Alabama Rare Bird Report – Tuesday, May 20, 2008.
Several WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were seen 5/12 at Blakeley Island ponds 5S and 1
in Mobile. This location is best reached from US 90 at the last entrance on
the right before starting to drive up the Cochrane Bridge. REMEMBER: this is
an access-restricted area and a signed, annual hold harmless permit is required
to be in the possession of State Docks security personnel prior to making your
visit. For full details and copies of the required permit visit the AOS web
site at: http://www.bham.net/aos/blakeley/. [DeAL 62-C4][BGtA p. 41]
Migration on the coast last weekend on Dauphin Island was still quite active
through 5/17 with 11 warbler species noted at the Shell Mounds along with at
least three BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS. A return visit 5/18 found that most migrants
had departed. An adult SOOTY TERN was seen in late April on Pelican Island
which lies just south of Dauphin Island. [DeAL 64-B3&4][BGtA p. 6-12][ACBT
#44]
A visit to The Sinks in Colbert County on 5/11 produced several WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS. The Sinks is located at the intersection of Co. 69 (Fennell Rd)
and Co. 24 (6th St.) northeast of Leighton. [DeAL 17-D9][BGtA p. 210]
