Subject: creating a virtual museum of bird art on WICN
From: "Mark Lynch" <moa.lynch(AT)verizon.net>
Date: 21 Nov 2008 11:26am
ON-LINE AT WICN (www.wicn.org) NOW:
Imagine a unique and beautiful museum of art and science combined that
featured works from around the world that depicted birds and described their
cultural and scientific importance. DARRYL WHEYE, artist and writer, and
DONALD KENNEDY, Editor in Chief Emeritus of the journal Science, have
created just such an institution in their stunning new book HUMANS, NATURE
AND BIRDS: SCIENCE ART FROM CAVE WALLS TO COMPUTER SCREENS and it’s related
website. Tune in tonight and learn why a trip to your local art museum can
also teach you a lot about biology, ecology and ornithology.

Subject: 2 Palm Warbler - Gloucester near Elks Club
11/21/08
From: Phil Brown <nebirdsplus(AT)comcast.net>
Date: 21 Nov 2008 11:30am
Forwarded for Jennifer Rycenga:
I am a visiting birder from California. I was out this morning looking
for the King Eider, which I did not find. However, I had a pair of PALM
WARBLERS just after the little cove north of the Elks club - I thought
this strange and worth mentioning to someone. Although, I suppose that
in a year when Cave Swallows are being sighted in November, a pair of
Palm Warblers may be expected! Nothing else unusual - I'll post my
sightings on eBird. Thanks for passing this on, if it seems newsworthy
to you.

During my lunchtime run around Chestnut Hill Reservoir I had a Nashville Warbler
feeding and bathing with a small flock of Chickadees. It was located on the
north side of the res, at the end of the eastern-most bay, around a
crescent-shaped puddle on the outside of the running track.

Greetings birders,
One Cackling Goose amidst a tight pack of 700 or so Canada Geese on the Umass
Amherst Campus pond late this afternoon. Looks like the same individual from
last Sunday. Around 4pm the vast majority of geese including the Cackler
departed, probably towards feeding areas in Hadley. Here's a few pics of the
Cackling Goose

Also today, a small 'wave' of Golden-crowned Kinglets passing through numerous
yards and woods in the Amherst area.
Good birding,

For those who are following news of White-fronted Geese in Concord,
they have moved out of the School Street fields in Acton and onto the
Prison farm fields on the north side of the Rt 2 rotary. I saw both
birds there very close to Barrett's Mill Road on Tuesday, and the
Greenland-type there on Wednesday and today (Friday). I've also posted
photos and a summary of why I think one is a Greenland White-front at

Subject: Snowy owl present in Duxbury
From: Cheshta Buckley <cheshta(AT)cape.com>
Date: 21 Nov 2008 6:14pm
The Snowy Owl continues to be at Duxbury beach this morning at
10.30am . It was clearly visible resting on the beach and later flying
over the marsh area, near the end of Gurnet Road that runs south and
parallel to the ocean. It is very wary and I could not approach closer
than 200 yards or so.
Also present were Gannets, Surf and Black scoter, Common Eider,
Mergansers and flocks of Junkos.
This is one amazing bird to see, especially in the clear sunshine.

