Subject: CT Report 09/03/2008
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 3 Sep 2008 9:16pm
Note: I went back a few days - probably farther than made sense - but
not as far back as to cover all the days the daily report was
suspended.
From Kris Johnson, Luke Tiller and NHBC group:
9/03 - West Haven, Sandy Point -- RED KNOT, DICKCISSEL. The
Dickcissel was at the overgrown entrance to the beach.
From Janet Mehmel:
9/03 - Guilford yard -- 7:55PM a WHIP-POOR-WILL started calling in my
back yard. A VERY unexpected addition to the yard list!
From Frank Gallo:
9/02 - Norwalk -- The young White Ibis was still at 14-acre pond until
6:47 p.m. when it flew east and out of sight, probably to roost as it
was already quite dark at the pond.
From Neil Currie and Tom Hook:
9/02 - New Milford, Garlordsville, Mud Pond -- Juvenile Common Moorhen
continues in the southeast corner of open water.
From Peter DeGennaro:
9/02 - Naugatuck, Naugatuck Industrial Park -- 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT
eating Pokeweed berries in the low brush of the field.
From Hank Golet:
9/02 - Old Lyme, Griswold Pt -- 3 WHIMBREL, PEREGRINE FALCON.
Great Island beach -- 1 AMERICAN PIPIT
From Lori & Ed Kurlowicz:
9/02 - Coventry yard -- 5-7:00 PM, 3-4 Red-breasted Nuthatches
exhibiting flycatcher behavior.
From Paul Cianfaglione:
9/02 - Rocky Hill, Rocky Hill Meadows -- 1 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER.
8/31 - Windsor Locks, Bradley International Airport -- 1 UPLAND
SANDPIPER (feeding near the fence along Perimeter Road).
From Frank Mantlik:
9/02 - Stratford, Stratford, Access Rd. pool -- 7:30 am, 1 Blue-winged
Teal.
Salt marshes near airport and from Long Beach -- 6 Yellow-crowned
Night-Herons, 1 Boat-tailed Grackle.
From Angela Dimmitt:
9/01 - New Milford, Gaylordsville, Mud Pond -- juvenile COMMON
MOORHEN, southern end of open pond.
From Frank Mantlik (with 3 friends):
9/01 - Westport, Sherwood Is. S.P. -- 1 Swainson's thrush.
Stratford, Stratford Marina -- 1 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (adult in basic
plumage).
Stratford, Access Rd pool -- 4 Blue-winged Teal.
From John and Anders Ogren:
9/01 - Old Saybrook, Plum Bank Marsh - WHIMBREL (seen about 150 yards
in from town beach), 5-6 im. LITTLE BLUE HERON, 6 SALT MARSH SPARROWS.
From Mardi & Towny Dickinson:
8/31 - Norwalk, Allen Rd, 14-Acre Pond -- 6:30AM Juvenile WHITE IBIS
continues. Viewed behind Senior Center.
8/31 - Madison, Hammonasset SP -- 2:50-4:05PM 1 juvenile Buff-breasted
Sandpiper seen & photographed at West Beach in the field opposite pond
from the rotary. Very Tame! 1 Adult Little Blue Heron at East End
parking lot pond.
8/31 - Norwalk Yard -- 6:45PM 100 Common Nighthawks.
From Julian Hough, et al:
8/31 - Madison, Hammonassett State Park -- 2 juv. BUFF-BREASTED
SANDPIPERS in the field opposite the Swan Pond from 7:00am-7:30am when
they flew off and couldn't be relocated.
1 juv. BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER and a flock(!) of 4 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS
(briefly, before the Baird's flew off west) in the East Beach Parking
lot from 8:00am-10:00am.
From Paul Desjardins and Mona Cavallero:
8/31 - Madison, Hammonasset State Park -- 1 Buff breasted Sandpiper in
east beach parking lot 2 PM.
From Jim and Carol Zipp:
8/30 - Hamden yard on the Cheshire line -- Estimated 500 COMMON
NIGHTHAWKS, but could have been far more than that between 6:45 and
7:30. Note, while others have been noting the lower numbers of Common
Nighthawks than usual, I've had my usual passage of a dozen or two
here and there each evening since the 20th or so. When I have a big
night, it's most often between the 28th and 31st of the month and they
were right on schedule. There could have been far more than 500 but
at some point they began milling around reminiscent of Broad-winged
Hawks when kettling but not the peeling off that Paul Carrier noted
recently and I could no longer tell when or if new birds were present.
This to me is one of the real wonders of nature that occurs every year
during such a relatively small window of time.
From Frank Mantlik, with wife Linda and Jalna Jaeger:
8/30 - Norwalk, 14-Acre Pond, as viewed from behind Senior Center on
Allen Rd. -- Juvenile WHITE IBIS continues 5pm, actively feeding.
