Russ,
Please forgive the [often] Washtenaw County-centric flavor of the birders@umich
list. I think we often forget (but should not) that many birders in the whole
state of Michigan read and post to the "birders" list.
Joy Road and Gleaner is in Washtenaw County. The area is included in the Ann
Arbor CBC circle and is where a N. Shrike was found on Saturday for the AA CBC.
The mockingbird, apparently, will be added as a bird seen count week.
Hope this is helpful.

I think it depends on the species. Chickadees use feeders in winter
but I don't think they are at all dependent on them. their range
extended well north of Michigan before the advent of feeders. On the
other hand, cardinals and titmice may be more dependent. Their range
has only extended north recently and while it may be at least partly for
reasons other than feeders, it sure is a strong coincidence that they
range expansion coincided with increases in the human population and
with the addition of feeders.

=09
How much do birds depend on feeders to survive the winter? I
know that the conventional wisdom is that they have plenty of natural
food, and aren't dependent on feeders, but what is that based on? How do
we know?
=09
During the CBC, we find lots of birds near feeders. There are
many areas of good natural habitat away from feeders that seem almost
empty. That would imply that the feeder birds are getting a significant
portion of their food from feeders.
=09
There are a number of feeder birds that are expanding their
range northward - ie Cardinal and Tufted Titmouse. Is this evidence that
feeders make it easier for them to survive the winter?

Interesting point on Flickers John. I had one come around
yesterday and check-out a nest cavity for a minute or so. The sunlight
was showing vivid yellow through his wings as he struggled to maintain
grip/balance at the cavity entrance. I don't think I've ever seen a
Flicker around here before in the "dead" of winter. Certainly they have
never frequented my seeds or suet to date. I do like them a lot but
nesting attempts here have thus-far been thwarted by marauding European
Starlings. I had an active Flicker nest a few years ago with four eggs
in it and the Starlings invaded and threw the eggs out. Flickers have a
tough time reproducing in many areas now and I'm not sure how their
overall numbers are trending. Fred in Warren

Birders,
Clark (my nephew) and I covered the central zone (of seven) for the
Highland Christmas Bird Count yesterday. We recorded 38 species
throughout the day, and our best birds were actually found by Lyle and
Sean who snuck into our territory for some poaching. I'm glad they did!
Notable sightings.
Red Fox - hunting in a marsh - when it saw us from about 100 yards away
it ran off, delighting us with its light, bouncy gait. Cooper's Hawks -
Four, including three adults perched, affording great closeup views.
Horned Grebe - Six(!) on Lake Chemung, found by Lyle Hamilton and Sean
Bachman. Eastern Bluebird - 12 in a flock - always a joy to see a big
flock of these! Flickers - 6, which seemed like a lot, especially since
we noted only one Red-bellied Woodpecker. I'll be interested to see if
there were that many flickers throughout SE Michigan.
We had no Purple Finches, and in a quick survey with some other parties
after the count, I don't recall any others. Of course, this morning
there were three at our home feeder - so they are around.
Lake Chemung has a large number of waterfowl right now. Among the 1000
Mallards there are Canvasbacks, Ring-necks, Goldeneye, Bufflehead,
Hooded Merg and some others.
Looking forward to hearing what was seen in Washtenaw County.

Howdy folks,
I spent about an hour watching birds at French's Landing at the Huron Rive=
r dam on Edison Lake last night. In that time I had a nice mix of sighting=
s including:
Chen=A0Goose species- 1 one very small Ross's type Goose flew past me in=
a flock of Canada's. It wasn't a Snow Goose, but in the brief time I obse=
rved it, there was no way to determine if there was any sign of hybrid int=
rogression.
Cackling Goose- 1=A0
Bald Eagle- 1
melanistic Herring Gull- 1 A bird I have never seen before. I have seen He=
rring Gulls soot stained before, but due the evenness of the darkness of=
the plumage and the relatively decent shape of the feathers, I believe th=
is bird was melanistic rather than stained.
Lesser Black-backed Gull- 1 1st cycle, well studied at close range- very=
nice!
Great Black-backed Gull- 3 Always surprising the range of variation of siz=
e in this species- not all are hulking beasts!
Carolina Wren- 1 always a hoot for a northerner...
Yellow-rumped Warbler- 2 in the spruces along the landing
Lapland Longspur- 1 calling fly-over
Good birding

Yesterday was a gold star backyard birding day for me. There is a pair of
red-tailed hawks in the field behind my house that have a couple of favorite
perching spots that I check out every morning from my kitchen window as I
prepare my daily tea ration. Sunday morning there was one of the pair
perched in its usual spot. But with a difference.there was a much larger
object sitting in the same tree just under the red-tailed. Now, I have been
fooled before by "avian plastic baggus" so I grabbed my binoculars to get a
closer view. GASP! It is a beautiful adult bald eagle sitting in the tree
below the red-tailed. It sat there for a good ten minutes before gliding
off. Magnificent! And what an opportunity to observe the size difference
between the two.

I have a possible interesting bird. A friend of mine who lives on
Delhi Ct (road that parallels the river at Delhi). is certain she saw
a brown-headed nuthatch. While she is not a super active birder, she
does know birds fairly well. It is worth getting the word out about
tis possible rarity!
Happy birding.

I just posted a 22-second video on YouTube of my wife's African grey
Parrot, Dusty, wishing you a Merry Christmas (and congratulating
himself for being "an awfully good boy" at the end.)
His voice sounds so much like mine, it's frightening. But that's Dusty
talking, not me. (You can hear the avian accent.)

circle sits in the northwest corner of Jackson County and extends east into
Washtenaw County and north slightly into Ingham County. The count recorded 56
species which is just a bit lower then the last 10 year average, but nearly
average over the 41 year history of the count.
Highlights were a single Wilson's Snipe at the Leoni Mill Pond along Michigan
Avenue, 2 Trumpeter Swans and a female Bufflehead at Portage Lake
State Park. Thirteen Tundra Swans and one Hermit Thrush were found on the
count.
Light snow fell throughout most of the day and most of the field birders felt
that the bird activity was low. However, our count of 9322 individuals was above
average. No record high or low numbers were reached, but a few species were
notably higher than average - Red-tailed Hawk (55), Downy Woodpecker(93), Hairy
Woodpecker(17), Black-capped Chickadee(358), Brown Creeper(6), European
Starling(2229), Snow Bunting(200). Cedar Waxwing(46) and American Tree
Sparrow(291) were both recorded in below average numbers.
Noteworthy misses for the day were Belted Kingfisher and Swamp Sparrow.
The 2010 Waterloo Count will be held on Saturday, December 18th.
Thanks for all of your help.

I've gotten a call from someone from out of town who would like to
join a bird count not too far from Ann Arbor if he can find one after
the 22nd. If you know of one, please let me know, and give me
contact information for it.
