Alert was recorded on Monday, March 24 at 10:20am. To report a bird

A THAYER'S GULL was seen in southeast Calgary on Sat Mar 22. The bird was
seen by Terry Korolyk at noon; a 1st year bird, it was at the Shepard
Landfill on 68 St SE south of 114 Ave southeast.
The first AMERICAN COOT of this year's season was seen on Fri Mar 21 at
Frank Lake on Hwy 23 6 kms east of High River. It was seen by Lois and Bill
Lang. The Langs saw at least 5 NORTHERN SHOVELERS and 2 male and 2 female
HOODED MERGANSERS there. On Arrowwood Creek near Arrowwood, they saw a
GREAT BLUE HERON. David Brown reported a RED-TAILED HAWK was near Tara Lake
on 80 Ave NE in Calgary on Fri Mar 21; and on Sat Mar 22, Terry Korolyk
observed a KILLDEER at McElroy Slough on Inverlake Rd just north of
Chestermere Lake. Reports on Sun Mar 23 included 2 SONG SPARROWS seen by
Jerry Pilny and Alan Fishkin at Bow Valley PP east of Canmore, and, a VARIED
THRUSH heard by Andrew Slater on the Lookout Trail at Brown-Lowry PP on
Plummers Road northwest of Millarville.
A female NORTHERN PINTAIL that was predominantly albinistic was seen by
Terry K. near Irricana on Sun Mar 23. The bird was in with about 3000 other
Pintails and other ducks on a slough on Twp Rd 273 about a kilometre east of
Hwy 9. On Sat Mar 22, Terry K. observed 2 male EURASIAN WIGEONS below the
weir at Wyndham-Carseland PP. Dave Elphinstone reported a male EURASIAN
WIGEON at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary on Thu Mar 20, then on Fri Mar 21,
Lois and Bill Lang reported 3 of the birds at Frank Lake. Joan and Malcolm
Macdonald and Jerry Pilny reported on Mar 22, 2 male EURASIAN WIGEONS were
above the dam at Bassano.
Joan and Malcolm Macdonald and Jerry Pilny saw on Mar 22 a SNOWY OWL on Hwy
1 just west of Hwy 36 west of Brooks while on Thu Mar 20 Mary Houston and
another observer saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE near the Jumpingpound Demonstration
Forest Road area on Hwy 68 west of Calgary.
The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Thursday, March 27.
BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the first Wednesday of the month, September - May
at 7:30pm, Room 211, Biosciences Bldg, University of Calgary. The next
meeting will be on Wed. April 2. Doors open at 7:00pm.

Sat Mar 29, 9:30am: BIRDING FOR BEGINNERS. With no leaves & birds in flocks,
this is a good time to begin. Meet Carburn Park. S from Glenmore Tr at 18 St
SE to second stoplight, then right & follow signs. Dress warmly. Leader,

Sun Mar 30, 8am: See swans, ducks in SE Sloughs, possibly Carseland. Meet
Anderson LRT, (Macleod Tr) S of pedestrian overpass. Leader, Eric Tull,

Sun Mar 30, 8:30am: Birding Votier's Flats, FCCP at S end of Elbow Dr SW.

Tue Apr 1, 8:30am: Monthly Elbow River Birding Survey. Meet Stanley Park, 42
Av SW, just W of Macleod Tr. Walk to Glenmore Reservoir, ride back (3.5
hours). Call leaders, Aileen Pelzer/Gus Yaki, 243-2248, to ensure vehicle
space for return.
Thu Apr 3, 9am: Birding Weaselhead Natural Area. Meet parking lot, 37 St &
66 Av SW. Leader, Bruce Barnetson, 246-1329.
Fri Apr 4, 7:30pm: 2008 is the Year of the Frog. Over 60% have gone into
steep decline or extinction the last 30 years. To hear Wood Frogs singing,
meet Weaselhead parking lot, 37 St & 66 Av. SW, Leader, John McFaul,

Sat Apr 5, 7:30am: Birding Frank Lake for swans, ducks, early migrants. Meet
Anderson LRT (Macleod Tr), S of pedestrian overpass, for carpooling. Bring

Sat Apr 5, 9am: Trumpeter Swans Outing, also daily during their migration.
In addition, if able to make a full day, extend travel eastward to study &
compare behaviour of Tundra Swans. Meet Petro-Canada Service Stn, Hwys 1 &

Sat Apr 5, 9am: Birding Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, E. end of 9 Av SE. Leader,

Sat Apr 12, 8:30am: Bird Griffith Woods Park, 2.5km W on Hwy 8 from Sarcee
Tr SW, then left at 69 St SW into Discovery Ridge. Continue straight at
traffic circle, then first left on Discovery Link into parking lot. Leader,

Sun Apr 13, 8:30am: Birding Sibbald Creek Trail. Meet Assumption School,
34th Av NW (just N of TCH #1, at Sarcee Trail). Bring lunch, full tank of

information, courses and field trips relating to natural history. For
