

<br></div><div>My view on the "Good news bad news" situation: I d=
on't use Ebird to find rare birds. I rely on this list for my Life Bird=
s. After I lost my life list on paper, I switched to using Ebird just to tr=
ack life birds. I do enjoy the "Top Ebirders" function.</div>

Thank you for all the thoughtful input! =A0I have indeed been learning<br>
birdsongs over the last couple of years, and am able to recognize many more=
<br>
birds than before, but sometimes just want something in the field. =A0I<br>
certainly have the information now to know what applications to employ for<=

various purposes. =A0The input from such well-informed experienced birders =

been very helpful for me.<br>
