Alabama Rare Bird Report – Sunday, May 17, 2009.
Up to five BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS continued through 5/12 at Blakeley
Island in Mobile. Recently the ducks seem to have preferred ponds 2 and 4
although they have been seen flying and calling over other parts of the mudlakes
property. On 5/9-10 a WHITE-FACED IBIS was seen with other dark ibis
including at least one GLOSSY IBIS. The White-faced was not seen on 5/12
although it could have been one of the three unidentified dark ibis in the
area. The ibis seem to currently prefer the cattail marsh areas at the south
end of pond 3 and the north end of pond 4. Both WHITE-RUMPED and BAIRD’S
SANDPIPERS have also been seen at this location during the last week.
REMEMBER: this is an access-restricted area and an annual, signed hold
harmless permit is required to be in the possession of State Docks security
personnel prior to making your visit. A pre-visit notification phone call to
security personnel is=2
0also required. These rules have been established in order to maintain access
to this productive birding area and must be followed to the letter. For full
details, a map of the area, and copies of the required permit visit the AOS web
site at: http://www.aosbirds.org/blakeley.php

An immature GLAUCOUS GULL was found 5/11 near Dauphin Island (exact location not
reported) [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 6-12]. On 5/17 another immature Glaucous (or
same bird?) was seen flying around the ferry landing across the bay at Ft.
Morgan. [DeAL 64-B4][BGtA p. 23][ACBT #15]
A shorebird survey 5/16 discovered 132 (!) BAIRD’S and a few WHITE-RUMPED
SANDPIPERS at Church Pond southwest of Florence. A return visit 5/17 did not
relocate these migrants. [DeAL 17-C6] A lone WHITE-RUMPED was found with
other peeps in a flooded field corner south of the Marthaler Lane RR track.
[DeAL 17-D8][BGtA p. 211] A web map of these and other nearby birding
locations in Colbert/Lauderdale Counties may be found at:

A MOURNING WARBLER was heard briefly 5/16 along Indian Creek Greenway in Madison
County east of Madison. From I-565 follow exit #13 to Madison Boulevard (Alt
72). Go 1.0 mile west and turn right (north) at Slaughter Road. In 1.0 mile
turn right again onto Old Madison Pike and park in the lot on the left in a
short dist
ance just before the creek bridge. The warbler was heard about 0.5 mile north
of the parking lot on the right (east) side of the trail across the creek from a
low hillside. There is a slanted concrete (2-pipe) culvert near the spot. A
visit 5/17 did not relocate this bird. [DeAL 19-D7]
