I had an interesting encounter on the VINS preserve this morning. A lone
male
Evening Grosbeak (decidedly uncommon in these parts this winter) was calling
persistently from the top of a tall sugar maple. Suddenly it was answered
by a
Northern Flicker, most likely the same bird I saw and heard here on 4 Jan,
though not since. The two countercalled back and forth for 3-4 minutes from
about 100 yards away before the flicker flew off at my approach. Hard to know
what was being communicated in that exchange!
