Subject: Bea Guyett

My story about Bea and the fork-tailed flycatcher happened after I had been
out to see it and then saw her at the pool where she was having physical
therapy. I congratulated Bea and made sure her therapist knew that she was
working with a famous person. But Bea couldn't remember my name and that
night e-mailed her apologies. My response was: "Bea for a Vemonter who can
name a fork-tailed flycatcher, it's OK to miss a person's name." Who now
will recognize and name a fork-tail if it shows up again? Any of us, thanks
to Bea, but it won't be the same. I will miss her.

Subject: Champlain Valley -- 1/5/02

Five Barrow's Goldeneyes and five Bald Eagles were among highlights from
the Champlain Valley Saturday.
Larry Hills, Sherry Mahady, Ted Murin and I noticed four Barrow's Goldeneye
(two drakes and two hens) among Common Goldeneye at Shelburne Bay. The
Tundra Swans were there. So was a drake Northern Pintail among the more
common species. The waterfowl was nice and close to shore at Shelburne Bay
Saturday.
A drake Wood Duck lingered at Charlotte Town Beach (a late date for that
species).
The five eagles (3 adults, 1 second-year, and 1 third-year) were seen from
Long Point in Ferrisburgh.
A Red-throated Loon (sort of a late date) was at Button Bay.
A fifth Barrow's Goldeneye was at Oven Bay (Tri-Town Water Plant) in
Addison. Also notable there were three Long-tailed Ducks and three
White-winged Scoters, late dates for both species.
And seven Gadwall and a lone Northern Pintail were among a large
Mallard-American Black Duck flock at Chimney Point, south of which the lake
is frozen.
Common Loons and Horned Grebes were sprinkled about the lake. Red-tailed
and Rough-legged Hawks, too. We noticed a flock of about 320 Snow Buntings
in a tree in Ferrisburgh (I think we were in Ferrisburgh), and good numbers
of Common Redpolls and American Tree Sparrows here and there. Lots of
American Robins around, too.
I'll try to post more details about Champlain Valley birds on the "Breaking
Bird News" link at my web site (www.VermontBirdTours.com) by Sunday evening.
Ta-ta,
Bryan Pfeiffer
