Welcome to the City of Calgary and Nature Calgary's Bird Alert.  This
Bird Alert was recorded on Thursday, May 8, at 10:15am. To report a bird

please call Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation at 239-2488 or the Alberta
Institute for Wildlife Conservation at 946-2361.

A BRAMBLING has been seen and photographed in a yard in Drumheller.  The 
bird was reported by the homeowner, Lena Braman, who lives at 409 - 14 
St E.  Lena said the bird has been appearing in her yard for approx a 
week now.  It has been coming and going with WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. 
Lena recommends accessing her back yard via the back alley.  There are 
less than a handful of records of this species in the Alberta.

The adult male SMEW is still being seen west of Mountain View, just east 
of Waterton Lakes NP.  All recent sightings including the evening of 
Wednesday, May 7, have been at a slough on RgeRd 280 approx 1 km north 
of Hwy 5.  The slough is on the east side of the road.  The bird is a 
returning bird from 2007 and is Alberta's only record of the species.

Spring birds continue to arrive in our birding area.  Reports this week 
include BARN SWALLOW, NORTHERN ROUGH=WINGED SWALLOW, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, 
WILSON'S PHALAROPE, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER and PECTORAL 
SANDPIPER.  Lloyd Bennett reported an UPLAND SANDPIPER, a few 
SANDERLINGS and flock of 75 and 15 WHIMBRELS near Taber on Wednesday, 
May 7.  Terry Korolyk observed a flock of 10 male COMMON GRACKLES on 
RgeRd 284 southeast of Shepard on Tuesday, May 6.

Gull reports from the Browning-Ferris Landfill on 194 Ave SE this week 
included on May 5 a 1st-year THAYER'S GULL and the ICELAND-THAYER'S 
1st-year intergrade from April 26; 2 more 1st-year THAYER'S GULLS on 
Tuesday, May 6; and a dark phase 1st-year THAYER'S GULL on Wednesday, 
May 7.  All birds were seen by Terry Korolyk.

John Mewman reported a male EURASIAN WIGEON at Lac des Arcs off Hwy 1 at 
Exshaw on Wednesday, May 7, while Karen Reinhardt reported a pair of 
PILEATED WOODPECKERS were in her yard at her farm 4 miles north of 
Carstairs also on Wednesday, May 7.

The next scheduled update of the bird alert is on Monday, May 12.

NATURE CALGARY (CFNS) FIELD TRIPS

Sat May 10, 10 am: Birding Griffith Woods Park.  2.5 km W on Hwy 8 from
Sarcee Tr SW, then left at 69 St SW into Discovery Ridge, Continue
straight at traffic circle, then left on Discovery Link into parking

Sat May 10, 7 am:  See hundreds of Whimbrels (over 400 seen last year) &
other shorebirds migrating through the Taber area.  In Calgary, meet
Anderson LRT (Macleod Tr) S of pedestrian overpass for car pooling.
Call 243-2248 to register and for more info.  Four motels in Taber if
wanting to stay overnight.  Leader, Lloyd Bennett, Taber, 403-223-0456
(or  e-mail  lloydaben@hotmail.com).  Directions to leader's place: From
Taber, go 4 miles E on Hwy 3.  Turn north at the big green Agricore
building for 3.5 miles (go exactly 1/2 mile past the second
intersection).  Lloyd's house is on the E side, over 200 m from the
road.  There is a round slough on the west side of the road and a blue
sign with the address - 104043 RgeRd 160.  Meet at his place at 10 am.

Sun May 11, 8:30 am:  Birding Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.  E end of 9

Tue May 13, 6:30 pm:  Biding Carburn Park.  S from Glenmore Tr at 18 St
SE to second stoplight, then right & follow signs.  Meet parking lot.

Sat May 17, 9 am:  Bird Bowmont Park.  Meet Marantha Church, 2111 52 St

Sat May 17:  Participate in the Brooks May Species Count, May 17, and/or
on Eric Tull's May 18 Grassland trip, and/or his May 19 Badland trip, or
any combination (see below).  Make it a day or weekend trip.  Camping
available at Tillebrook Provincial Park (403 362-4525), motels in Brooks.

Sun May 18, 9 am:  Grassland birding, Kininvie Marsh & surrounding area.
  Meet Tillebrook PP entrance (east of Brooks). Full day but may leave
any time.  Please notify leader, Eric Tull, 295-0830 (Calgary) or Cell
922-3227, in advance to arrange possible car pooling & to not leave
without you.  (Leave message on both phones to ensure it gets through).

Mon May 19 (Victoria Day).  Badland birding, Dinosaur PP.  Meet
Tillebrook PP entrance at 8 am or at overlook parking at Dinosaur PP
entrance at 9 am.  Leave for Calgary mid afternoon.  Please notify

arrange possible car pooling & to not leave without you.  (Leave message on

Mon May 19, 7 am: Victoria Day.  See 100+ species of birds within
Calgary.  Meet Inglewood Bird Sanctuary.  E end of 9th Av SE.  Leader

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a City of Calgary Natural Area.  Staff offer
information, courses and field trips relating to natural history.  For
information, call 311 during office hours and ask for the Inglewood Bird
Sanctuary.
