Hi: I'm new to vtbird and I'm relatively new to the area. I've been having
a tough time attracting birds to our Wallingford home. I've had a few
chickadees, and occasional nuthatch and the odd bluejay, but there are many
fewer birds than I used to get up in the Champlain Valley. Any thoughts on
where the birds are?

I'm in Proctor, so not quite southern VT and on the other side of the mts.
But my experience around my feeders and feeding area this year is similar.
No juncos until just a week or so ago, now about five show up regularly.
Nice to see them-- I love juncos.
I've seen only ONE goldfinch, which surprised me because I don't think I've
ever seen just one at a time before. And no purple finches at all. Last
year we had scads of finches.
Fewer jays than usual too, though no shortage of chickadees or redpolls.
Two pair of titmice throughout the day. We've only had two pair of
cardinals-- last year we had nearly a dozen all the time.
At first I thought maybe different summer weather making different feeding
conditions, and different winter conditions doing same, with more food
exposed in the wild, keeping birds from feeders. But on the occasions I
have managed to get out, I have been surprised at the lack of bird life.
I'm still learning about Vermont patterns, though, so maybe this is part of
a larger pattern I can't see because I haven't been here long enough.
I'd love to hear any ideas about that from you expert Vermont birders!

Bruce, Your aren't the only one getting few feeder birds here in S.
VT.. It has been the case here is E. Dorset too.
A reminder... please put something bird related in the subject line when
you are using VTBIRD. With the proliferation of viruses out there that
attach themselves to email, I am reluctant to open anything that I am not
'expecting' .

NO Juncos or finches at all although we did have our first night visit
of a big, graying racoon last night. I suppose it's good that something
is interested in the birdfood! This warm weather is not much to my
liking for a winter!

Hello, Vermont Birders --
Just catching up on VTBIRD posts and was interested to see that mine
isn't the only feeder bereft of birds. A few B-C Chickadees show up
once in a while; a pair of Tufted Titmouse (-mice?) hover in a nearby
tree but don't come to get food; a W-B Nuthatch feeds occasionally. And
some days no birds come at all. The flock of 10-15 House Finches that
frequented my condo complex for the 9 years I've lived here are
gone--not a sign of even one of them this year.
As Dayle Ann said, there don't seem to be many birds anywhere. Today I
drove from Essex Jct. to Crown Point and back, mostly on back roads.
Other than an occasional flock of Starlings, I seldom saw birds flying
across the road, in nearby trees, or in the grass/gravel at the edge of
the road. There were few if any birds around feeders at houses along
the way, and hardly any non-water birds at the lake accesses where I
stopped and got out of the car. And I was
looking--hard--everywhere--all day! :-) It was almost eerie.
Although I didn't see even a single Blue Jay all day, I saw 9 Eastern
Bluebirds--6 at Crown Point and 3 at the Shelburne Bay boat access.
According to the Audubon CBC report, this is only the 3rd year that
bluebirds have been reported on the Burlington count. Then there's the
high number of Bald Eagles being reported (I saw 3 today, at place I
haven't seen any before)...
Yes, it's a very strange year.

A northern shrike was seen near Benson VT today (1/26/02)in a field NE of
the intersection of 22A with the turnoff for Benson. This is about 1 mile
south of the intersection of 22A and 144. The shrike was perching on top of
brush piles in the field.
