[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: Sudden rabbit death From: "william gilbert" <wagwag(AT)sprintmail.com> Date: 30 Jan 2002 10:14am This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ----INCLUDING text/plain MIME SECTION---- Two rabbits departed south burlington last night. The crime scene = indicates a large bird of some sort. The attacker struck at night and = decapitated one victem after trying to fly off with it (based on snow = prints) it across some 50 to 75 feet. In the past I have seen Great = Horned Owls chew up the head of a prey, a goose. None have been sighted = here however. In any event the rabbits were large and so it was a big = bird. This was no sparrow! wag ----DELETED text/html MIME SECTION----

Just one headless rabbit = that time. Not sure if it was a Great Horned Owl or not, but it was our = best guess at the time, based on known birds in the area, wing prints, = and tracks. [ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: FW: snowy owl From: Wayne Scott <wsscottnh(AT)earthlink.net> Date: 30 Jan 2002 3:26pm ------ Forwarded Message From: "McCarty, Dotty" <mccarty(AT)jaguar.middlebury.edu> Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2002 13:35:16 -0500 To: "'wsscottnh(AT)earthlink.net'" <wsscottnh(AT)earthlink.net> Subject: snowy owl Hi, Wayne! I have another snowy to report. This one is in Ferrisburgh in the fields in the area of 1301 Walker Road. From Route 7, drive west on Little Chicago Road a couple of miles, then turn south on Walker Road. Drive past a large farm, then you'll see a tiny white house on the right and a green house ahead on the left (this is 1301). Set up your scope anywhere between the white house and the green house and check all fence posts across the field to the east and the two large trees behind the green house. Judging by the amount of dark on the back feathers, this is a first year bird. I understand the people who live in the green house have been seeing it for some time. Cheers, Dotty McCarty ------ End of Forwarded Message

[ << | >> | ^^ ] Subject: IMPORTANT NOTICE: VTBIRD IS MOVING! From: Robert Johnson <johnsonr(AT)sover.net> Date: 30 Jan 2002 9:09pm Dear VTBIRD list subscribers: VTBIRD is moving to a new address. Management of the VTBIRD List will be moving to the School of Natural Resources at UVM, and the new list manager will be Ernie Buford. You may contact him at <ebuford(AT)zoo.uvm.edu>. In order to continue your membership to VTBIRD, please follow Ernie's directions or go to the new VTBIRD web page below. To subscribe, send email to listserv(AT)list.uvm.edu with the text "SUBSCRIBE VTBIRD firstname lastname" as the first line of your message. Substitute your own first and last names! Do not include a subject line or any other text in the message body. [Notice: unlike the old VTBIRD, you do not enter your command in the subject heading. It goes in the body of the email.] You may also go to web page below where you will find information on how to subscribe as well as information for using the list. <http://www.uvm.edu/~ebuford/vtbird.html> And, you may unsubscribe from the old VTBIRD list by sending the message UNSUBSCRIBE [placed in the subject heading] to <VTBIRD(AT)Raven.csc.vsc.edu>. The old address will remain open until February 17 for stragglers only. Any bird postings sent to the old address will not be posted to the group. Instead, the sender will get a message notifying him or her of the new address. After Feb. 17, the old VTBIRD list will be shut down. It has been a real pleasure to see this list thrive, and I want to thank you all for making it such a fine resource for our state. We have been very fortunate to have a great group of people, committed to treating one another with respect and courtesy. I certainly got what I wanted: a Vermont bird discussion group, and I am delighted that Ernie has come forward to continue it. Thanks to Prof. Bob Gershon of the Castleton State College Communications Department who provided the technical knowledge for this list and has kept it running smoothly. If you have any problems, email me. Otherwise, I will see you all on the new list. Regards, Bob Johnson Professor of Philosophy Castleton State College Robert.Johnson(AT)castleton.edu
