Alabama Rare Bird Report – Monday, May 25, 2009.

An immature FORK-TAILED FLYCATCHER (Alabama’s 4th, p.a.) was an astounding
discovery on the afternoon of 5/21 at Blakeley Island in Mobile.  The bird was
enjoyed by several observers from around 4:00 – 6:30 pm.  A nice set of
photos is at:  http://www.pbase.com/swmavocet/forktail

Attempts to relocate the bird on 5/22 failed and there have been no subsequent
reports of this beautiful rarity.

During this time period, three BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS continued to be
seen on one of the islands in pond 4 and also in the reedy north end of the same
pond.  Several plegadis ibis have been seen in the area with GLOSSY continuing
for sure.  A consistent spot to see them seems to be the south end of pond 3
in a cattail marshy area.   Both WHITE-RUMPED and BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS have
also been seen in recent days with other shorebirds.  On 5/22 the main
concentration was the south end of pond 5S.  =C
2REMEMBER:  this is an access-restricted area and an annual, signed hold
harmless permit is required to be in the possession of State Docks security
personnel prior to making your visit.  A pre-visit notification phone call to
security personnel is also required.  These rules have been established in
order to maintain access to this productive birding area and must be followed to
the letter.  For full details, a map of the area, and copies of the required
permit visit the AOS web site at:  http://www.aosbirds.org/blakeley.php

[DeAL 62-C4][BGtA p. 41][ACBT #32]

Just south of Blakeley, eight BLACK-BELLIED WHISTLING-DUCKS were seen 5/21
eating rye grass adjacent to the AL 90/98 causeway just east of the Tensaw River
bridge.  Just after crossing the bridge the causeway has a widened shoulder
many people park on for fishing.  The ducks were here just before the frontage
road intersection to some abandoned gas stations and convenience stores.  A
return visit 5/22 did not relocate these ducks.  [DeAL 62-D4]

A BLACK SCOTER was reported last week in the surf near Pelican Peninsula (out
from pier) on Dauphin Island.  [DeAL 64-B3][BGtA p. 6-12]

At least one WARBLING VIREO was found again 5/18 in an oak tree near centerfield
at the ballfield.  Nesting is suspected.  [DeAL 16-B3][BGtA p. 226][NABT #11]

Six WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were found in a field pond 5/25 about 1.0 mile east
of the ballfields at Calhoun College north of Decatur.  Fol
low Airport Road east from US 31 and look on the left (north) side of the
road.  [DeAL 18-E4][BGtA p. 246]
