Welcome to the Birding Hotline for Interior Alaska as of March 18, 2010.
A sure sign of spring, reports of calling territorial male BOREAL OWLS
are coming in from all over town.
A group of 14 BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES were spotted off of Air Park
Road (near the Steese Highway and Farmer's Loop Road) on March 15.
Two BALD EAGLES were seen hunting ducks on the Chena River behind
Pioneer Park on March 14.
On March 4, a pair of GREAT-HORNED OWLS were performing a duet
courtship call about 200m uphill from intersection of Steele Creek Rd.
and Trianon Dr.
Upcoming events include:
A Spring Equinox Walk will be held on Saturday March 20th from 1:00
- 3:00pm at Creamer's Refuge.
A Star Party will be held at Creamer's refuge on Saturday, March 21
at 8:30. Meet at the farmhouse. Hot drinks will be available.
An Owl Program will be held on April 1st at 7:00 at the Taiga Center
at Wedgewood Resort. Enjoy a talk and slide show about the ecology
of our local owls, how to find them and identify their calls, and meet
a live owl!
A Preschool Discovery program will be held on Thursday, April 8 from
1:00 - 2:30. The topic is geese. There is a fee of $3 per child and
pre-registration is required. Call 452-5162.
The Spring Migration Celebration will take place at Creamer's Refuge
on Saturday, May 1 from noon - 4:00 PM. There will be bird and wildlife
viewing, informational booths, nature walks, and crafts. Activities will
also
take place at the Morris Thompson Cultural Center. Call 452-5162 for
more information.
A Frog Walk will take place at Creamer's refuge on Sunday, May 9 from
1:00 - 3:00. Come dressed for the weather including mud boots.
