May 1 Gus Yaki et al saw 28 species on the Elbow River downstream of the
Glenmore Dam including 1 WARBLING VIREO, 3 OSPREY and 2 TOWNSEND'S
SOLITAIRES.
May 1 John McFaul saw 2 TREE SWALLOWS and 1 RED-NECKED GREBE at Bowmont
Park near the Osprey pole. The pair of OSPREY have returned to the pole.
April 30 Gus Yaki et al saw a CASSIN'S VIREO at Bebo Grove in Fish Creek
Provincial Park.
April 30 Milt Spitzer reported seeing a NASHVILLE WARBLER and 4 TURKEY
VULTURES at Strathcona Park in Medicine Hat.
April 30 Simone Marler saw many YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS in marshes near
Cayley. She also saw 4 BLACK-NECKED STILTS and 4 WESTERN GREBES at
MacGregor Lake.
April 30 Lloyd Bennett saw a WHIMBREL on his farm near Taber as well as
a CASPIAN TERN at Fincastle Lake.
April 29 Dwight Knapik recorded many RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS at Kitsim
Reservoir and an EURASIAN WIGEON at Lake MacGregor. He also watched an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS on the Cottonwood
Trail in Dinosaur PP.
April 29 Simone Marler saw 7 COMMON LOONS on the Bow River near the west
end of Prince's Island.
April 29 Dave Elphinstone saw a pair of CANADA GEESE with goslings at
Carburn Park.
April 29 Gus Yaki and Friends of Fish Creek Park saw 40 SWANS (mostly
TUNDRA SWANS), 6 SWAINSON'S HAWKS, 10 AMERICAN AVOCETS and 9 DOWITCHERS
(probably LONG-BILLED) in the SE Calgary Sloughs.
April 27 Inge Owens reported seeing 2 WHOOPING CRANES flying very low
about 1/2 mile north of Carstairs.
The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Monday, May 5.
BIRD STUDY GROUP - Meets the first Wednesday of the month, September -
May at 7:30pm, Room 211, Biosciences Bldg, University of Calgary. The
next meeting will be on Wed. May 7. Doors open at 7:00pm.

Sat May 10, 10 am: Birding Griffith Woods Park. 2.5 km W on Hwy 8 from
Sarcee Tr SW, then left at 69 St SW into Discovery Ridge, Continue
straight at traffic circle, then left on Discovery Link into parking
lot. Leader, Grant Brydle, 720-4957
Sat May 10, 7 am: See hundreds of Whimbrels (over 400 seen last year) &
other shorebirds migrating through the Taber area. In Calgary, meet
Anderson LRT (Macleod Tr) S of pedestrian overpass for car pooling.
Call 243-2248 to register and for more info. Four motels in Taber if
wanting to stay overnight. Leader, Lloyd Bennett, Taber, 403-223-0456
(or e-mail lloydaben@hotmail.com). Directions to leader's place: From
Taber, go 4 miles E on Hwy 3. Turn north at the big green Agricore
building for 3.5 miles (go exactly 1/2 mile past the second
intersection). Lloyd's house is on the E side, over 200 m from the
road. There is a round slough on the west side of the road and a blue
sign with the address - 104043 RgeRd 160. Meet at his place at 10 am.

Sun May 18, 9 am: Grassland birding, Kininvie Marsh & surrounding area.
Meet Tillebrook PP entrance (east of Brooks). Full day but may leave
any time. Please notify leader, Eric Tull, 295-0830 (Calgary) or Cell
922-3227, in advance to arrange possible car pooling & to not leave
without you. (Leave message on both phones to ensure it gets through).

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a City of Calgary Natural Area. Staff offer
information, courses and field trips relating to natural history. For

Sanctuary.
