This is the Upper Cook Inlet (UCI) bird report updated on Saturday,
November 2nd, sponsored by the Anchorage Audubon Society. To skip the
report and leave a message press the # key now.
Highlighting the observations reported in the UCI since late October was
a Great Blue Heron seen on October 31st and again November 2nd at
Campbell Lake in south Anchorage. This wader is a very rare visitor to
the UCI area, but generally more frequent in the fall. Up to 40+
Trumpeter Swans and several Tundra Swans, an impressive number this time
of year at Anchorage, have lingered the past week at the south end of
Potter Marsh; with at least 29 Trumpeters and 3 Tundras still present on
the 2nd. And our harbingers of the coming winter, Bohemian Waxwings,
have returned to the area to feast on local mountain ash berries and
other ornamental fruits; with first reports of small flocks near
downtown Anchorage on the 23rd and at Hatcher Pass on the 25th.
Other noteworthy bird sightings in the UCI reported since late October
included 25 Rock and 7 White-tailed Ptarmigan at Hatcher Pass on the
25th; a Rusty Blackbird mixed with American Robins in south Anchorage on
the 26th; a Common Snipe in the Bear Valley area of south Anchorage on
the 27th; a Northern Flicker along the Coastal Trail near Elderberry
Park on the 30th; 3 Trumpeter Swans, 2 American Wigeon, 12 Ring-necked
Ducks, one Redhead and 2 Bufflehead counted on Elmendorf Air Force Base
area lakes on the 1st; and single female Gadwall, Northern Pintail and
American Widgeon feeding around the swans at Potter Marsh on the 2nd.
You may now leave your report after the tone; please include the date
and place of observation, as well as your name and telephone number.
Reports of any loons, grebes, shorebirds, thrushes and/or warblers would
be of appreciated.