Subject: CT Report 11/21/2008 CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD
From: Roy Harvey <rmharvey(AT)snet.net>
Date: 21 Nov 2008 10:48pm
Note: Please refer to last night's message for directions to the Calliope
Hummingbird.
From Steve Broker:
11/21 - Simsbury -- CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD observed from 3:45 P.M. to 4:18 P.M..
The hummingbird was either at the feeder or perched in the nearby American Beech
tree throughout observations. (Description of this late afternoon,
sun-catching perch site written in the homeowners' guest book.) At 4:18 P.M.,
it flew directly from the hummingbird feeder toward the front of the house and
out of sight. Further suggestions on driving directions: (1) Climax Road is a
time-saving short cut from Route 44 west to Route 167; (2) left on Laddie Lane
(south of August Road) leads directly to August Road and #15. Bring bird seed.
From Don Morgan:
11/21 - Simsbury -- Calliope Hummingbird present until at least 12:30 PM. It's
around pretty much all the time, looking for sunny spots when its cold, and not
apparently very much bothered by human presence, which makes for great looks
at the bird.
From Jamie Meyers:
11/21 - Sinsbury -- Calliope Hummingbird. I was there from about 10:40 through
11:10 and it was actively buzzing around the yard of the homeowner. It
frequently landed in low shrubbery on both sides of their yard and went into the
feeder to drink several times. Looks like it might be a young male. Even
though there was a lot of birder activity, the hummer did not appear to be
stressed by all the attention, binoculars and long lenses. The homeowners' son
was there and he was very nice.
From Jack Barclay:
11/21 - Ashford (Westford) -- possible BREWER'S BLACKBIRD has been observed
close (~25') at hand, occasionally using a mixed feeds feeder or perched on
sugar maple or paper birch branches, off and on since Sun.16 Nov.'08. Today
(Fri., 21 Nov.) it was joined 8:30 a.m. by at least 6 bronzed grackles (adult
males). The Brewer's fits published descriptions with bright yellow eye,
shorter heavier black bill than the grackles, a glossy dark blue iridescence on
head and tail, smaller than the grackles but larger than redwings or cowbirds,
and a soft dark brown tinge (not bronze) to the back and wing midsection. The
somewhat spatulate tail is not as long, nor trough shaped, as the grackles'. It
has been observed at close range in bright sun a number of times this week, but
not when I had a camera to use. It appears to be rather sedate and in good
health. I will try to secure photos since I see there are no photographic or
specimen records on Brewers in CT given in Zeranski and Baptist (CT Birds
1990:279). I observed Brewer's on
numerous occasions in Oklahoma and Colorado years ago.
Editor's note: This bird is a great find for CT and the prospect of one being
confirmed and photographed is exciting.
From Greg Hanisek:
11/21 - New Haven, East Shore Park -- at least 20 CAVE SWALLOWS, perched on east
side of brick activated sludge building and hawking in front of it. Also 1
WILSON'S WARBLER.
From Phil Asprelli:
11/21 - Wallingford, Williams Farm, 995 E Center St, about 100yds east of Rt
I-91 -- At 11:00am, the Barnacle Goose. The farm has 2 silver silos. Parking
may be a problem. I parked on a side street and walked back to the field.
From Mardi Dickinson:
11/21 - Westport, Compo Beach -- 4:10-4:25PM SNOWY OWL flew from the direction
of Saugatuck Shores on to the jetty near Cannons, then flew towards the Norwalk
Island area.
Norwalk(?), Calfs Pasture Beach -- sure enough, SNOWY OWL on the familiar Jetty
at 4:40 till dark and flew off. Upon further looks at Compo and Calfs Pasture,
it appears to be the same bird as I observed on 11/3 at Compo Beach and then its
stay at Calfs Pasture area for the duration.
From Susan Thomsen:
11/21 - Compo Beach, Westport -- From about 8:15 to 9 this morning I saw the
SNOWY OWL on the jetty near the cannons at Compo. Thanks so much for the alert!
Also Snow Buntings near the kayaks. 12:20: Went back to check for the Snowy
didn't see it.
From Tina Green via Sara Zagorski:
11/21 - Westport, Compo Beach -- SNOWY OWL on the jetty by the Cannons at 7:25
am.
From Jerry Connolly:
11/21 - Madison, Hammonasset SP -- WINTER WREN, FOX SPARROW (singing).
From Frances DAmico:
11/21 - Wallingford, McKenzie Reservoir -- Barbara Carlson, Paul Lehman and Fran
D'Amico relocated the BARNACLE GOOSE, BRANT, CACKLING GOOSE, and GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at McKenzie Reservoir between 7 and 8 AM.
11/21 - Simsbury -- Barbara Carlson and Paul Lehman reported that the CALLIOPE
HUMMINGBIRD survived the night.
From Frank Mantlik:
11/21 - Westport, near RR station -- 6:35 am, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, one atop west
RR tower; the other flying nearby with large bird prey (mourning dove?).
Compo Beach -- 1 pm, 130 SNOW BUNTINGS.
I've also been checking the Westport sewage plant occasionally for the past 10
days or so. I've seen no swallows there at all.
From Brian Kleinman:
11/21 - East Granby, backyard - FOX SPARROW at feeder along with an "Oregon
type" junco.
From Mike Warner:
11/21 - Westport, Compo Beach -- 11:00 am., 120 Snow Buntings.
From Chris Malin:
11/21 - Old Saybrook, yard -- 1 WILSONS SNIPE.
From Roy Zartarian:
11/21 - Newington, yard - 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS; m, f, and imm.
From Bev Propen:
11/21 - Orange yard -- 1 FEMALE PURPLE FINCH on sunflower chip feeder.
From Meredith Sampson:
11/21 - Old Greenwich, Greenwich Point -- 10 SNOW BUNTINGS, 4 FOX SPARROWS.
From Peter DeGennaro:
11/21 - Naugatuck yard - 1 late YELLOW-THROATED VIREO singing and eating
insects from an ash tree.
From Dave Rosgen:
11/21 - Winchester, 121 Laurel Way (Rosgen Wildlife Sanctuary) -- 9 Purple
Finches.
Litchfield, White Hall Rd. (White Memorial's Museum Feeders) -- 1 Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker, 2 Fox Sparrows, 3 Purple Finches.
From Dave Rosgen, w/ John Eykelhoff:
11/21 - Litchfield, (Bantam Lake's Pt. Folly) -- 2 female Northern Pintails, 2
Lesser Scaup.
From Leona LeJeune:
11/20 - Winsted, Williams Ave., near the Gilbert School -- 5 PINE GROSBEAKS
feeding in a Crabapple tree, 1 COMMON REDPOLL at a bird feeder.
From Angel DeFurio:
11/20 - Vernon Backyard -- female Northern Goshawk seen in branch above brush
pile. Bird was very large believed to be female.
