Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, February 24, 2008.
The last report of the Guntersville WESTERN GREBE was from 2/2. As before the
location was in Browns Creek south of AL 69. On 2/23 two male WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS were cruising in this area among the many loons parallel to the
causeway. The RED-THROATED and two PACIFIC LOONS were seen again 2/23 also at
this location. The 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL was seen again in the southern end
of the creek 2/15 but I’ve received no recent reports. At times the
Glaucous was seen lounging with other gulls on private docks along the
embayment’s western shore. The adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL continues to be
regular on or near the pilings at the south end of the US 431 bridge just north
of town. [DeAL 26-A1][BGtA p. 259][NABT #35]
An EARED GREBE was discovered 2/23 with Horned Grebes off The Point at the mouth
of Town Creek in Colbert County. [DeAL 17-C9][BGtA p. 209][NABT #4]
The sixth NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL (!) for this winter season was banded 2/16 in a
private
yard in Clay northeast of Birmingham.
The last Magnolia Springs’ GROOVE-BILLED ANI report was from 2/2. From the
Baldwin County 49/12 intersection go about 1.0 mile north and turn left (west)
onto gravel Bay Road. The bird was about 0.25 miles down the road near the
culvert and slow stream. Look north of the road and about 200 yards west
(count off about four power poles) of the stream. Early morning and late
afternoon may be best. [DeAL 63-H7]
The female ANNA’S HUMMINGBIRD banded 1/18 in Fairhope at the Gibson residence,
was seen again 2/2. I’ve received no recent reports so the current status
of this rarity is unknown. Birders have permission to come try for this beauty
– you do not need to call ahead of time. From the US 98-Scenic 98 split
north of town, follow main US 98 south for about 2.0 miles and turn left (east)
at Nichols Avenue. In a short distance turn right onto Boothe Road and then
right at Manor Blvd (third street). The address is 209 Manor Blvd. Take care
to not block the driveway. Walk down the driveway along the right side of the
house and enter the backyard through the wooden gate (make sure and close
behind you!). There are two feeders at the back of the house and two near a
rose bush – the bird uses all of them. It is not marked. [DeAL 63-F6]
