Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, March 16, 2008.
An area shorebird count 3/14 tallied 22 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at Gnat Pond sod
farm in Colbert County. The location is just north of the RR track between
Gnat Pond Road and Marthaler Lane. [DeAL 17-D8][BGtA p. 211]
The Guntersville WESTERN GREBE was seen again 3/8 at its usual location in
Browns Creek south of AL 69. A molting EARED GREBE was also found that day
just offshore from Sunset Drive near the restroom building south of the AL 69
intersection. On 2/29 three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS (1 imm. male and 2 females)
were found south of AL 227 in the Spring Creek embayment. The adult LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL continued 3/8 on the pilings at the south end of the US 431
bridge just north of town. [DeAL 26-A1][BGtA p. 259][NABT #35]
The ninth NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL (!!!!) for this winter season was banded 3/12 in
a
private yard in Clay northeast of Birmingham.
Several RED CROSSBILLS were seen again 2/23 at Talladega NF northeast of
Anniston where the species has been a regular treat for several years now. To
reach the site take the Heflin exit (AL 9) from I-20 and travel north 1.5 miles
to US 78. Turn right and follow US 78 east for 8.5 miles to Co. 61. Turn left
and follow Co. 61 for 7.5 miles to FS500 (the road becomes FS553 at the forest
boundary). Turn right and follow FS500 and signs for Lake Coleman to a fenced
parking area on the right in 1.5 miles. Search the surrounding area and the
nearby Pinhoti Trail. [DeAL 33-A8][BGtA p. 184]
The Magnolia Springs’ GROOVE-BILLED ANI was seen again 3/11 & 12. From the
Baldwin County 49/12 intersection go about 1.0 mile north and turn left (west)
onto gravel Bay Road. The bird was about 0.25 miles down the road near the
culvert and slow stream. Look north of the road and west of the stream near a
small hill. Early morning and late afternoon may be best. [DeAL 63-H7]
