Alabama Rare Bird Report – Saturday, August 2, 2008.

A survey of northwest Alabama birding spots 8/1 found most of the favorite
shorebirds locations in poor (dry) condition with few birds.  An exception was
Church Pond located west of Florence where nine species were found including an
early BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER.  From AL 20 follow County 2 (Gunwaleford Road)
west for about 3.0 miles to County 204 and a sign for a church.   Turn left
and in a short distance the pond will appear on the right across from the
church.  [DeAL 17-C6]

Three ANHINGA were seen 7/31at Saginaw swamp in Shelby County just east of
I-65.  From Birmingham, follow I-65 south to the Shelby County airport exit
(#234).  Turn left (east) onto County 87 and follow this road as it turns back
north.  Check the dead trees in the swamp and the skies for perched or soaring
bird
s.  [DeAL 37-A8]

Farther afield, an adult JABIRU was discovered 7/31 at Sherburne WMA located
about 20 miles west of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  This super-rare tropical stork
was seen in the company of other waders but flew soon after being found.  It
has yet to be relocated.  For directions and latest information check the LA
listserve at:  http://www.birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/LOUI.html

Photos may be enjoyed at:

Interestingly another Jabiru was found in Mississippi during August 2007.  Same
 bird?
