Welcome to the Birding Hotline for interior Alaska as of May 14. 

Spring is here and the birds are singing everywhere.

On the 13th, Pair of CINNAMON TEAL (male and female) seen on roadside
 ponds at milepost 1330 on the Alaska Highway near Tok

Lakeview Terrace still has up to 3 or 4 GLAUCOUS GULLS and 1 or 2 
GLAUCOUS-WINGED  GULLS. 

The Airport Float ponds have a number of shorebirds including: BAIRD'S 
SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 
LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.   On the 12th a male BLUE-WINGED TEAL
 was reported at the float pond. 

South Cushman has had up to 3 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, but otherwise 
fairly low numbers of waterfowl and only a few LESSER YELLOWLEGS. 

On the 12th there were TREE SWALLOWS, CLIFF SWALLOWS and BANK
SWALLOWS at the Federal Building on 12th Ave.

HAMMOND'S FLYCATCHERS are here in big numbers all around town.

The first TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS were reported on the 14th at the UAF
West Ridge trails.

A very vocal pair of MERLINS has been reported in the neighborhood off of
 Trainer Gate Rd.

NORTHERN HAWK-OWLS continue to be seen off of the eastern end of 
Steele Creek Rd.

WILLOW PTARMIGAN are putting on quite the show at Denali National
 Park.  The park road is open to Mile 30.


UPCOMING EVENTS
Spring Field trips: Local birding experts will lead a series of three 
birding 
field trips. All trips meet at 9:00 am at the Creamer's Field Farmhouse 
and usually last until Noon. Bring binoculars, a snack, and rubber boots
 if you have them. 

May 16th - Shorebird Identification 
May 23rd - Birding by Ear and Songbird Identification
 
2009 Bird-a-thon
ABO and Arctic Audubon host a friendly competitive fundraiser each year
 during the spring migration season. This is a fun way to raise money for 
both organizations, learn what birds come to Alaska to breed, and to get 
out
 and enjoy spring. Get friends and family to pledge money toward your 
birding efforts. Pick one 24 hour period between May 9 and June 14 to 
bird.
 Go on your own search for birds or join one of several guided trips. More

Collect pledges from as many sponsors as possible: family, friends, 
colleagues, businesses, etc. Don't be shy. You'll be surprised how many
 people will contribute! Download a Pledge Tracking form from the ABO

Saturday, May 16,  8am - 3 or 4 pm ADULT GUIDED BIRDATHON 
Meet at the Farmhouse at Creamer's Refuge Join Sue Guers, manager of 
ABO's Bird Banding Station for an all day birding trip around Fairbanks. 
Bring a sack lunch, water, appropriate clothes and footwear. 
Transportation
 will be car-pooling. $60 donation
 
Tuesday May 21, 7 pm  EVENING GUIDED BIRDATHON   Join Sherry
 Lewis of Arctic Audubon for an evening walk around Creamer's Refuge.
Meet at the Farmhouse at Creamer's Refuge  $10 donation
 
Thursday May 28,  7pm   EVENING GUIDED BIRDATHON  Join Gail 
Mayo of Arctic Audubon for a morning walk around Smith Lake and the 
University Ski Trails. Meet at the Ski Hut on upper campus, next to the 
Geophysical Institute. $10 donation

where the bird was seen along with your name and phone number.
