Machias Seal Island Trip with Barna and John Norton

Jonesport, Maine (207) 497-5933

Blind and Puffins

The highlight of any trip to the area is a boat trip out to Machias Seal Island to see the nesting Puffins and Razorbills. Unlike other trips where the boat just circles an island, you can land on Machias Seal Island (weather conditions and number of participants permitting) and view these birds from blinds. As Captain Barna Norton says, "This is the only place in the world where you can have Puffins on the roof of your blind, Puffins 8 feet from you, and a Puffin singing to it's young - right under the floor of the blind!"

The Norton's Boat, Chief Other species that frequent the island include Common Murre, Black Guillemot, and Artic Tern. Pelagic birds and sea mammals including seals, whales, and porpoises are also possible as you travel to and from the island.

Captains Barna and John Norton have the most experience in the area and have a boat with many extra safety features. The trip normally leaves at 7:00am from Jonesport. It takes around 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get to the island and you get around 3 hours on the island to observe the birds. The trip usually returns to Jonesport by 1-2pm.

Note: Weather conditions can cause the trip to be cancelled or can prevent landing on the island. The Canadian Wildlife Service strictly enforces the number of visitors to the island each day which may also prevent some people from landing on the island. In this case a trip around the island is still highly rewarding and preferred by some people in any case.
