Directions:
From Houston tahe I-10 East to State Highway 61. Proceed south to the intersection of SH 61, SH 65, and Farm/Ranch Route 562. Continue south on 562 for ~20 miles to the Texas Parks and Wildlife-administered Candy Abshier Wildlife Management Area and follow the signs to the parking area and tower.
Brief Description:
Counts conducted from a 30-foot tower on the shore of East Bay in the Candy Abshier Wildlfe Management Area at the southwestern tip of a sharply tapering peninsula that juts in to Galveston Bay. The terrain is predominantly coastal marsh, interspersed with weedy, fallow fields and oak mottes.
Additional Comments:
Limited, peak-season counts were conducted at this site for a number of years in the late 80s and 90s. Full-season counts began in 1997. Flights have varied from 25,000 up to 47,000 birds, with huge flocks of Broad-wings the predominant species.
